2013-2014 Oakland University Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Thank you for informing us about Oakland!

I am flying into DTW two days before my interview but will be landing late, so I will have one full day to explore the area before the interview. Do you have any suggestions on what I should do and where I should go? Thank you!

Go check out the downtown Royal Oak area - good places to eat and drink. Not too much sightseeing to do in the Detroit area, especially where Oakland is because its all suburbs.

I lived in Michigan for 10 years, there is not much to do outside of Ann Arbor and a few select places.

Got an interview invite, first one of the season 🙂. Anyone have suggestions on how to prepare?

Hmm.. clearly you haven't gotten out and experienced Pure Michigan

Traverse city, mackinac island, pictured rocks, upper penninsula are all great. Michigan is beautiful in the northern areas. I've lived in mi for 16 years. Love to come back and visit and sightsee.

Rejected 🙁 But they are really nice about helping you figure out what went wrong. I scheduled an advising appointment with them to figure it out!

Was it via email? I am sorry that happened to you.

Thanks. rejection sucks .____.

I emailed the office and they told me to call them at 248-370-2769 to set up a phone appointment. Just tell them you would like to talk to an advisor about your application. Its super easy!

Interview invite came yesterday via email/status change. IS, 3.8/37. 10 minutes from my parents' house and my mom's alma mater. Fingers crossed for a great interview here! 😍:luck:

Congrats!!! When were you complete??

So in the Semester/Quarter spot, all I put in was Semester. I thought they were making sure it wasn't a Quarter class, but now I'm thinking I should have put in like Fall 2012. Oops?

I did the same thing and got an interview, so I don't think it matters.

Just got my reject email

Good luck to rest of you guys!

Interview invitation! This part of Michigan looks gorgeous. Good luck everyone! 🙂

Did your status change ever between all green checkmarks and the II?

I'm not 100% sure, but I think it went from green checks all the way with the Interview section blank to, all of a sudden, having the notes section of the Interview row saying "Not scheduled yet" and having an Interview tab appear.

You're notified by email of the interview. The last unsolicited email I received prior to the interview invitation was my email titled, "OUWB School of Medicine: Supplemental Confirmation". Hope that helps!

Hey,
I am interviewing on Sept 6, flying into DTW the night before.
I was planning on renting a car to get to OUWB from the airport. Is there anyone who would want to split the cost and carpool with me?

Hmm I don't even have an interview section that's blank. I only have four rows on the status page, with the bottom one being "Application File Complete" with a green check next to it.

For those who received rejection notices, was this post secondary/supplemental or are the rejections for those who were never asked to submit secondaries?

rejected this morning, 38/3.6/oos/after secondary

i suspect it was due to a bum secondary essay, I'm thinking i might call and ask. did others say they had success in getting feedback post-rejection?

Rejected today, complete since 7/15. 3.72 30 IS, plan to seek feedback.

Got rejected this morning. 28/3.5 in-state after I submitted my secondary. Now I'm really counting on CMU and WMU.

Wow, complete ~7/17 I think and have heard nothing. No news is good news...unless a rejection is coming my way eventually. :S

Rejected today. 3.72 30, IS, Masters degree. Definitely not my first choice for school, but still disappointing.

I've been complete since 7/5 and I haven't heard anything either. OOS

Rejected post secondary. OOS, 3.8/28. No worries though, I've got plenty of schools still in play!

Yikes, talk about mass rejection this morning. I'm still in the game but I wasn't complete till 7/31 so I don't think they've made it to me yet.

Oakland says on their website that they don't give preference to in state applicants....but if you look at the profiles for the class of 2015 and class of 2016, 70% were from Michigan ('15) and 53% were from Michigan ('16). So....is it safe to assume in-state applicants are given a preference?

It is not impossible to think that the high IS representation is due to at least one of these reasons:
1) IS students are more likely to matriculate to Oakland U
2) IS students are more likely to apply to Oakland U

These two observations could, if true, at least partly explain 70% of the students being from Michigan even though Oakland has no preference for IS students.

Or they do have a secret preference.

Based on the MSAR, for the last app cycle they got approximately a 1:2 IS-OOS ratio of applicants. However they extended about the same number of interviews to both OOS and IS (maybe ~10% difference).

Got an interview invite today! 😀

cGPA: 3.94
sGPA: 3.97
MCAT: 29
In-State

This is why I should have gone to an easier and less competitive school for undergrad. How does someone who almost has a 4.0, only get a 29 on the MCAT. I'm not attacking the student, just the system. It seems kind of unfair. I'm just gonna go cry in the corner with my sub par gpa. 🙁

Thanks for the info. They definitely have an in-state preference.
