2013-2014 Oakland University Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
hey guys so I was put on hold a while ago and so I decided to send in a letter of intent. I addressed it to the lady whom notified me of my hold (Grabowski if I recall) and I sent via the document status section they have on the application itself. I just don't know if they even bothered to read it because I can't tell (like there is no response or any change to indicate they read it) I tried to find her email to send it her specifically but can't find that info anywhere. Anyone try this for Oakland? Or perhaps a different school? If so what was your experience with it?

How do you know you got put on hold? Did you get a call?

This is probably quite early, but does anyone know when financial aid letters will be released, and if OUWB gives out a decent number of scholarships (since it's a private school)? A friend of mine is going to be working in the Troy area and we'd be interested in rooming together. I loved OUWB but it's almost $20k/year more expensive than a couple other options. He starts work in May so the earlier I know the earlier it would be possible for us to work out a housing situation.

---

EDIT - I checked their Financial Aid website. Looks like it comes out around late March-early April. A bit of a bummer but I guess that's standard.

Just withdrew my interview invitation, good luck to everyone!

So for those that interviewed here on Dec 17... Jan 18 is approaching!!!:heckyeah: They said they would call the 18th or the 25th. This anxiety is making a WHALE out of me. :grumpy:This is my top choice so I am beyond nervous. Good luck to everyone!!! :nailbiting:

Hmm, I thought they only met 1st, 3rd, and 5th Wednesdays of the month. Did that change?

I do not know. But I always write lots of notes on all my interviews, in case I have to choose between them later on, and my notes days the 18th or the 29th actually. So I could have written wrong, and it is the 15th and the 29th, because those would be 3rd and 5th wednesday. 🙂

PS: Thanks for letting me know, they didn't explicitly said that during my interview day.

Bet you that 8 was a scribbled 5 😉

Hey guys, I'll be taking my MCAT april 24th, and this is my number one choice. For those that have been accepted or interviewed, is there anything you noticed they liked about applicants whether it be on the application, stats (MCAT, gpa), or interview?

Good luck to all waiting on an acceptance!

Every school wants an applicant with great grades and clinical experience. The question is what diversity do you offer to the new class? They don't want a homogenous group of students. They want someone who is passionate and educated about medicine and healthcare with a personal journey leading to that conclusion.

Accepted! I will definitely be attending. Can't wait to start looking for an apartment.

Happy to. I think it's a testament to being an all around applicant.

3.7 sci and cum gpa
27 mcat

Sadly, I'm sure the mcat is why I didn't get much love from allopathic schools but it's their loss.

Everything happens for a reason. We will kick ass at OUWB!!! yay to us!!! :highfive:

Congratulations to Palam and plasticsEthusE! I have the same question as goodguygreg regarding post-interview LOI. I interviewed November 26th and haven't received good news or bad news. The admissions office told me that my file is still under review.

I am not sure about the LOI, but I do recall them saying they have a "deferred" system. Where they keep pushing your application to next meetings, until march. However, I do not remember if they reject people before March... they did mention it comes through snail mail.
Good luck you guys.... keep us updated!

But no matter what, know you are going to end up where you meant to be.... do you think I thought from one second I would end up somewhere in Michigan all the way from Florida, with no one I know there what so ever? But heyyy... Oakland here I come!!!:naughty:

Haha thanks for positive encouragement PlasticsEthusE. Guess I'm gonna have to write that fat deposit check for WesternU in the meantime as I wait to hear from OUWB. On the brightside, received a II from USUHS 🙂

O wow what is great news!!! See... who knows!!! Best of luck :luck:
We will all be class 2018 one way or another. :smug:

OUWB twitter "@OUWBAdmissions: All offers out for this week. Adcom completed reviews for interviews on 11/26. We have a few applicants left for 12/6 and many for 12/17"

Congrats!!! I would love to receive an offer from OUWB. I'm pretty sure I met you on interview day 12/17!!! I was the guy from Utah. Super excited that you got in! I still haven't heard anything, but it looks like they haven't reviewed all of the interviews from that day yet.... there is still hope yet!

haha I guess it was obvious due to the "Plastics" hehe. I actually looked to see if your picture was at the FB page!! I would not worry so much, the reason why I was probably looked at already is because I BELIEVE, I was in another pool of students... "the diversity pool" hehe.
But like twitter said... most of 12/17 have not been looked at! Fingers crossed!!:xf: Keep me posted.... hopefully you will get in and we can go on double dates (you know... boring married couple stuff)

I hope you got some other interviews since then! I believe the next meeting is on the 29th... so I will be here to hear to good news!! 😉

Good luck... this process is THE WORSE... I can breath for the first time in a VERY long time!!!

I interviewed the 17th with plastics and mr. Utah
Really? Did we meet? Yay I am so excited! U going to the second view? I think I will live on campus for the first semester at least. What about u?

Yep! I sat next to you I think. I was the guy from Long Island. Navy suit and burgundy tie.

I'll probably do the second view but when is it? Any word when our deposit is due? I read that it's not required until spring

I may live on campus just to get acclimated although it depends on how nice versus how expensive the housing is. I know one can get a great apartment for relatively cheap compared to what you and I are used to

Yeah I remember you 🙂 Its on the "accepted student" tab... I believe its April 3-5.
I plan on calling the office Tuesday to ask about the deposit. The rent around is def cheaper... but I have no one in Michigan and I will live on campus just in case something happens to me, I have a roommate hehe. I also want to rent a house when my husband moves and I want to get to know the areas first.
We will see... 🙂

Anyone here accepted after waiting moderate-long time after their interview?

Pre-interview rejection a few minutes ago via email after being on hold since September. Have an acceptance elsewhere, so not too bummed.

Good luck to everyone else! 🙂

Congrats to accepted peeps and best of luck to the rest of you 🙂 Look forward to meeting you on campus (or seeing you again, if you were in my tour groups)!

Just saw that some people were looking into living on campus - I would just say to look into off-campus options 'cause they tend to be cheaper (and nicer). Not that Michigan is all that pricey anyway, but that's my 2 cents! (I think there's a Facebook group for accepted students where this type of thing is discussed/you can start finding roommates and whatnot)

This may be a silly questions, but did Oakland specifically say "your on hold" or you just have not heard since Sept? I was complete around then too and have not heard a single word from anyone nor has the online portal thing changed at all since! Thanks!

I was complete in July, actually--September is when they sent me a "hold" email. I updated them about my post-graduation activities in October...guess I wasn't what they were looking for.

Hope that helps!

Along with having decent numbers and clinical work, I think that the fact that OUWB is your top choice will help you if you are invited to interview. Oakland was my top choice and I felt my interviewers really liked how genuinely enthused I was about the program and all of the amazing qualities the school has to offer. Be sure to do your research prior to interviewing! I was able to list off numerous activities I wanted to get involved with and what opportunities I was specifically drawn to. Let them know how OUWB is the perfect fit for you 🙂 Good luck with your MCAT studying as well!

This is great news! I was just watching the Webinar they held today and was jotting down notes like a mad man. I noticed that they emphasized their capstone project, and how they have an integrated curriculum. What type of activities are you talking about? Also, what type of research should I do on the school?

As for the MCAT, thanks a lot! Im probably going to need all the luck I can get, seeing as I hate physics with a passion. :bang:

Well my experience was different with OUWB. I went in literally knowing nothing about the school... I wasn't even quite sure why I had applied haha, but after my interview I knew that was the school I wanted to go to. Anyhow... I have one of those "talk is cheap" kind of attitude, therefore I would make sure they could see in my application why it is that I am a good fit.
They love community involvement, people with dimension, hobbies, that understands the path of medicine and can tell them why (not the cliche... because I want to help people... bla). So I would make sure that besides talking how much you love the school, you have a history to prove your passion. I believe actions do speak louder than words. That is my two cents.

Good luck... I hated the mcat SO much, I actually had a bonfire with the books after I got accepted!!!! 🤣**Burn baby burn!!!**:boom:
PS: For phy look at the youtube videos: hewitt drew it and brightstorm, it helped me a lot.

I actually laughed to this post haha you couldve just sold the books or something! But I definitely see where you're coming from, I have to actually GET the interview first before I can start planning on what to tell them during the interview. I'll try strengthening my application as much as possible to match their criteria. Thanks 🙂
