2013-2014 Rosalind Franklin University Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Any MD/PhD applicants in here? I finished everything up on 10/15 and haven't had any communication since. Any one else in the same boat?

I don't believe they accept MD/PhD applicants outright. I'm pretty sure you are accepted as an MD student, and then enter onto the MD/PhD track sometime in the first two years. You may want to contact an admissions counselor about that.

Anyone know if this school is receptive to "in the area" emails? I'll be interviewing at Loyola February 20th and would like to group the interviews together if possible. Also, do you guys think Feb. 20th is still too far off to send the request?

From what I remember, they don't accept any e-mails pre-interview. I e-mailed prior to my interview and received an e-mail that essentially said, "Sorry! We don't accept these!"

Whoops, too late! 🙄

I got a little impatient.

Wow, I didn't know that they were rejecting from the small pool yet. This doesnt bode well for me. I was small pooled around a similar time. Good luck on the rest of your cycle.

Don't make assumptions about your application. There's no way to predict what's going to happen. The fact that other people are rejected or not rejected has no bearing on your application.

Got a nice post-acceptance follow up email from one of my interviewers today, how sweet 🙂

Navy housing, which is right across the street and is open to civilians, is an even cheaper option. My roommate and I split a 3-bedroom apartment for $1300/month total ($650 each) plus utilities. The buildings are more spacious than those from either student housing or Woodlands. I live about 1/2 mile away from campus.

When should students start looking to signing the leases if they are interested in the Navy housing?

Are there other things do you wish you would have done differently?

Can you comment about using firecracker along with the coursework?

Thanks for your time and comments!

You should put in an application for navy housing three months before you plan to move in; your application expires three months after you submit it. When you apply, you can put another student's name in as a referral (Mine? ;-)) and they'll probably split the referral bonus with you.

I would have eaten more kale. Kale is good for you.

Can you comment about using firecracker along with the coursework?

I'm afraid I can't. I didn't use any review material during the first year, and as you may have inferred from my previous answer, that is exactly what I would have done had I gone through my first year again.

Thanks for your time and comments!

Feel free to ask more questions if you think of them. And if you can, try to quote my answers if anyone else asks the same ones!

Was put on hold. Sent in an update later. Then was accepted here about 1.5 weeks ago but now planning to withdraw! mcat 33 gpa 3.9

Do you have a link to the navy housing? I'm having trouble finding any info. Thanks!

Also, do you think it's necessary to have a car your first and second year?

Most people do have cars. It would be very difficult to get by without one in my opinion. There a lot of off campus extracurriculars and there's not really a grocery store within walking distance or very many public buses to my knowledge.

Car? Not necessary, but highly recommended. North Chicago is a food desert, which, sadly and ironically, is one of the reasons that we have so many patients to serve at the new free clinic we just opened. It is far easier to walk to the nearest McDonald's than to the nearest grocery store, which is 3-4 miles away.

Hi all,

I was small pooled today (literally a couple of minutes ago). While I was cautiously excited to hear the news, as this is one of my favorite schools, I am not quite sure how optimistic to be. I have had a rather rough cycle so far-- 6 reject, 1 interview (no response yet, been 3 weeks), still awaiting about 9.

If anyone knows- how likely is it to get an II after a small pool? Do a lot of people who get small pooled get rejected pre-interview, or are you all but assured an interview? I thought the former at first, but that's because I tend to be a glass half-empty type of person.

Thanks in advance!

When were you complete?

early october

I don't know if this news will make you feel any better or worse... but judging from earlier posts it seems that this small pool is not really so small. However, at least I guess you can satisfied knowing that only potential interview invitees (dunno if this is a word) are amongst this "small pool."

I agree. I just assume that sdn posters comprise a rather small percentage of the entire applicant pool, and this perhaps isn't a great representation of all applicants in general. who knows, i'm just grasping at straws at this point lol

Interview invite today!
Complete 8/22, Small pooled 11/6
Minnesota resident, 3.81/30
Most likely shooting for the January 8th or 10th interview day, since the other options they gave me were for next week already. If anyone has any insight into what the interview is like/travelling around North Chicago/hotels or accomodations I'd love to hear it. Excited to see what this school is all about!

Anyone interviewing next week on Wednesday, 12/11?

got the "small pool" email today. i was so excited to hear back from a school but wished it would've been better news! anyone know the chances of being offered an II after being small pooled?

I was offered an II after being small-pooled for a month. I think that your chances are good. Don't lose hope! :]

If this is a small pool, I got one today too:

"...At this time, your application remains under consideration with the Admissions Committee. This means you are in the pool of applicants who may be invited to interview with The Chicago Medical School. However, this does not guarantee an invitation and you may be invited to interview or declined an interview at anytime during the admissions process..."

I would also like to know what our chances of an ii are at this point. I'm not going to get too excited since I was pretty much expecting a silent rejection haha.

Congrats! When were you complete?

PS everyone asks the same question- at least once a page, and nobody has an answer. We've only seen 2-3 get rejected post-small pool though.

We're getting a student hosting program started extremely soon, so if you're interested in staying with a current student, pop over an email to [email protected] and we'll try to find you someone.

We're also starting up a mentoring program, so if you want to be set up with someone from CMS you can email with ANY questions you have about the school, feel free to email.

I would strongly suggest you read through the previous few pages in this thread. There's no real answer to this question.

Here's to hoping for a batch of IIs before Christmas! 🙂

I was complete early October.

Withdrew my acceptance here today after being accepted to my top choice. Good Luck everyone! Hope one of you will get my spot sooner than later!

That is the small pool. The basics are that the "small" pool, in reality is not small by any stretch of the imagination. However, if you're positive like me, you would see it as another hurdle you've surmounted. After all, they could've very well rejected you without you being placed in the small pool, right? Basically it's some sort of screen they have, and that's the actual group of applicants they review each month to choose those that will get an invite to interview. Good luck! And feel free to message me or Tantacles with any questions you have. We're both students here and will do our best to answer them or point you in the direction of someone who can!

Been finished for over a month now, no small pool

The "complete" email they should have sent you said (at least for me) the decision for your application will take 6-8 weeks.

Has anyone been rejected pre-interview? I received that complete email about 10 weeks ago but still haven't been small-pooled. People after me have been so anyone know?

Can anyone comment on the interview day or what sets RFU apart from all other schools/programs?

Yes, there were some people who got rejected pre-interview earlier in the cycle.

I would love to know how many small-pooled IS applicants there are. 1309 applicants and 305 interviewed IS... but how many small poolers...

They definitely seem to take their time with their interview season (not a bad thing necessarily).

Read back through the thread! No one knows how many people are in the small pool.

The interview is very laid back from what I remember. The school is great if you're a very laid back collaborative type person. If you're super competitive, you may feel a little bit out of place here.

I love the way the curriculum is set up. They teach a systems based style (for example in biochem you learn about blood biochemistry while we learn cardio in anatomy and histology), and there seems to be an increasing amount of problem based learning from what I could tell, especially with the opening of our new building. The teachers are very helpful, and definitely seem to be here to teach as opposed to some schools where most professors teach to support their research careers. And the administration seems to really care about the students from what I can tell. I hope this helps. Feel free to message me if you have any other questions!

Hey guys, I was smalled pooled 9/27. Silent since. Is it bad if I call and ask about the status of my application? Thanks

How are the research opportunities, specifically for publication? Also, can any students comment on the global opportunities and traveling abroad?

Sorry I should have clarified, I've read through this and last years threads obsessively, I was just wanting to speculate about it. Looks like I will be re-reading through them again for interview prep! 🙂

If you don't hear back within the next month (giving time for holidays as well) then that seems reasonable, though I'm sure you won't get much information. On last year's thread I saw people small pooled in Sep/Oct receiving interviews in February.
