2013-2014 Rosalind Franklin University Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Secondary submitted 8/2
Secondary complete 8/15
Small-pooled 11/14
Received an II yesterday, 12/4, with the option to pick from three dates.
I got a confirmation email today to interview 1/8.

I haven't solidified any travel plans yet, but I would love to share a vehicle from the airport (if someone wants to rent... or even split cost on a taxi) with someone interviewing that day as well. I'm also willing (and hopeful) to share a hotel room. To quote a previous poster "I'm not weird". Please PM me if you are interviewing that day and would possibly be interested in coordinating any travel plans!

If you're interested in a student host (we have a new program), e-mail [email protected] - We're running the program through there.

Sorry I should have clarified, I've read through this and last years threads obsessively, I was just wanting to speculate about it. Looks like I will be re-reading through them again for interview prep! 🙂

If you want to talk to a current student, definitely e-mail [email protected]! We recently started a new interviewee mentoring/hosting program, and we'll gladly connect you with a host and/or a mentor if you think that would help you learn more about the school.

The interview is very laid back from what I remember. The school is great if you're a very laid back collaborative type person. If you're super competitive, you may feel a little bit out of place here.

I agree 100%.

I love the way the curriculum is set up. They teach a systems based style (for example in biochem you learn about blood biochemistry while we learn cardio in anatomy and histology), and there seems to be an increasing amount of problem based learning from what I could tell, especially with the opening of our new building. The teachers are very helpful, and definitely seem to be here to teach as opposed to some schools where most professors teach to support their research careers. And the administration seems to really care about the students from what I can tell. I hope this helps. Feel free to message me if you have any other questions!

To be fair, our professors definitely are involved in research, and, as at any institution, the teaching skills vary from professor to professor. I will say, though, that there are some professors whose offices I stop by just to say hi daily. Admittedly, I'm a little bit of a suck-up, but I do think they genuinely care about our learning and not just about their own research.

Secondary app deadline has passed for Rosalind Franklin correct?

Secondary app deadline has passed for Rosalind Franklin correct?

I initially thought that the secondary deadline had passed too. But a post on the FAQ webpage suggested otherwise - "We have extended the deadline for the 2013 application cycle to December 15." However, I'm not sure if the 2013 cycle refers to this year or the previous year.

My interview impression:

The Students- I was fortunate to have two current MS2’s host me during my interview. This alleviated a lot of the difficulty associated with transportation/housing/finding where I was supposed to go the day of. It also gave me more insight into the student population. What are they like- Competitive? Relaxed? Helpful? I have to say, I felt completely at home with my two student hosts. We went out to eat, played some Wii U… it was a great time and an excellent way to meet the students. Although I expected to sleep on the couch during my stay, one of the students even gave her room to me for the night because “I should get a good night’s rest before my interview.” I simply couldn’t have asked for a more accommodating and welcoming visit. While I was hosted informally by these students, they are working hard to establish a more formal CMS interviewee-hosting program. If anyone gets an ii, I would encourage you to ask the admission’s office about the possibility of being hosted by a student- it just might be setup in time for your interview.

The Interview- Interviews begin with a brief presentation from the Dean (~30min), followed by your actual interviews. During my visit, there were ~16 people interviewing. We all sat in a comfy room with coffee/tea/water at our disposal and waited to be called. There are several interviewers, but slightly less than the number of interviewees. Waits were not terrible though. The interviewers are assigned at random (?). You can have any combination of Faculty/Admissions/Student interviewers (I had two faculty and others had a combination) and each lasts around 30min. For me, it was very conversational. I think they just want to know that you can interact with people- you’re going to be a doc, right? We talked about the city, my file, and some normal ethical questions. Keep your answers succinct, be engaging, and have confidence. This is not the type of interview that is meant to crush your spirit. Note: they will occasionally ask people to speak with a 3rd interviewer. This is for your benefit- they just want to get to know you a little more. If this happens, consider it a good opportunity to impress.

The Facilities- After the interviews, we were treated to lunch in the cafeteria and a student-led tour. The food was quite good and there appeared to be enough variety, although I wasn’t looking at this aspect too much. The facilities were beautiful and absolutely state-of-the-art. I can say this having interviewed at a few places as well as working in a very prominent medical school (a top 3- whatever that means). You will want for nothing here. There’s a gym (small, but reasonably equipped), plenty of study rooms, large library, modern anatomy lab (trust me, you want good ventilation here), and even a music room equipped with pianos and guitars- all free to use (this was a really nice touch). They have apartment-style on campus housing or Navy housing essentially across the street from the school (very reasonable price- 1,300 for a 3bd/2br/garage town home).

Other- They have plenty of funded research opportunities and unfunded (?) international externships. In fact, it seems half the class does one or the other during the summer following year-1.

Hey guys I got this email from CMS yesterday which said primary screening complete, app remains in consideration which means I am in pool of applicants who may receive interview. Is this the small pool email?

yes

Cool, thanks. Anyone know the rate at which small pooled applicants actually get an interview?

This is unclear. Although it appears small pool is a first step to an ii

GL

I wish I would have asked a company to give me a dollar for everytime these two questions are asked, double if twice in the same page. My cycle would be paid for.

The only real answer to this question? At the rate that the admissions committee decides to offer them interviews. No one knows the size of the small pool.

I have been complete since early August, with no word. Anyone else?
I've been complete since Oct 2nd and no word...but that's better than a rejection👍

Is the primary screening taking the full 6-8 weeks that they state in the email or is that a generic time frame?

I interviewed here recently and was given a third interview. Has anyone else experienced this? I'm wondering why they give out third interviews.

honestly, i think it was just to give a faculty member an opportunity to interview someone else. and you were prob just picked at random. i couldnt say whether its good or bad.

Third interviews are given if there is a discrepancy between your scores with regard to the interview.

Good news: One of your interviewers really liked you.

Bad news: One of your interviewers wasn't wowed by you.

The third interviewer's score will be the one counted.

Thus, having a third interview is, technically, neither a good nor a bad thing. Interviewees tend to panic about it, but ultimately, it's just a way to make sure that if you had a biased interviewer, someone who is a "master interviewer" gets to evaluate you and give their feedback.

Thanks! This was my feeling going into the third interview. One of my interviews was fantastic and I didn't click, personality wise, with the other interviewer. Unfortunately, my third interview was my worst of the season (of 8 so far). The interviewer was really interrogating me and I totally cracked under the pressure. However, I am glad I had the experience so that I can prepare for this type of interview going forward. Too bad. I really liked the school, students and location (Chicago). I'll be waiting for my rejection haha.

Small pooled! Complete Early October.

Any update on LCME review? I thought I saw "mid December" as the re-review date.

I wouldn't overanalyze the interview. I know several of the "master interviewers" and they're all extremely objective people. If you were asked a lot of questions (interrogated?), it was just to see if you're able to think critically. There really is no way to know how you did on the interview. Many people come out of interviews feeling as if they performed fantastically and then get rejected, and some go into the interview thinking they were awful and presented themselves very well.

We submit our update to the LCME on December 15 and then we hear back in February, so you won't hear anything at all until then.

I would strongly suggest that you continue to check the website. The school is being really transparent about the process, and they'll relay all updates there.

Thank you! You've been so incredibly helpful in this forum. =)

My pleasure! To repay me (you knew there were strings, right?) if anyone could copy and paste my or @ahutni3 's answers to re-asked questions, I would be greatly appreciative. We're getting a lot of repeat questions, even on the same page of the thread, and I must admit that the "what is the small pool halp HALP" questions are getting to me a little bit.

Interviewed here today and absolutely loved it! Would love to go here. Interviews were very conversational and open to the interviewees guidance/direction, and the tour guides (one of whom might be on here :=] ) really sold the school. Good luck all.

I am certain that none of your tour guides would ever deign to stoop so low as to post on this wretched site (HI!)

What is the small pool halp HALP

I believe it means they've looked over your app and you could potentially receive an II. I received this email, assuming it's small pool? (Oh Lord please let it actually be the small pool)

At this time, your application remains under consideration with the Admissions Committee. This means you are in the pool of applicants who may be invited to interview with The Chicago Medical School. However, this does not guarantee an invitation and you may be invited to interview or declined an interview at anytime during the admissions process.

Hahaha someone had to ask it on this page of the thread! Wouldn't be the CMS thread without it.

Yes, that is the small-pool email.

Has anybody tried contacting this school by phone? Were you able to reach someone?

I've been complete since September 24, and I haven't heard anything from them at all. I tried calling them but I'm not able to reach a person to speak with.

When I was an applicant, Audrey Hayes was my go to resource. She's an admissions counselor for the school, and she's incredibly helpful. Keep in mind with the holidays coming up, it might get a little difficult to reach people until the new year, but hopefully you can get through!

These schools get like 10K applications/year. I'm not sure what calling them will accomplish- It will likely result in a very generic response... this season has been very busy and we're working hard to get through each applicant as quickly as possible. You're best bet is probably to wait it out. GL

Sorry, but I have to agree here. Definitely call if it makes you feel better (the admissions staff is lovely and will tell you whatever they can) but the school doesn't take pre-interview updates so it won't affect your application.

We get a lot of applications, and I know it's frustrating to wait, but right now, that's the best option.

i finished my app in october and havent heard back should i be worried?

You guys finished your apps at their busiest time of the year. I wouldn't be surprised if it took them until well after the new year to get back to you. Keep in mind, by around that time of year, a committee that meets only a few times a month has to get through 10,000+ applications.

👍Secondary complete Oct 5th (relatively late). Small pool today, at last

I was just talking to a friend today in our masters program. They started interviewing them today, and the last day of those interviews is January 30th. So to everyone still waiting for an interview, few (if any) invites will likely be going out to the general population until mid to late January after they're done interviewing our masters students for spots. But rest assured there will still be plenty of interviews for everyone between February and April. Good luck, and try to relax over the next month or so. Remember, worrying doesn't help anything. 🙂
