2013-2014 Stanford University Application Thread

Is Stanford receptive to pre-ii updates
From the Stanford website:

"Updates to an application will be accepted only after an applicant has been invited to interview. Interview decisions are made based on information submitted in the AMCAS application, Stanford Supplemental Application, and letters of recommendation.

It is important that we maintain a consistent and equitable standard for all applications to be considered with the same basis of information. If applicable, additional information can be submitted after the day of your interview.

When submitting additional information, please indicate that you have been interviewed or we may not include updates with your file. Acceptable updates include any significant developments in scholarly endeavors or projects, or additional letters of recommendation. Please do not send additional coursework or transcripts unless we have specifically requested such information from you."

So, just to double-check with everybody - it sounds like most people who have already interviewed (either MD or MD PhD) have NOT heard a decision yet even though "December" was supposed to be the notification deadline? (I interviewed a few months ago and have heard nothing...it's driving me crazy! When I called the MD PhD office yesterday I got voicemails saying everybody was gone till the 6th)

I think that means there won't be any action until the 6th...

STANFORD, YOU KILLIN ME. If I live in NYC and have an interview next month at UCSD, is that grounds for an in-the-area email?

The caps locks startled me -- thought you had gotten an acceptance call 😱

Of those people who have interviewed and are waiting, has anyone sent in an update?

Interviewed 10/16... told we'd hear back late december.... still no mail or phone calls. Don't know whether to totally give up or feel hopeful

10-11, same boat as you. I feel like quite a few people in that time range haven't heard anything yet.

Hang in there y'all! Hopefully this week will be yours!

I'm getting the feeling that Stanford is moving towards a semi non-rolling policy this year, since it only gave out acceptances to the tippy top interviewees and still hasn't given one word to the rest of its applicants and interviewees. It looks like they're probably waiting for everyone (or nearly everyone) to interview before they send out the rest of the acceptances.

Still have my fingers crossed for an II, though I'm starting (well, perhaps more than that) to feel a bit passed over. Has anyone received one recently? Does Stanford do pre-interview rejections?

Someone posted a couple days ago saying he/she got an interview invite for mid-January, and that date would be the 9th interview date. That means that there are still 6 interview days left, totaling about 180 spots (slightly less than that if they've started to fill in the 10th interview date). I think by this point, Stanford should be done or almost done reviewing all of their apps, so they might end up going back to previous apps and issuing them IIs later on in the cycle. And yes, Stanford does do pre-interview rejections, except unlike last year, it looks like they're sending them after their interview season ends in March.

Hey, I interviewed on 10/2 and sent Mr. Perez (he was the one who called/emailed me about the interview) an update in early December, he replied with a polite but very brief thank you. Still no word yes or no on the final decision here either

Thanks for your reply. I'm considering sending one in as well.

The wait is absolutely brutal.

To those few who have been accepted, did anything change/appear on your secondary & interview portal?

Final Decisions are by mail.

I know (which is completely baffling being as Stanford is the heart of Silicon Valley).

But the reason I ask is that at another school I interviewed, applicants have found that a special tab (that doesn't lead anywhere) appears for those who are accepted that doesn't show up for those who are not.

Final Decisions are by mail.

When someone asked whether decisions would still be sent by snail-mail at our interview day, I vaguely remember them saying that they were going to try to do email this year to save us the agony. Hopefully I'm not mis-remembering and that is in fact the case, hahha.

EDIT: Ignore this post. Jeghaber has a terrible memory 😛

I remember being told the opposite: that they definitely only do snail mail. I interviewed on 10/16...perhaps their plan changed as the year went on.

Hahah, I interviewed on the 16th too. You're most likely right then -- it's all very hazy to me 😛

I was looking through last year's thread and it seems as though at least one person who was accepted did not receive a phone call or voicemail message from the Dean but still got an acceptance letter in the mail.

Here's to receiving some blessed thick envelopes.

There were a couple of people who didn't get phone calls and only got thick envelopes in the mail, especially towards the end of their interview season.

Nice! Congrats.
Also, if I'm not mistaken, there were only 3 dates after october 30th, right? nov. 13th, dec. 9th, and dec. 18th? Anyone remember if the dean said anything about how long they spend per interview day?

Either way, I'll make sure to keep paying my phone bills just in case one of those beloved calls comes my way.

Judging from last year's thread, they rank people and make decisions pretty much right away (within 2 weeks). Also, their post-ranking system is all electronic according to this: http://med.stanford.edu/irt/web_applications/mesa.html. I think like what smarts1 wrote before, it looks like Stanford is kind of semi non-rolling this year and is only giving acceptances for now to the top ranked applicants in each group, and they might be waiting for everyone to interview before making final decisions on the remaining applicants.

I think you may be right.

However, if you are right, then interviewees were lied to when we were told that a large batch of us would hear by December 20. Even in the most charitable way to look at the situation, Stanford's admission's office is at the very least withholding information from us about how their admission process has changed.

I find it odd that Stanford didn't keep their promise to their early interviewees, and when someone on the thread emailed them, they said they were trying to get your decisions to you guys as quick as possible, but that was almost 2 weeks ago... I guess maybe one of you guys could email them again? Or call them (though it's really hard to get someone to pick up the phone there).

It truly is very difficult to get anyone on the phone there. Also, I sent an email asking about when we might hear back and got essentially the same response as the other poster (something to the effect of "we are working diligently to get this done")

The waiting game is the worst, and it's really sad that schools can't be more transparent with us.
