2013 - 2014 University at Buffalo (SUNY) Wait List Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Provided they haven't accepted more than 150 outright, I can't really imagine how the percentages of people accepted off the waitlist would deviate that much from what they were the past 4 years (barring the chance that way way more people accepted their acceptances than in the past, which I suppose is possible). Them not telling us thirds, at least in theory, shouldn't change much.

Well also, since they didn't post the thirds it could be that people don't have a bias about posting on the forums. I'm sure before not many bottom waitlisters posted.

a possible reason for them not telling us the thirds is maybe because they don't necessarily pull people in a sequential order. every class has a certain profile - consider minorities, in/out state, traditional/non-trad, male/female ratios. going in a ranked order would not produce the kind of class they want to form, and hence they would end up pulling some lower ranked people before others. by not releasing the ranks, they just get rid of any confusion which might result from this. my $0.02.

The last time I talked with Mr. Rosso via email (last week), he said that wait list movement was normal for this time of the year. UB has stressed that the wait list is ranked based on your final score during the interview and that they simply go from person to person making their way down the list. I highly doubt they would pick and choose a lower scored interviewee over a higher scored one...but i'm sure stranger things have happened.

Has anyone RECENTLY emailed Mr. Rosso to see if any more information will be given out based on wait list ranking/tier at this stage of the game? It just stinks not knowing our positions/incessantly checking email every hour. Does anyone have any other recent information from Mr. Rosso or anyone else?

Very solid point

Just got accepted now.

Sent 2 letters of update and interest in late April and May. My second interview with a student went absolutely horribly and I thought I was at the bottom third, but I guess my first interview saved me here!

Congrats!

Well it looks like this week marks the slowest week so far for buffalo.

Keep your heads up everyone!

I think this is gonna be the norm from now onwards. if anything it's going to slow down even more.

Congrats Pathologist333! Good to know the wait list will keep moving 🙂

Just wanted to post here since I'm not very active and say thank you to those who made the thread and continue to update it. I'm also on the waitlist and will post to see if there is any movement. Thanks again and if we all can get in, hopefully, I hope to see all of you guys there!

still no news?!? i'm doomed

Somebody posted in the main thread that they were accepted today. There's still plenty of time, so stay positive. The wait list moved through the end of June the past few years and SDN just represents a small portion of individuals who may be on the list, meaning others could be accepted all the way through orientation and simply not be posting. Don't allow yourself to be upset until 8/12, which is the day after orientation. Hang in there!

I've had rough days, too -- I just want you to know you're not alone and there's still hope for all of us. Good luck to you, too - rooting for you!

I know of a few people who were accepted in July in the years past.

Accepted via email this morning. Making the hard decision to withdraw, and best of luck for anyone still waiting =)

Congratulations on your other acceptance and thanks for giving one of us other WL'ers a shot 🙂

Any idea whether or not the time you applied matters and when I might hear back? I got wait-listed on May 17th and I must say I was very surprised. I know that it says that their wait-lists are unranked, however my GPA was below their average while my ACT was above it. Any idea how I can better my chances of getting in? I was thinking of writing a letter but I don't know if "unranked" means that it won't matter what I do. Hopefully, if I am correct, my 4th quarter grades will be higher than my overall GPA that I applied with. Also if I do make a letter, who should I write it to, and who should it be addressed t0 (Dear Admissions Office, Dear [Insert Name Here], etc.)?

As you can probably tell I'm stressing out right now 😀

Don't. Go enjoy this summer, go find a girl you like (and don't extend a high school relationship into college). Try and find something you enjoy studying in college, and remember, community college is a great idea for most people.

Also, this isn't an undergrad waitlist thread. Regardless, go have some fun

Wanted to share: I spoke with Mr. Rosso at the end of last week. He had just revisited the tier idea with Dr. S, but Dr. S. decided to hold off. They feel it causes unnecessary anxiety on our end. He reminded me that they made it to the bottom third last year, and that individuals were pulled from the wait list until orientation.

Maybe I am in the minority here, but I would personally feel that unnecessary anxiety would be caused from the fear of the unknown, in other words, from not knowing our positions/ranks. Having at least some sense as to where you fall/what your chances are is enough to put most people at ease. I'm sure Mr. Rosso gets flooded, and I mean flooded, with emails from waitlistees asking about positions/where they are at/how fast the wait list is moving, etc...which I'm sure gets monotonous after awhile.

Nah, you're right. Most normal people would be less anxious when they know more, rather than the other way around. I don't buy the anxiety argument at all; if anything, that statement makes this year's wait list movement even fishier to me. I wish we could get to the bottom of why we're seeing such slow and crappy waitlist movement.

He's also said that waitlist movement has been the same as it was last year. Based on this thread and the people I know on the waitlist IRL, I don't buy that either. Something just isn't adding up. I wish I could just know if I'm getting in or not already

I just withdrew from the wait list so I hope that gives you guys a little more room. A loss for UB is a win for NYMC! 🙂 Best of luck to everyone here still waiting to get accepted. Don't give up on your dream!

Thank you, and best of luck at NYMC!

Hey guys - even though I've already been accepted off the wait list, I have still been following the thread just to keep tabs on how things are going. Friend of mine who is not on SDN was accepted Monday morning. Just wanted to offer some more optimism and positive energy for all those still waiting. Movement is still happening. Keep ya heads up!

Hey guys,

Been following this thread for a while, but I have not posted yet. I was accepted on Monday really late in the day. It was so late in fact that when I called to confirm the admissions office was closed. Keep your chins up, I didn't really expect to get in this early as my MCAT wasn't great.

I can also give you a little update; the currently accepted students are encouraged to provide their emails and phone numbers for a list serve that will be used to send mass email. Thus far only 115 people have given over their info, which means that there are about 25 people who did not bother giving their info for one reason or another. Not sure if that means they haven't filled the class or that people are still waiting on other schools before committing to UB but it certainly looks like there will be more movement on the list. Also since people's phone numbers are given, it looks like there is about an even split between accepted people from the 716 Buffalo area code and from out of the area.

Hope this helps anyone who is checking this forum daily; I know I was. Cheers guys, and good luck! 🙂

Thank you so much Kolev. It's great to know that people who are excited to attend are still out there to help those of us still waiting! Best of luck to you.

Someone received an acceptance this morning and posted a "versus" discussion. I'm hopeful for some more movement next week!

I got it, and it doesn't seem to actually be saying anything new. Man, compared to last year's system, they really dropped the ball

I think the only real thing that is different is not knowing our tiers... which is pretty significant for us but.. I don't think they changed anything else.

I guess it would be fair to assume that most of us who haven't heard a thing would have been in the bottom third at this point...

That's really annoying. I was so happy with my interviews here

It's annoying but bottom third exists for a reason. We still have a little less than 2 months now to wait. I think they will start doing phone calls soon.. This is the email from last year around this time:

Dear Wait List Candidate,

The Admissions Committee has finished its interviewing, and we have filled our Medical Class.

This year we had an extremely competitive applicant pool. Our Wait List is a ranked list, and you have been placed officially on this list in the "middle third" according to the final score you received after your interview here. We are currently accepting candidates from the "middle third". The "upper third" of our wait list is gone!

On Monday, June 24th, we will begin filling any/all openings in our 2013 Freshman Medical Class by DIRECT PHONE CALL to the next candidate, and if "LIVE" contact is not made after using all your available phone nos., we must continue to proceed down the wait list to the next highest ranked candidate.

IT IS IMPERATIVE that you advise us in writing of all DAYTIME phone numbers (as many as you want to provide us - more the better) where you and your designees (parents, relatives, friends, neighbors, etc.) can be reached in person. We CANNOT leave ANY offer of acceptance on an answering machine or voice message system. If our phone call of acceptance is in the morning, you would have until 4:00 p.m. EDT to call us back with your FINAL decision. If our phone call is in the afternoon, you would have until 9:00 a.m. EDT the next morning to get back to us.

If you are accepted to another Medical School and NO LONGER wish to remain on our wait list, it would be courteous to advise us RIGHT AWAY. Candidates on Wait Lists would deeply appreciate it.

Thank you for your time and understanding in this matter.

Sincerely,

James J. Rosso
Admissions Advisor
U. at Buffalo Medical School

Aside from that email from Rosso a while back, not a thing. I'm submitting AMCAS take II tomorrow. I really, really, really, really want to know where the hell I went wrong with this school. I am almost certain it isn't happening in any case

I feel you. I just submitted Saturday, but only to one school I had never applied to before just in case there is a chance the wait list moves. I submitted around the same time last cycle and I don't think I was verified until beginning of August so it gives me a little wiggle room before I drop the big $$$$ again. My poor wallet.
