So does anyone know what this "structured format" is on the first 4 questions? I've heard it's something where they ask us and don't give us any feedback on our answers?

Yeah the first three questions are standard, and everyone gets the same ones. I think "why medicine" is always asked, and it seems like they ask some kind of ethical question as well. They don't give any feedback or respond to your answers, but it didn't feel too intimidating; my interviewers were nice and kind of smiled at me as I was answering. After those three questions it's more conversational.
 
Can anyone give any input from last year/previous years on how likely it is to get an interview here in the later months (October-March) if you were complete really early on? I am starting to feel a silent rejection.

Hmm I can't comment on that. I do know of a couple classmates of mine who interviewed in December if that helps. Another thing you could do would be to look at last years thread.

Congrats on the other interview invited everybody!! It has been great seeing all the interviews walking around the med school and I know a lot of my classmates have too, so if you have any questions during the day you could honestly ask almost any med student and they'd be happy to help... As long as it isn't test day 🙂
 
I just got an II here! I was wondering about the interview day. They offered a date of Dec 6 because I am URM. Any other URM applicants taking that date? Or are you looking at trying to get it sooner?

Been following this thread for a while, but this is my first post. I just submitted my secondary a few minutes ago; does anyone know the first available interview dates?

II today. No email just checked my status page and the tab was there. Dates available to me were 11/13, 11/15, 11/18 and 11/20

Have you received an interview invite? If so, the interview dates will be up on your application page.

Oh strange but congrats! Was your email address correct on the website? Just saw some happy interviewers walk by me on their tour - wishing luck to all the sdners interviewing!
 
Strange question: can you submit seconday without an invite? I can't find the seconday request in my email, but I definitely submitted it.

Doesn't Iowa screen? I'd wait until I got the invite, wouldn't want to risk it. It could be like how Einstein deals with their secondary, meaning if you send it in without the invite email you get automatically rejected.
 
Yes they do. And I submitted and had the app fee waiver waived without amcas fap. I just don't have the secondary request email. Maybe I got it and it got deleted. I'm just wondering if I could have filled it out without getting the secondary request.
 
Just got the II today!! Looks like they sent out a little batch of invites today (I got mine via email for those of you who are wondering). I picked up the first date I could, which was Nov 13th. The other available dates were Nov 18th, 20th and 22nd.

Can't wait for next month!

Does anyone know if the interview day ends any earlier than the suggested 5pm? I may have to scramble for a ride back to the airport.

It depends when your actual interview is. If you do the CBL first and then your interview directly after, then you'll be done around 3-330. I was the last interview of the day and finished at around 4-4:30....

@Valyria, I just received an II today! I decided to take a sooner date - Nov. 13th actually instead of waiting until Dec. 6th.

The current students said when I interviewed (late Sept) that we would prolly hear back in 5-6 weeks.
 
I am pretty sure that the 16th is the first day the let people know about acceptances. And they told me that they would put an acceptance in an email as well as a letter, if I remember correctly...
 
Hey guys, I'm in kind of a dilemma about whether or not I should go ahead with my interview next month. I've been lucky enough to get accepted to my flagship state school, osu, as well as a few others. I've zero ties to iowa and don't really see myself moving there, I've never been, not even once. But I'm afraid of dismissing it out of hand without giving it a try. What do students like about it that they don't see in other schools? Do they have some sort of easy way to become in state after the first year, or do they give out recruitment scholarships that I might be eligible for? Just trying to see if it's worth missing a day of work, hotel, and a six hour drive each way.

Interview tomorrow - so nervous! First med school interview ever. :scared::scared::scared: And Iowa's one of my top choices. :scared:

Hey all. I got an acceptance at a different school yesterday (!!) but Iowa is my state school so I am waiting on pins and needles to hear from them. I went ahead and gave the friendly admissions folks a call and asked when the first day they were going to be sending out acceptances would be (I know--but I couldn't stop myself. And she was super nice.)
She said she "didn't know the specific day but it would be soon."
Tomorrow maybe??

Good luck everyone interviewing! It is a fun interview day--the format is a little strange/different, but the interviewers are very friendly and kind by all accounts.

Every interview begins with three "standard" questions, which are the same for everyone, and the interviewers aren't supposed to respond to your answers. They ask "why medicine", and usually some ethical question, or what qualities you have that would make you a great physician. After those standard questions, it becomes more of a conversation. To prepare, just be able to talk about your interest in medicine and in Carver. It's really very relaxed, everyone is friendly, so try not to stress out too much. Good luck!

Anyone current students here have any insight as to whether being a student here hinders one's ability to match to a residency away from the midwest? I think this is a great medical school, but my goal is to match to a residency on the coast.

This is a good question to ask during interview and also checking their match list (available on the website) could give you some insight as well. Maybe, don't phrase the question exactly as "hinders your ability", since it's a very good school and will prep you well for any residency, but just asking for how many people match into residencies in CA would be totally acceptable, I think.
 
So, I had my interview Friday. It was wonderful. The interview didn't go as well as I liked - I feel like I monopolized the conversation? It's also really tough to try and make eye contact with two different people at once! The only thing is that they knew NOTHING about me at all, so I feel like all I really could have done in 25 minutes was really mess up, not really stand out. If that makes sense.

A woman came in after the interviews to talk about admissions. She said that they'll accept about 120 out of state students by January of the 400 they interview, and put a lot more on the waitlist because there's a lot of movement among OOSers. For instaters, they'll accept about 60/70 of the 300 they interview by January. Any news you hear from now until January is good news. After January, everyone will be put back into a "final pool", one for IS one for OOS, and they'll re-evaluate and send out another batch of acceptances at the end of March. Then, rejections and waitlist ranks after that.

Loved it. Top choice. Want to go here. Please, please, please, Carver! :scared:

That's interesting. I was told (and their stat sheets confirm) that they have ~50 OOS matriculants and ~100 IS. I wonder if they have changed their percentages for this coming year.

They hope to matriculate 42 OOS and 100 IS. They just have, apparently, very high rates of losing OOSers to other schools and have to way over-accept to get those 42.
