2013-2014 University of Texas - Houston Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I am sure it is, but the initial screening could be quantative, using a simple formula of (GPA x 10) + MCAT, those who got II and shared their stats at UT hou, the scores were 65, 69, 70, 70, 70, 71, 72.
while at Baylor 70, 71,73,73,74,74,75,75,77,78,78,78,80,81

I have not seen anyone with an MCAT score greater than 35 get an II yet! Is it possible that UT Houston is targeting MCAT scores 29 to 35 figuring that those with greater than 35 are going to choose Baylor or UTSW?

I'm quite sure this is not the case

Does anyone know when the admissions committee meets after interviews? If you get an interview does that mean you've cleared all the MCAT/GPA/extracurricular screenings and now they just want to see if you're personable, but otherwise, they would want to accept you? Might be a silly question, but I will throw it out there anyway.

Sadly, no it does not mean you've cleared the MCAT/GPA/extracurricular screenings.
2 years ago, after not receiving an acceptance my interviewer told me that my GPA was the reason I didn't receive admission.

I have a friend with a 36 that's interviewing on Friday. He's just not on SDN.

I think UT Houston just slower than other UT schools. Does UT Houston give pre-match acceptance?

They do but they usually fill most of their class through the match.

I really am bummed I haven't heard back from any Texas schools yet 🙁

Interview Invite today! Very Happy! Last remaining interview as well!

Congrats sharmi!! If you don't mind me asking, are you an OOS applicant?

In state and local. Moved with family to Houston last summer. Very non-trad. Was a Software Engineer for many years. Currently doing research at MD Anderson. Complete - don't remember - definitely by July since I attended the UTMB interview on the very first date. Submitted TMDSAS application in June.

Ok, I am officially depressed.

3.65

Tons of ECs, and only 2 interviews so far. I submitted in early may too.

Don't get down, those are great stats. It's only about halfway through, so more is probably coming your way. I'm still waiting to hear from a few schools and it seems like the wait takes forever 🙂

II today 😀 yeaaaahhhh. Transmitted early August. 3.7+ gpa . 28-31 MCAT. I really thought I was done for the interview season.

Edit: they still had oct 25 and basically all of Nov for interviews.

Is UT Houston responsive to in the area emails? Interviewing at Baylor on Nov 8 and could use the savings on flight $

So it says UTH allows a spouse to tour with us during the day. Is it really ok to use this option? Seems strange but of course my wife would go if given an opportunity.

I've seen some applicants' parents at my UTSW interview; I don't see why bringing a spouse to an interview would be strange if the school encourages it.

several people have done it over the years. it's always a little awkward for the spouse, having to explain that they're a guest and not an applicant.

but if she wants to, by all means bring her, and have her dress appropriately. or bring her in town and show her the school after the interview.

Sorry to repeat myself, but does anyone know if UT Houston responsive to in the area emails?

Thank you both for the response. I think we'll wait to see if I get in somewhere and do another look at that point.

7502: I don't see the harm in calling admissions and asking. Otherwise you might search last years UTH thread and see if anyone has answered this before.

it has worked for people in the past. they're responsive, but don't assume that automatically means you'll get an invitation.

to be fair, pretty much everybody in Texas is "in the area." A 3-4 hour drive isn't all that far for an interview.

Still crossing my fingers for this school. I've interviewed at UTMB and Foster, UT Southwestern is in a couple of weeks. Really would like one more invite from Houston or Tech. Good luck to everyone still waiting!

Nice!!! Are you traditional?

There are a few hotel recommendations that have shuttles and I was wondering if anyone has used them before (do they drop you off right at the door, did they get there with plenty of time etc). I'd like to just leave my car at the hotel and take the shuttle so I don't have to drive and park.

which hotels?

parking is actually fairly easy.

Parking is free if you use the garage they specify in the instructions. You park literally right across the street in a garage, get a ticket, and when you sign in, they give you another ticket that you'll use when you drive out of the garage at the end of the day. After you feed your first into the machine you feed the next which will pay for your days worth of parking. It's definitely worth it to park!

interview invite last week. transmitted early august. very excited!

Interviewed here this last friday:

Parking is easy as mentioned. After walking across the street and into the medical school, they had us sign in with the security guard and then wait to check in for the day. There were probably more students then interviewees sitting around and they sat and answered any questions we had. After check in, we did the typical breakfast with video and powerpoint presentations. Then we either went to interviews (with a student guide) and did an afternoon tour or did the tour in the morning and had afternoon interviews. Lunch was in between tours and interviews. The tour itself was part bus and part walking. We got to see the heart center and watch 15min of a heart transplant surgery. Then we saw the student housing and gym before heading back to school to tour the school itself and the hospital. We went out the helipad and got to see a life flight land with a patient.

I was extremely impressed by everything and everyone I met throughout the day. The TMC is truly amazing. The school itself had great facilities and the students seemed to love it. I wasn't sure what the students in such a large school in a large city would be like but they left a fantastic impression. They went out of their way to answer any questions we had, helped us get to where we needed to be and offered words of encouragement. Student housing options seemed like a great option for those who could get it but I was told there is plenty of housing close by. It seemed like either you payed higher rent to live near the rail or payed less to live elsewhere but made up that cost in parking fees. Did I mention how amazing the TMC is?

The curriculum is pretty standard. They take quite a few classes at once with first year being normal function and second year being the associated pathophys. I was (and still am) hesitant about the week long test schedule but every student I talked to said they had the same fear coming in but they like the focused week of studying and then relaxed time afterwards. They do have syllabi for their classes so they know from the beginning exactly what is expected of them and plan accordingly. Days seem to be pretty full but I can't say how much of that is required and how much is lecture that you can watch from home. Grading is not on a curve so as long as you make the numerical grade you get the appropriate H/HP/P. There is obviously a ton of research opportunities and chances to shadow anyone who's willing to take you. The interviews were both conversational. No curveballs; they just seemed to want to get to know who I was that can't be told on paper.

I interviewed here on the first day... It was amazing. I know they don't give a lot of prematches but it would be amazing if I got one.

Does anyone know if OOS acceptances have started going out?

You are right. Well, so much for using this thread as a way to find out about OOS acceptances. Thanks.

UT Houston accepts the vast majority of people through the match, don't be discouraged if you didn't receive a prematch acceptance.

I'm out-of-state. There is no match for us. All acceptances are either "pre-match" or on a rolling basis after Oct15

Hey all. Just wanted to confirm that UT Houston did begin giving OOS acceptances on October 15. Good luck!
