2013-2014 Wright State University Boonshoft School of Medicine

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Been complete since 8/21.....any hope left? 🙁

Of course! I didn't get an invite until December last year. Interview invites are all year round. Almost every school will be sending out invites months from now. You just need to be patient.

Haha thanks guys I'm a little neurotic about everything and it doesn't help that my stats are just average. I guess all I can do is wait :]

My suggestion would be to delete your account on here...checking these forums is only going to make it worse haha

For anyone who has interviewed how did you get from the airport to the school/hotel? I am not 25 and have been trying to avoid renting cars since it is so expensive when you are underage (if you can rent at all). There doesn't seem to be any public transportation that I have found.

Rejected.
28 MCAT, 3.6 cGPA, 3.75 sGPA. Out of state. It was expected lol. I need to pull up my MCAT by actually studying for it this time.

Depending on how close your hotel is to the school (there are quite a few immediately surrounding it), you could almost taxi your way from the airport to the hotel and then walk to the interview and back. It would save a lot of money.

Waitlisted today by mail. anyone know how much movement it gets from years past?

thank you, ill start some digging. interview was the week of Sep.16th btw. pretty bummed about the decision. but here's to some more waiting!

Interview this Wednesday (the 23rd)! Definitely excited and nervous. Wright State is my top choice!

I'm holding an acceptance and will probably keep it until the spring. Don't worry, I'm sure there are plenty of folks who will give up their seat later on!

I'm not trying to be a jerk, I'm just waiting to see what kind of aid they give me.

When you mailed back your acceptance letter, did you get email conformation or anything when they processed it?

I got an email today saying they received my acceptance. I mailed it Monday so I'm surprised it got there so fast. Probably because where I mailed it from is fairly close to Wright State.

I'm the most paranoid person ever, stuck it in the mail Saturday, still no email, should I call and check?

Edit: Got the email, nvm.

Going out on a limb and guessing they just copied and pasted from last years. Remember how they didn't initially account for amcas not having our social?

Hey everyone,

I just scheduled my interview for Wednesday November 6th! Can anyone who has already interviewed provide any inside information regarding what type of questions to expect during the interview or specific things to prepare for? Thanks!

-Jake

Complete since Aug 21 and still no word....my stats aren't too good: ~3.5 with huge upward trend and 34 MCAT. Wondering if this is a silent rejection for me......

I was also complete Aug 21 and my stats are 3.7 and 36 as well as IS. I didn't hear back from them until last week so I wouldn't get too worried about not hearing anything yet

You will have two one-hour interviews. Typically, one of those interviews will be with a second year student and one will be with either a basic science faculty member or a clinical faculty member. Interviews are very laid back. It is hard to say what type of questions to expect during the interview b/c every interviewer is different. Just be prepared like you would for any type of 'job' interview. Most likely your interview will end up being very conversational. Don't sweat it. Just try and be yourself and relax. I know it's hard but don't get all worked up and nervous. Wright State's interviews are notoriously easy going. It is much easier to get to know someone that way.

Accepted! OOS, interviewed on 10/8.

Congratulations to those who are accepted! I know many of you are probably not quite set on going to Wright State at the moment. It's early, you still got interviews, etc. If you have any questions about the school, or housing, or life in Dayton, or anything like that feel free to post. There are a number of current students who check these forums regularly (or at least there were) who can answer your questions. Feel free to PM me if you want to stay anonymous and I'll remove your name and post a reply. The same goes for everyone else as well (i.e. those waitlisted, interviewing, applying, etc.).

You still have plenty of time. If it's any consolation I don't think your stats are the problem. Just be patient. At this point there is nothing you can really do anyways. So just try and relax.

I got a question- does Wright State offer any kinds of merit based or recruitment scholarships?

I got a question- does Wright State offer any kinds of merit based or recruitment scholarships?
I'd like to know that as well. What kind of applicants would receive this?

Yes there are merit based scholarships. For more specifics on the type of scholarships that are offered and when you can expect to hear about scholarships you really need to contact the school directly or check the website.

I know students do receive randoms scholarships for a few hundred to a few thousand dollars from year-to-year. One of my classmates just received a scholarship for like $5000 for the year and we are a good 4+ months into our school year. You don't really have to be a 'top of the class' student to get those. As long as you fill out the yearly scholarship application you will get screened to get what you can. That may mean you don't get anything first year, then a $2000 scholarship second year, then a $800 scholarship third year, then none your forth. Obviously, there are the full/half tuition scholarships out there somewhere. I imagine they are few and far between like they are for most medical schools. Again, for more specific information you should really contact the school directly.

I received a PM w/ a couple of questions. I am going to paraphrase some of the message below so others can add their input if they want.
What are some places that are worth checking out in Dayton (shopping, restaurants, etc.)? Also, where are a few housing locations, and in your opinion, what do you think about them/what have you heard about them from your classmates?

Off the top of my head here are some cool places to check out around Dayton:

Yellow Springs (www.yellowspringsohio.org): A little hippie town just outside of Dayton that has a number of good restaurants, bars, and coffee shops etc. It is a 'unique' place to visit. They sometimes have fesitvals and art shows that are worth going to see if you need a break. Some students go out there and study. Also, not that it matters but, Dave Chappelle lives out there so you might run into him if you are lucky. You actually see him pretty often around Dayton in general if you go out enough.

Oregon District (http://oregondistrict.org/): Again another place that has number of good restaurants and bars. It is located in downtown Dayton. Students go out there from time to time to grab a few drinks.

The park system in Dayton is actually pretty nice. There are a lot of nice bike trails and things like that if you enjoy those activities (http://www.metroparks.org/).

There are three major malls in Dayton that people visit. There is the Dayton Mall, which is just your standard mall. There is the The Mall at Fairfield Commons Mall which is essentially the same thing just in a different part of town. Then there is The Greene (http://www.thegreene.com/) which is an outdoor open air mall . Out of those three the only one worth going to see is The Greene in my opinion.

If you have the time the two place where I like to shop are the outlets in Jeffersonville (http://www.tangeroutlet.com/jeffersonville/) and Cincinnati (http://www.premiumoutlets.com/outlets/outlet.asp?id=79). They are both about ~45min away. But they have some pretty good deals on clothes, etc.

As for resturants, Yelp does a really good job at picking out the hidden gems in Dayton (http://www.yelp.com/search?cflt=restaurants&find_loc=Dayton,+OH,+USA). A few places that I have visited and enjoyed are the 'Olive, an Urban Dive', 'Thai 9', 'Meadowlark', 'Linh's', 'Mamma DiSalvo's', 'Butter Cafe', and 'Dewey's Pizza'. There are more but just checkout Yelp they have some good recommendations on there.

I need to get some sleep. I know doit4themunki, who is a classmate of mine, made a good posts a while back that summarizes the housing situation around Dayton. It is in one of the previous School-Specific threads. Feel free to look back and try to find it if you want. I'll try and find it and post it if I can.

Sleep is for wimps!!

Like MattyBee, I'm a current third year so feel free to me ask any questions you might have as well. I think the extreme amount of stress and anxiety I experienced applying to med school has left a sort of soft spot in my heart for all the current applicants going through the same thing... so if there is anything I can help you out /that can to alleviate any of that anxiety I'd be more than happy to do it. I'm a bit disconnected from admissions now, but I was on the committee last year so I may be able to answer some specific questions about that too.

ANYWAY housing....

I looked around at my old posts about housing and they are somewhat fragmented around different threads so I'll try to go ahead and summarize what I know / have heard about the different housing options around here.

There are a lot of great places to live around Dayton but BSOM students typically flock to a few places in particular. The first two years most people will live in the Beavercreek / Fairborn area around WSU's campus. Third and forth year a chunk of the class ends up moving down town closer to the hospitals that we rotate in (but lots of people stay by campus as well). And of course there are a lot of people that will just rent random houses / condo's in the area or live at home if they have family. Wherever you decide to live you most likely won't be more than ~20 minutes away than all of the places you'll need to go to.

BEAVERCREEK -
By far the two most popular places for medical students to live are Ashton Brooke (http://www.ashtonbrookebeavercreek.com/) and Mallard Landing (http://www.mallardlandingapts.co/) . They are pretty similar as far as layouts, price, style, etc. Both are about 5 to 8 minutes (depending how you hit the traffic lights) from White Hall. The only thing is I think Ashton has one bedrooms and Mallard doesn't. For some reason (maybe because its a few minutes closer) Ashton tends to fill up pretty quick so if you get accepted later on you might have to put yourself on a waitlist. I really can't think of any complaints I heard about either complex. Both places have both students and families living there so it's nice because it provides a pretty quiet environment to study in but you still are pretty close to a lot of your friends when you need a break. I lived at Mallard Landing for the first two years so I can answer any questions specific to living there.

Some other places...

A few people I know lived at the Promenade (http://www.thepromenadeapts.com/floorplans.php). Again, never heard anything bad about this place but I don't know much about it. My friends place looked pretty nice inside.

The Lofts (http://www.loftsatwillowcreek.com/) are really new apartments in the same area. A few of my classmates lived here...from what I've seen they are SUPER nice and very new but a bit pricey.

One other place that it seems has become increasingly popular with the new first year class is Wexford on the Green (http://www.wexfordonthegreen.com/). I actually don't know anyone that lived here but if there is a current MS1 on this thread maybe they could weigh in.

Honestly I don't think you can really go wrong with any of the above places. None of the above apartment complexes are really within walking distance of campus, mostly because you have to cross over I-675 to get there. So if you're the kind of person that wants to be able to walk/bike to class, I'd recommend looking at the apartments I've listed below in Fairborn.

Oh, another option thats a little farther away (but still in Beavercreek) is living in the apartments at The Greene (the outdoor mall that MattyBee mentioned) (http://www.jupitercommunities.com/apartment/the-greene-dayton-oh-3c1409092487). These look awesome and the location is great (there are some good places to study at the Greene plus shops / restaurants / bars) but again, I think the main reason people don't live here is the price is kinda high. There are some cheaper apartments around there too but I don't know much about any of them.

FAIRBORN-
So, there are quite a few apartment complexes that are conveniently right next to campus. HOWEVER... if you do look at these places, keep in mind that more than likely most of your neighbors are going to be Wright State undergrads. Nothing against undergrads, but they tend to have a little more free time on their hands than us and therefore tend to party more frequently and loudly. I've heard some of my classmates who lived by campus come to class in the morning complaining that they were up all night from some party next door....but on the other hand, I know a lot of people who lived there who never had a single problem with noise or anything like that. What I'm trying to say is that you might be taking a bit more of a gamble if you choose to live in any of the apartment complexes on Zink road, so just keep that in the back of your head while you're looking. Anyway....

The places I've had friends live at are Peppertree Apartments (http://www.peppertreevillas.com/), Meadowrun Apartments (http://www.meadowrunapartments.com/), and The Highlands (http://highlands.mysamteam.com/). Again, never heard any specific complaints about these places... in my opinion the pro's about these places are you can walk to school, they are generally cheaper than the apartments in Beavercreek, and the availability is usually better.

Some places I would be a little hesitant about here are The Promenade and Channingway. The Promenade is also on Zink Road and I think it is fairly new so the places are nice. BUT I have definitely heard the most noise complaints about this place from classmates. The police are always around there breaking up parties and stuff like that. Channingway is down in a different part of Fairborn and I have just heard the management here is bad. I'm pretty sure everyone that lived there from my class moved out after the first year.

DOWNTOWN -
Since not a lot of people will live downtown I'm not going to go into it too much, but if you feel like being the ~*cool*~ first year who has the apartment downtown that everyone crashes at after going out in the Oregon District, a few places to look are:

Dayton Towers (http://www.vttmanagement.com/property-detail.php?property=17) - Right next to Oregon District (5 minute walk). Pretty standard apartments, nothing to amazing, nothing too awful.

The Cannery Lofts (http://www.cannerydayton.com/) - New loft style apartments, they look pretty awesome but I've heard conflicting things about management. Also the place where you park your car is across the street from the apartment building which scared me as a female (not that Dayton is abnormally unsafe but you're not tryna be walking around by yourself at 4am to your car when you have to be at the hospital)

The Landing (http://www.daytonlanding.com/) - Somewhat farther from Oregon district but still within walking distance (15 min walk?). There is the "tower" which is like normal apartments and the "village" which is like townhouses. I live here now so I can answer questions about this place too.

Random house downtown - A lot of people end up renting random houses downtown, but (obviously) just be careful if you want to do this. Ask around before you commit to anything....there are a lot of great (really cute) neighborhoods downtown (the ones that come to mind first are of course the Oregon District, South Park, and St. Anne's Hill) but sometimes the area can go from cute to notso great in like, a street. So just use some common sense when you look around and ask students who live in the area what it's like.

Personally I really enjoy living downtown but I think I would have felt a little disconnected if I lived here the first two years. But I also have a major case of FOMA.

tl;dr
Ashton Brooke or Mallard Landing is your safest bet.
Apartments on Zink Road if you want to walk / bike to class but beware of undergrads.
Downtown has lotsa places but most people don't move there until 3rd/4th year, also make sure you don't move somewhere scary.

I've become increasingly delerious as I wrote this post but I hope it was at least somewhat helpful.

Very helpful, thanks. Trying to decide between here and louisville (my only two acceptances). Louisville seems fun, but being from a smaller town in KY I think I may be more comfortable in Dayton.

If it's feasible for you, you should try to go back and visit both places (the school and the city), even if it's just to walk around. I did that when I was trying to decide between schools, and it was helpful for me to see them again when I wasn't a complete headcase like I was on interview day.

I am really hoping to hear something next wednesday. It has been a long 4 weeks since my interview!

Yea, good advice. I've been meaning to do this, but I definitely will now. For me, right now, I'm debating should I go to the fun big city, that's totally different than what im used to, or should I go to Dayton, which is a little but smaller but extremely similar to what I'm used to. Hmm..

The city a school is in is an important aspect to look at when you choose a school. But I really feel as though UofL and Wright State are pretty different schools just in general. At least, that is what I thought when I interviewed at Louisville. I don't mean to say that one is worse or better than the other. They are just different. For one, Louisville and Wright State have pretty different curricula. Also the hospital set ups are different. Also... well a lot of things I thought were quite different. I think Louisville is a great school. I would have been happy if I choose to go there but I know it would have been a different experience.

Well today marks 4 weeks post-interview and unfortunately did not hear anything. Still trying to stay positive but it seems like the later the notification the more likely it will be bad news...

That's not true by any means. The only thing that determines if you hear at four weeks or at six weeks is if they happened to get to your application in the committee meeting.

I never really thought of it that way. Well I hope they get to it soon because I would really like to start planning out my life and would love to go to Wright State!
