2014-2015 Case Western Reserve University Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Does anybody know what the current requirement is for Biochemistry for UT? I know it is necessary for CCLCM and was under the impression that it was for UT as well. I more recently read conflicting information saying it is only for CCLCM and my student interviewer told me it was not a requirement, as many of her classmates had not taken it. Thanks.

As per the website, Biochemistry IS required for UT as well as CCLCM. That might have changed though. Calling the school would clarify that.

Dear CCLCM,

Love,
sunflower18

This was especially true when dean Franco goes "we really cut down on the number of people we interview this year" and then proceed to tell us that 32/250 (13%) get in post interview 🙁

Ooohh I didn't know they were planning on cutting down who they interviewed! Yikes 🙁 I think overall about 50 people get in every year, with ~18 coming in off the waitlist... So that's a little better...... still 🙁

But CCLCM, I love you still.

Can anyone tell me what the real cost of living is like at case? So i know the financial aid allocates around 20 something thousand per year for NON - tuition expenses...but ive heard that they tend to overestimate...are there any students or other knowledgable people who can tell me approx how much people actually spend and/or have to borrow for non-tuition expenses?

Of note, each year, about 40-44 are accepted to fill a class of 32 for the CT program. If you did not get a call for the first 16, your application will be pooled for the next 16. The second group of 16 should hear after 2/24/15.

Thank you! That's good info to know!! Does that mean that all of the calls for the first 16 have gone out?

Not yet. Calls are made to your research PIs prior to getting the acceptance call. Your PIs may not have returned the call to CCLCM. So, the first 16 may not get the acceptance call until after 1/1/2015.

@adcom101, does that mean that all the first 16 calls have been made? Are other applicants updated before the end of February? Sorry. . .you have answered the first part of this question!

Hello Everyone! Is Case receptive to pre-interview updates? If so, is it by email? Thank You

There are only two rounds of aceptance calls. The second round will be made after 2/24/15. For example, if you were ranked #17 in the first round (or assumed you were not rejected), your application will be reranked with the next pool of applicants. After the first 32 are accepted, you will be told that you were waitlisted or rejected. Assuming that 40-44 are accepted to CT, the top 8-12 of the waitlist will likely get accepted.

Thanks, @adcom101 . If waitlisted, will we be told our rank at any point?

Someone PMd me this info in response to an earlier question - and didn't mind if it was shared (they want to remain anonymous) for the benefit of everyone.

Because I'm not a student at Case or CCLCM, I don't have any specifics on how much students there borrow, but I can tell you about my living situation and the cost for me and my friends in the area.

I have a very nice duplex - like new carpet/paint, free snow removal and parking, in-unit laundry nice - with 3 people upstairs and 3 people downstairs. We each pay about $350 a month for rent, plus electricity, gas, and internet - all totaling less than $400 a month. Our place is really a steal, but most of my friends in my neighborhood pay well below $500 a month for rent. I'm sure it's a little more expensive to be nearer to Case/downtown/some of the "cooler" neighborhoods, but obviously, the cost of living can be VERY affordable.

I live a little further out on the east side from Case, about 10-15 minutes away in the Heights (Cleveland Heights, University Heights, Shaker Heights) area. The neighborhood I live in is mostly students from another university nearby (not Case) with a few lower-income families as well, but it's very safe - most women are comfortable walking or running alone, even after dark. There are a few restaurants and bars within a 5-10 minute walk with some young professional-type neighborhoods with really cool local bars/restaurants within a 10 minute drive. You don't have to get on any highways/go through major traffic to get to Case and/or the Clinic.

I am not certain if you are told where you are ranked on the waitlist. Sorry, I can't help you there with that question. Perhaps someone from last year who matriculated to the CT program from the waitlist can help with this question.

@soccerkd do you know if Dr. Franco still has calls to make? From what @adcom101 is saying it sounds like they're all finished, but I'm just confused because at my interview day they told us we would get a yes/no/waitlist by "the holidays," but unless you're one of the first 16 acceptances is that not the case?

I believe you are misquoting me. Please see my comment earlier -- Post #923.

I guess what I meant is, is the waiting for PIs to return calls the only thing holding acceptance calls up? So if your PI has not yet been contacted, you won't be hearing any news this round?

If you are in the top 16 and contact has been made with your PI, you will get an acceptance call this round. PIs may have been on a holiday break so they may not have contacted CCLCM. That is why I said some of the top 16 may not hear until after January 1. If you are ranked > 17, AND you are not flat out rejected, you will be re-ranked for the second round of calls (on or about after 2/24/15). Of note, candidates interviewed before December 10 were ranked in the first round. If you are not in the top 16 acceptance, don't lose hope. Hang in there and stay positive.

A bit late, but got an interview invite to CCLCM yesterday! OOS LizzyM 72-75, completed 8/4, pre-interview hold 9/30.
Didn't expect it at all after the UT rejection and long hold. It's an honor on its own to be interviewing at such an amazing program! :soexcited:

No. If you were not ranked, which means that your application was rejected, you will hear sooner than later but definitely well before 2/24/15. Check the portal to see if your application is still open/active. So, no news is good news for now for CT... meaning that you were just not ranked in the top 16. Therefore, your application is still active and will be re-ranked #17-32 after 2/24/15. I suspect that they will put 10-15 on a ranked waitlist (high waitlist vs low waitlist).

Ugh, missed the cutoff date for being in the first group by a couple days. Well, consolation prize for those not in the top 16 - you get to wait (i.e. neurotically checking phone for CLE area codes) with me for a couple more months!

Not sure if all the calls are made or not. I'm out of town for the holidays. Status updates usually come a few days/weeks after all the phone calls are finished, so you should hear about that in the near future.

No, you will not be told your rank on a waitlist for CCLCM. Decisions for whom to call off the waitlist (after February) are made by Dean Franco with input from the committee, and take into account many factors.

Rejected yesterday from CT after being on hold since 11/12. I was really hoping to somehow come out on the positive side of that decision. But it is what it is. 🙁

just n = 1 but my portal changed on 12/23 and I don't think my research PI received a call from CCLCM before I got the call because he was genuinely surprised (could be faking though)

hi everybody, can someoen name some key distinguishing factors in case that make it unique compared to other med schools?

I am on a pre-interview HOLD for the UT. Anyone else in the same situation? How can I nudge myself off of it haha?

My friend said that during his interview day what struck him most was the amount of free time students have out of class to do whatever they want. That, and the immense amounts of healthcare institutions in cleveland all for Case students.

When you are on pre-interview hold does it show up on the portal or do they send you an email?

I got an email a while back.

Anyone know how long Case's interview season lasts?

Does anyone know when the next committee meeting will be? (for UT)

Has anyone that interviewed in early December heard from the CWRU UT admissions? I'm dying over here checking snail mail and my email every 15 minutes. Does UT admissions call you?

No, they send emails. Best of luck! During the last round of admissions, a few people got acceptance emails earlier in the morning and everyone else got acceptance emails in the afternoon, so don't panic if some people post and you haven't heard anything yet! I think they're pretty good about notifying you of a "hold" status (the alternative to being accepted) within a timely fashion, so no news doesn't mean bad news necessarily.

Question for folks post-interview: did you all send updates? I have a couple of updates that I think would be relevant, but I wasn't sure (apologies in advance if it's been answered before).

Yes I sent in an update letter as well 🙂
