2014-2015 Case Western Reserve University Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Anybody knows if there have been acceptances from the alternate list for CCLCM so far? I saw from last year's thread that they made some calls before the final decision deadline.

Not that I've heard of... I would love to know how many people are on the alternate list! And how many of the 32 have turned CCLCM down. Seems like the waiting will never end haha

Yeah, I am normally very patient but this silence is killing me lol

As I have stated before, about 40-44 will be offered to fill a class of 32. This year, 2-3 have already withdrawn their acceptance. There were about 6-7 students from the waitlist who attended Second Look Visit last month. Good luck to all those still waiting for CCLCM.

You can access your award via the CWRU Financial Aid page (link available through iApply's link to Financial Aid Application). At the top of this website you will see an "Awards by Term" tab and an "Accept Your Awards" tab - if you don't have these, it may mean they have yet to assign your aid package.
Hi! I still don't see anything. Are the awards tabs you see at "https://iapply.case.edu/finaid.aspx"? Or at "https://myfinancialaid.case.edu/NetPartnerStudent/PgApplication.aspx"? Just want to make sure I'm looking at the right place. Thank you!

I think not all financial aid awards have been released. I haven't gotten any info either.

I was in second look (wwhich was very impressive btw) and I believe they said All the financial aid packages should be ready by this coming Friday. Also that if your package from a school you're waiting for hasn't come out yet, contact the admissions office and just let them know. They May allow you to wait for sometime beyond the April 30 deadline.

Were only those at the top of the waitlists invited to second look? I'm high hold/on the waitlist.

Have offers been made to the 2-3 people to fill those gaps or will more offers only be made after April 30?

:-/

I'm not sure how many from the wait list were invited but I understand 6-7 who came for 2nd look were there. I don't know how many have been accepted from the wait list so far.

Thanks for the info! Can you please clarify your last sentence about being able to wait after April 30?

Sure.
I believe during a presentation that Mr. Essman was giving, he pointed out that the admissions committee understands that this is a huge decision financially and that some schools may not release their financial aid packages early on because the April 30 deadline (as opposed to May 15) is kind of a new thing. He said that if you find yourself still waiting for a package that hasn't arrived as the deadline approaches, just communicate to them and let them know exactly that -- they would try to work with you then.

Can any current students comment on the usefulness of the lectures? I understand that they are not mandatory and are not recorded. Do lectures supplement topics discussed during IQ sessions? I am slightly concerned that IQ sessions require students to perform research on topics with little overall guidance. Also, there seems to be very little overall class meeting time (20 hours a week), which can have its benefits such as more time to pursue other interests, but I am wondering whether students feel well prepared for board exams?

I apologize if these questions have been asked before. Thank you for the help!

I withdrew from UT yesterday.... Hard decision to make, since I loved Case very much. Congratulations to everyone who will matriculate there, and good luck to all still waiting!
Had to be a tough choice. It sounds as if California loves you--and perhaps, if CCLCM wakes up, you will reconsider Cleveland?

I don't think so actually..... Maybe? But I loved UCLA so much.
Aww. . .our loss! Gotta envy LA, though, for getting you! And, of course, sunflowers do thrive in the sun! 😊 Congratulations to you--outstanding choices!

I had such a great visit at Case but will be withdrawing from UT as well. Hope my spot goes to one of you guys on the waiting list!
Good luck to you, @harvst. Maybe residency at Cleveland Clinic. . . .?

Has anyone on the alternate list sent an update directly to Mr. Essman recently and received a response? I sent one last week and did not get any confirmation of receipt.

It pretty much broke my heart, but I withdrew from UT yesterday. It was a combined decision with my husband, and it came down to finances. Good luck to everyone!

@sahmoc, here is a sincere wish that the broken heart is soon healed and that your not-quite-top-choice school wins over that fully healed heart. 😍 (I am a fellow sufferer, so not just making nice noises!)

Thank you so much! I am sure I will be perfectly happy at my current choice as well. It's just that my family is much closer to Case, and it has been six years since I have lived near them. But with the money I'm saving I could fly them out to see me whenever I want. I wish you the best of luck with your decision as well!

I got my financial aid package as well. It's really so sad--I was hoping that, as a person whose family is below the poverty line, I would get close to the average indebtedness published on MSAR. But it will be close to $100k more! Heartbroken, really liked the UT, but now hope one of my waiting lists pans out.
@agilevin, all reports are that Case is. . .ahem. . .stingy with the bucks. If you really like the school, it might be worthwhile to ask if another avenue of funding is available. (A nice way of saying that you really need more money.) It is fairly inexpensive to live in Cleveland, but your description of circumstances sounds as if it might be worthwhile to have those figures checked. Mistakes are probably rare, but they must occur. I hope you are heard.

@sahmoc, I know. I have family here as well. I like your perspective, though, and will keep it in mind!

Last week was also second look, so it may have gotten buried. Try again!

Finally got my financial aid information. Man, CWRU really does not give the best offers. I even was lucky enough to get a pretty decent merit scholarship here, but even with that Case would still be much more expensive than some other options I have. I will most likely be withdrawing, which breaks my heart. I really liked CWRU a lot.

Did anyone here get a financial aid package that includes any need-based grant money (not loans)?

No, no, go ahead and continue being bitter. It was a dismal aid package (20k need-based aid, 60k unsubsidized loans) compared to what I received from other schools, especially when you factor in the 80k COA!

Ok. I'm still bitter, haha...man...

If Case wants to build the strongest class possible, they need to put money behind it. They're going to lose great students to other programs that have better aid and/or lower cost of attendance.

I also wonder WHY cases financial aid is so low + tuition so high. This tells me the institution is maybe hurting for cash?? Not the best sign.

Ouch, that financial aid really hurts- almost nothing in the way of need-based grants, and my EFC is almost $30,000 for some reason despite not having a job/savings. When I called to ask why, they said it can't be changed since it depends on parental income. Does anyone else have the same issue?

I've been watching this thread but created an account to reply since you guys have started talking about financial aid.
Am I crazy or is $87k an insanely high COA estimate?! $57k alone for tuition, ~$10k for rent...that's $268k of debt, without counting interest.

I really loved this school and I was so excited to get accepted but the numbers are making me so queasy now.

Same situation here. I'm married and my wife and I are supporting ourselves, but just based on my parents finances the EFC is over 30k. My parents and I never could, even if we wanted, contribute that much. I don't know how they justify that EFC, my parents don't have that much cash to burn. They are also just offering 20k of federal of unsubsidized loans. Any additional money I would have to borrow through the additional, higher interest loans like the graduate plus.

@daenschl, I posted an inquiry for advice on choosing and read through several more. Most suggestions were to take the money and run if other offers are from good schools, even if those are not as highly ranked. A lot of people are complaining about the lack of financial aid at Case--it really does seem to be out of step with comparable schools.

Thanks for that reply. I have some great offers (financially) from other, good schools, albeit not as highly ranked as CWRU. I will most likely go with one of those. Either way, I have to decide in the next 4 days.
Good luck to you!

And back atcha! (I mistrust those rankings. . .)

Recently accepted off waitlist for CT. Difficult decisions lie ahead, but I am very blessed to have been given this opportunity 🙂

Accepted off the waitlist for CT yesterday. SOOOO EXCITED!!! No question I will be matriculating at CCLCM :soexcited:

Congratulations to both of you! What great news. I hope more of us get the same sort of news soon!

Congratulations! Come see me in Cleveland. I know the people who are M2 and M3, and won't be leaving town before late July.

Just withdrew from UT. Actually sending that email was really hard; I loved Case. It didn't help that the second I sent that email, another email from Case arrived welcoming me into the class of 2019 and congratulating me on the smart choice I made... Unintentional guilt trip! Anyway, goodbye Case, it was a pleasure.
Good luck to all of you!
