2014-2015 Dartmouth University Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I think they should release more decisions around the end of their interview season. We could theoretically hear back anytime between now and April, depending on how our application was scored by the committee.

EDIT: someone posted this earlier, however, I'm not sure if this is currently the process they are using to decide on candidates. http://geiselmed.dartmouth.edu/faculty/pdf/admissions_committee_charge.pdf

great thanks for the info! Do they stop interviewing around March?

Ah! I have my fingers crossed for an interview as well. I hope Dartmouth shows me some love. Though I was complete much later... first of October.

I have several friends at Geisel, so my "info" is based solely on what they have told me. They interviewed last year through at least the first week of March. Decisions are agonizingly slow. . .some acceptances come very late in the "season." (One of my friends was finally accepted at the end of March!) The reputation is that the school is cautious about offering admission (in other words, agonizingly slow!)

You're welcome!

I'm not entirely sure, but I think they are interviewing until at least March. They stressed that they were stingy on giving acceptances early in the season so that later interviewees would have an equal chance.

Congrats! Complete date?
My file was finally complete August 11. Like others, though, I think that time that the file is complete does not matter so much. Geisel takes a distinctive approach to the interview process, distributing the first look at applications in what seems to be an idiosyncratic way, with the same group of reviewers looking at applicants from "their own group" of schools. As I understand it (which is minimally!), the point is to compare oranges only with other oranges and apples only with fellow apples.

Congrats! Thanks for your good humored postings! You did well! If you don't mind, it will be great if you can share completion date and stats? Good luck!
Oh, stats. My LizzyM seems to be in the low 70s. My friends tell me, though, that scores (while they certainly matter) are not the only determinant. Applicants who attended Dartmouth as undergrads apparently get "courtesy interviews," although they have no greater chance of being accepted. (In fact, because many Dartmouth pre-med courses are taught by folks from the med school, alums may have a LOWER chance if their performance in those courses was less than stellar!) Also (and this is hearsay as well), knowledge of healthcare policy seems to be regarded quite favorably. Caution: I could not vouch for the veracity of the info I'm passing along!

As for good humor. . .I have always liked that ancient Charlie Chaplin song: "Smile though your heart is aching / Smile even though it's breaking / . . . Although a tear may be ever so near / That's the time you must keep on trying / Smile, what's the use of crying?" Steady on, stiff upper lip, all that rot. . . :pompous:

Thanks! (nice quote 🙂

I'm a current second year and a Dartmouth alum. It is not true that we all get courtesy interviews. I've known a few pre-meds from undergrad who were denied pre-interview.

Also guys, if you do get an II, please don't hesitate to reach out to students who offer to host. You aren't promised a free place to stay, but it doesn't hurt to check with as many as you can. I try to host at least once a week but I haven't had any prospective students stay with me for around 6 weeks.

Did you send an update pre ii? I was complete around the same time as you but still have heard nothing. Wondering if I should send an update?

Thank you for the info, @MalinaRana. I'm another "with the granite of New Hampshire in [my] muscles and [my] brain." (Gotta love that hilarious image of rock-headed alums!) If you had anything to do with Vandana or Milan, we may have met!

Just got the rejection letter pre-interview. Good luck to those still in the running and those who have interviewed.

Im sorry to hear that, by email or snail mail?
Thanks guys.. Complete July 15th. I was surprised I even made it this far. I guess it was a long shot but yes I got the rejection via email. I really haven't seen many schools that use snail mail anymore

FYI for anyone else who is stalking the Geisel admissions committee: Per Joan (the nicest woman in the world) the committee is meeting tonight
are they meeting to discuss applicants who have already interviewed or will they be deciding to whom to extend interviews as well?

I'm not sure how it works pre-interview, but on interview day we were told that the committee they meet on Thursday nights to discuss those who have already interviewed (so I'm assuming that's what is happening tonight)

Sorry, @jungybastard. I also got a rejection (from another school) today. Ouch. Sincerely hope that better news finds its way to you very soon.

II. At last.

Sorry to know jungy. Good luck in your other applications. Also, would it be ok for you to share your stats - and also if you are trad or non-trad applicant? Thanks

Even by hearsay, I don't know anything about the effectiveness of updates or about how welcome they are. Maybe @MalinaRana could offer some advice?

Dang, that Awesome Sauce was yummy! :hungry: Totally undeserved, but gifts reflect more on the giver than on the recipient. Thank you!

No news from last night's meeting?
Btw, has anyone been rejected post-interview?

adding to that, has anyone been waitlisted yet? or do they not dole those out yet...
Based on what they told us during the interview day, it is unlikely to have wait listed applicants yet. They won't know the cut offs until they are close to being done with interviews.

Sure no prob. My stats aren't that impressive. 3.81/28. Graduated undergrad in 2013. second time applicant. Lots and lots of ECs and many publications. Everyone is so nice on this thread. Makes me want to go to this school even more

Thanks for sharing, Jungy. Your grades. ECs, and publications will help - and your background is better than those of many others who have gotten acceptance. I am still waiting for an II, as well. Good luck!

Although it's an easy trip for me to go up and I'd have loved to visit NH, plus I have heard only amazing things about Geisel. But I can't waste an interview spot since I got accepted to a school that'll better serve me for personal reasons. Withdrew just now from Jan 6th interview.

Anyone noticed the official dates for Geisel interviews are " September to April" on their website?

Good for you, @FriendlyFH, and I think it is really great that you withdrew as soon as your choice was clear. That is kind (good karma!!)

soooo for anyone waiting to hear back, here's what happened last cycle.

tl;dr - no way to predict when you'll hear back. I know everyone says that but I guess I just needed to see it for myself.

p.s. I know this is high-level premed intensity, sorry!
p.p.s. If the image is too small let me know

Dude...

If you're bored again, you should discuss some trends, i.e. most interviews after X date = higher % waitlists.

I'm getting all stats nerdy.
