2014-2015 Dartmouth University Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
One more question about the interview...is it frowned upon/a bad move to ask your interviewer whether or not they've read your application?

I had asked this thread earlier and heard that some interviewers look and some dont beforehand...Id just like to know whether or not they have so I don't sound too redundant from what is written on my app if they have already read it.

Thanks

I think it will be obvious whether the interview is open or closed file (I.e. Whether they have read it before or not). Before our interviews, they told us that most interviewers liked to read the applications beforehand, but that one or two in particular didn't.

I don't think it's necessarily bad form, I just don't think it will be necessary. Just my two cents!

Interview invite tonight! Complete 7/27.
I'm heading up from NYC; any suggestions on the easiest (cheapest) way to get there?

Take Dartmouth Coach right to Hanover! It shouldn't be too expensive and the buses are relatively comfortable.

That should work for getting there, but doesn't the interview day end late? (After the last Dartmouth Coach back to NYC)

Yes, looking at the schedule you probably won't be able to catch it for the return trip on the interview day. http://www.dartmouthcoach.com/index.php/schedules.html
It does work for people traveling to Boston, since the last bus leaves at 5 pm and you can be done with the interviews by 4 pm (but might have to skip the tour).

Any accepted students know when second look is? I've still waiting on a decision post interview...but I'm just curious! Thanks!

I've just been invited for an interview; I know this was probably stated somewhere in this thread, but forgive me, does anyone know a decent hotel (relatively good prices) to stay at? I know I saw the Marriott by someone, but are there any others? Thank you. 🙂

Found the Holiday Inn! It was cheaper than I had expected!

Interviewed 9/18... Still no word from them. Anyone else from that month still waiting news ?

I stayed at Six South street hotel which is right in hanover and very nice. I paid $120 for one night but it was a monday night so low rates and called them directly to book it. It is very close and a nice little piece of NH as it is a boutique hotel.

I'm staying at the Residence Inn at a Dartmouth rate of $100 for anyone who is a Marriott fan.

Stayed at the Residence Inn as well for $100 and thought it was nice. Like a little apartment with a separate bedroom. They offer free breakfast and dinner (not the greatest food in the world but it does the job). I bet if need be, you can "name your own price" for <$100 on priceline. Quick drive to the med school and across the road from dartmouth-hitchcock

Congrats! Can you let us know when you were complete and your stats?

Is anyone interviewing here the last week of Jan and wants to go from NYC? We could split costs.

if you look at the table posted a couple of pages ago, it looks like the dump a bunch of decisions all at once in april, so you might be waiting for a while more

Hey, do you mind sharing your stats?

Excuse me if this comes off rude, but why does it matter? People are more than their LizzyM scores and often times--and by this I don't mean you, specifically--students think just because an average LizzyM score seems to be the threshold that if they only cross it or arrive at it than they have a "right" to an interview. This, in my opinion, is the whole problem with sdn and why I often don't post on this site.

My stats are I'm a human being with a background that makes me unique. And apparently, my reviewers thought highly of it and offered me such an honor of an interview.

(Not even applying this cycle, but saw your post)

I think the reason people are asking is because it gives them a frame of reference. They are not saying that you did/did not have a "right" to interview. Rather, they are human beings with backgrounds that also make them unique, but stats are something that they can readily compare themselves to. It's not that everyone isn't just a sum of their Lizzy M scores, it is that the med schools themselves often screen out applicants that don't make the "cut". People would likely only ask if they hadn't received an interview invite themselves, so really they are asking for a bit of hope. Premeds love to compare themselves to others (I myself am no exception), so it's a relatively natural question.

Should that culture change? Perhaps. Are humans more than their stats? Certainly. But in the context of sdn, as you can't and probably shouldn't convey every aspect of your background, it is perfectly natural to want to see stats. Of course, you are under no obligation to give them; that is your prerogative.

I do not disagree with you. If stats were everything I would not have had any other interview invites outside of my state school. I have had a unique background, experiences, and many challenges that make me appreciate people, medicine, and the world around me... I also do not think I have asked that question before ever. It is just that it is late in the season for interview invites, and I was interested to know where you (or anyone else who might get another invite) fall on the spectrum. I do not need to know. Asking and knowing just satisfies my impatience and dislike of this almost year long waiting process.

Don't be a hypocrite - you asked what someone's stats were on the SUNY Buffalo thread. If only Dartmouth could see your comments on SDN... I can glean what kind of application you have.

@BengaliBrat you are hilarious 🙂 I was actually just reading an article earlier today about the benefits of taking cold showers... hmmm, might not be a bad idea to begin training!
@chachi19 Sorry for being super off topic but I love your username. I call my mom Chachi and when I saw your post I loved it lol

Haha! I don't mind 🙂 it was a childhood nickname given to me by my aunt because it's phonetically similar to my own first name... and plus the original Chachi is just amazing. I love it 😀

Off topic isn't necessarily a bad thing currently.

Maybe it's already been asked and answered but what are the roads like in the winter (snow wise)? Are they pretty good about clearing them? It seemed pretty hilly when i was driving about in Vermont/New Hamshire. Will chains be necessary?

1) If you look at previous threads many SDN members told me I wouldn't even get an interview, let alone be accepted.
Contrary to their opinions not only have I been offered over 7 interviews, but I've been accepted to 3 schools.

2) I don't doubt that all of these people are unique and amazing. However, I feel that they are under an illusion that SDN is right "most of the time". I would argue the contrary. These are "premeds" who have very little experience in sorting applications. They only know a small subsection based on hear say with very little verifiable facts.

My point in addressing this issue was to give "hope" to other premeds. To not give up and do not listen to another member on your chances. Make decisions that are right for you and reach for it, even if you think it is a reach.

The fact that you went in my past to see what I have and have not said shows you need a hobby. Respectfully, you do not know why I asked for the stats. SUNY at Buffalo is a racist institution that accepts URMs at a rate of 2.5% per year. They sit there and pretend to utilize a "holistic review" yet URMs represent 39 out of 607 students in all 4 years.

As someone who wrote a complaint to the LCME, DOJ, and DOE, I used a bunch of information to prove my point with regards to SUNY at Buffalo. Which by the way, the LCME did indeed cite SUNY at Buffalo for their "lack of diversity".

Furthermore, people can grow. So what I may have felt back then may not be true today. I would like you take a look at the comment you made regarding "Dartmouth" and realize how petty and how much of a hater you really are; I advise you to grow up.

Just pointing this out, but you complained that I didn't look at your previous threads, and then you insulted someone who did ( @blueskies3838 ). You should try to stay consistent.

But in answer to your point, I agree, I think people shouldn't tell you whether you will or will not get in. However, I think it is important to stay realistic, especially before you apply to construct the best school list considering both the tangibles and intangibles. Obviously in your case, it all worked out, so congratulations! But for many, and this happens all too often, they don't get in. Part of why this happens is because they overreached, because they weren't given a dose of realism. Many members on sdn are very experienced with regards to this, (including members of adcoms like @Goro , @LizzyM and @hushcom who have all helped me out in just seeing their posts) so they probably were just trying to warn you to be careful.

As to whether sdn is right, that is something I don't know yet, especially considering I haven't gotten into Medical School (yet). And finally, they weren't necessarily giving up by seeing your stats, they were just curious.

But we should both get off this thread, as this is very much not about Dartmouth at all anymore. If you would like to continue the debate, feel free to send me a PM or start up another forum.

hey if you like diversity you'll REALLY like new hampshire

So can someone try to break down this post-interview process. It seems like people are only outright accepted about a month after their interview...From there, I'm kind of lost. Do you get told you are waitlisted or is there no update until this "second look" in April? Would appreciate some clarification and where your chances stand before and after this second look.

Sorry if this is confusing. Appreciate any response.

From what i gathered (which could be totally wrong) is that 1/3 of the class are accepted 4-6 weeks post interview. The other 2/3 of the class are accepted in the spring after interviews have finished at which time the wait list is formalized and students are notified.

Okay, thanks. That makes sense for the most part.

So essentially the only two ways to be outright accepted are 1) 4-6 weeks post-interview OR 2) In mid-April before/when they finalize the waitlist.

And I guess lastly (this might be hard to answer) but does anyone know what the movement is like off the waitlist?

Thanks

They accept only a few people 4-6 weeks post-interview, especially when it's earlier in the interview season. I think they accept more people as the end of the season approaches, but that doesn't mean only in mid April. From looking over the prior threads and a chart posted earlier in this year, it looked like a few more people were notified of their status in February and March than earlier in the season. I know this doesn't help clarify much or make the waiting any easier, but hopefully we'll be hearing some good news in the next few weeks.

I've posted this a few times before and you may have already read it, but it gleans a little more insight on Geisel's admissions process:

I'm not sure how long you've been waiting to hear back, but I know hard it is to wait, especially if this is your top choice

Thanks. Yeah, I had a read through that document earlier...it was insightful but I was kinda looking for some more informal info, so thanks.

And it hasn't been that long, but yeah, the wait is tough...particularly when you can essentially find out on any given day between now and the next three months (and that's even before post-waitlist acceptances start come around)

The committee meets every other Thursday, so you can expect interesting news on Thursday/Fridays, at least until they do the big release in March/April. Again, nothings is guaranteed, but at least I have managed to convince myself not to worry on other days of the week. 😉

Ha, that does help a bit...thanks!

Had my interview here on 10/2... No word yet. Anyone else have a similar experience?

Edit: I ask because on their site it says if I was placed on the waitlist, they would notify me... It's been almost 4 months, shouldn't I have heard something?

Interviewed a few weeks before you and still nothing for me. The general consensus seems to be Dartmouth makes many of their decisions in the spring, regardless of interview date.
