2014-2015 Dartmouth University Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
So they plan to drag it out during april, when they have already ranked all of us and determined what "category" will fall into? What are they waiting for? I really don't feel like that is very humane at all. This is they only school that I am waiting to hear back from, and I am holding off on sending a Letter of Intent to on school because, if waitlisted at Dartmouth, I'd rather send a letter of intent there...

I totally feel you on the waiting being miserable but I would probably go ahead and send the LOI to the other school while you wait to hear from Geisel. Couldn't hurt

As far as I know... they don't rank candidates for the waitlist, so I don't know what the process is like for accepting students before the waitlist is made. Also, it really does make sense from their perspective -- they're not going to send out so many acceptances in the case that all students actually matriculate, that would be in poor taste. They're probably waiting to see what the accepted students do after second-look, and on April 30th. I wholeheartedly feel that none of this is done because they're trying to drag it out, but because they're doing what they need to do to be fair and be appropriate to avoid a disaster later. Most of the waiting I feel has come from accepted students who are still holding multiple acceptances!

I also feel like dartmouth is the school that leaves its students hanging without a decision the longest. There has been time for them to let us know where we sit. I understand they might not accept anyone right now, but leaving us with absolutely no actual news for months makes this school in my opinion the worst in communicating with its students that I have applied to.

But they repeatedly say that they want to evaluate all candidates equally, so those who interview on the last day still have a valid shot at acceptance, so even if they did rank us, we would always be in flux. Though I didn't interview that late, I appreciate the sentiment, and I understand the anxiety of not having a decision. I'm also still waiting on another school too that will likely let us know by April 30th, so it's not just Dartmouth that does this. I'm sorry though that you guys are frustrated!

Certainly my opinion, I have applied to other schools with similar philosophies, but also been given information after the interview process. I am not frustrated that they are waiting, perhaps that is the better process. I am more frustrated about no information after initial decisions (some people being accepted relatively directly after interviews) and about their process. It is respectable if you do not feel the same, but I also feel I have the right to be frustrated, as I have applied to other schools and have been rejected/placed on a wait list-deferred until later list. I respect that schools let me know where I was without leaving me to guess for 5 months.

It's just very unsettling for those of us that have waited since september/october/november (I interviewed early sept). I do feel that the de-subjectifying-esque (catch my meaning there?) process of ranking us is fair, but can't they let the people know, who are in the rejection/low waitlist end of the totem poll, where they stand? If I end up being in that bottom half, I'd rather know now. They need to take heed of how other schools navigate this process, like those schools that do that whole High Priority/Low Priority Waitlist thing. IF we are HPWL, then we know theres a chance we can get in, and can sleep easier at night. Those that are on the lower end of the spectrum can put their thoughts elsewhere and have some peace of mind.

Sure they have a small class size, but that doesn't mean they get to be mentally abusive to their applicants, who they have met and who have given them money and time... Just my two cents.

I was accepted yesterday. Interviewed the first week of March. And Dartmouth is not the only school that takes a while to release decisions. I interviewed somewhere else back in September and no decision yet. Hopefully you guys hear soon. Good luck!

I absolutely understand what you guys mean, I guess I haven't been waiting as long 🙂

ACCEPTED about 10 minutes ago via e-mail! There were a few individualized forms attached, so they are probably sending acceptances one-by-one. Good luck to all!
What did the individualized forms consist of? Just curious 🙂

Just to clear up any confusion, their last interview date was Thursday 4/2 (confirmed at my interview in late March), the admissions committee meeting for the last two weeks of interviews happened yesterday on 4/9, and we were told that the earliest you may hear back from them is today 4/10, but that acceptances would likely pour over into early next week. At this time they should have everyone interviewed ranked so if you're ranked highly, you'll probably get positive news soon; otherwise you'll most likely be waitlisted and may not hear back until people start dropping their acceptances.
Hopefully the acceptances pour over into today!!

Just called. According to the front desk, no decisions going out today. Definitely this week, but not today.

anybody else think that there won't be any acceptances this week? why wouldn't they send them last friday if their last meeting was on thursday?

They specifically said at my interview day in March that it would likely take until early this week for them to get the acceptances out after the 4/9 meeting.

it sounds like people are being told different things, and that calling and asking the staff is pretty pointless. i'm sure we'll hear soon, but other than that who knows

I just received an email that informed me that I was waitlisted. Not surprised, but maybe there is some hope...

Also received an email regarding waitlist. Does anyone have any estimate of how many people would be on the waitlist?

Waitlist as well. Very curious on how large the pool is....Geisel is my top choice, but my #2 has an early entry program for non-science majors that starts June 14th....hopefully enough movement occurs to squeeze in! I don't want to withdraw and always wonder if those extra 50ish days would have made the difference.

Edit: interviewed early November.

Wait listed now as well, interviewed early March

When I pulled data out of last year's thread, I didn't look for late acceptances.
I have dates for waitlist notifications, withdraws, and acceptances from the waitlist.

Wait listed today as well. Does anyone know if we need to send a response stating that we wish to remain on the wait list ? I know they said they encourage updates, but do we need to reply to their message saying that we still want to be considered?

Last year a waitlist follow up email came 3 days after the last waitlist notifications.

+1 ... dun dun dun
Earlier in this thread someone described how Geisel separates applicants based on background.
Those of us who have not heard yet could be in a different group or just a little farther down the list.
Surely we'll all hear by the end of the week!

waitlisted as well, interviewed in january

by farther down the list do you mean ranked lower?

I don't know. It could be by first letter of our last names, college from which we graduated, or completely random.
I could have used "through" instead of "down". 😛
It does seem like there is a list and it's not necessarily based on the number Geisel admissions gave us in the committee meeting.

I could see it being based on our colleges/regions. they def interview us based on that... the guy that interviewed me interviewed 4 people... all from my school

It may be TOTAL conjecture (so don't take this seriously), but I've heard that too. It may have just been for the initial review of candidates, but I heard they separate based on colleges (AKA the NESCACs, the Ivies, etc). It also may have been total coincidence, but one of my interviewers also interviewed my roomie (from the same college).

isn't there a document that was previously posted in this thread that lays out their exact procedure?

yeah but it doesn't really outright say that they interview us based in groups. just that we are reviewed (initially) in groups by individuals that "specialize" in our universities.

Either way. my heart is POUNDING right now.

Based off of SDN posts in 2013 and 14, they only sent out WL notifications from mid-april onward. but not everyone posts on SDN... so hopefully they will still send out some A notifications?

I assume they're still coming, unless Vain Brother waited after the notification to post.

Thanks Roro. here is the important part...
Final Decisions:
A. Committee scores are used by the Admissions Committee Chair and Admissions
Director in making admissions decisions. The number of students who are offered
admission will be calculated to yield the number of students to be enrolled in the
first year class that year, without exceeding that number. Students from Tier 3
who were not discussed at the full committee, and therefore do not have a
numerical committee score, are only admitted from the wait list by the senior
executive subcommittee. Interview scores are utilized to determine whether a Tier
3 applicant is placed on the wait list.
B. Decisions are issued in writing by the Director of Admission.
C. Acceptances and places on the Waiting List are issued throughout the year.
D. The earliest denials are issued in October and continue throughout the year.
