2014-2015 Dartmouth University Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Did anyone else not hear anything post-interview? Did I dodge the bullet? and going into WL pile?

I don't know whether I'll be rejected or accepted, but I can say: this was one of the best schools I've EVER seen. I interviewed at Oxford this December, but it doesn't come close to the awesomeness of Dartmouth! I guess Americans really do do it better! 🙂 Good luck to you all. Sorry about the stream of rejection emails today. To those who received it if it makes you feel better, this is my third time applying through AMCAS. First two times I only got an interview at Howard...Don't give up 🙂

Don't give up... this is my fourth time applying...🙂

Loved this school, but I had such unusual and uncomfortable interviews probably because I'm such an awkward human being.

Alas, I am expecting a nicely-worded rejection email. Hopefully medical school will teach me how to become more eloquent!

sorry to hear about the rejections! Surprising to see so many here on student doc. from looking at past years threads, no one reported rejections post-interview by this time... only waitlists... and we have no reported waitlists so far...
has anyone out there been waitlisted?

Wait list won't be made for a few weeks I believe--they're still interviewing and wanted to meet as many as possible before assembling the wait list

I have an interview coming up. Can someone please tell me about the interview day/ what to expect/ if there's a difficult interview/ what they focus on (diversity, humanities, etc.)?

I have not heard anything and I interviewed on 10/16/14 so its been 19 weeks!

Hahah, I second this. I, too, typically fall in the awkward person category, but I am hoping it was the interviews more than it was just me being me. Some of the questions were a little difficult to answer thoughtfully on the spot, and fellow interviewees had the same experience. You aren't alone!

The interview day was overall very relaxed. We started off with a general meeting led by Aileen (about the school, curriculum, etc. etc.) and then basically a Q and A session with another admissions guy (I think he's someone important, but I was too nervous to realize who he was.) Then a quick, entertaining financial aid session (gotta love when they try to make those things interesting.) Then we had a tour of the hospital (you'll take a free bus there so don't worry about walking anywhere too far) and lunch (you get a ticket to get whatever in the cafeteria.. best lunch options I've had at an interview yet!) then sometime between 1 and 3 or so you have two 1/2 hour one-on-one interviews (all interview locations are easy to get to and there will be lots of guidance on where to go). The day wraps up with a tour of the medical school campus.

In terms of interview questions, they don't have a bank of questions they require interviewers to ask. Rather, they just let each interviewer ask whatever they want. What is helpful is that there is a binder in the main area of the admissions office with the CV/resume for each interviewer. So at the beginning of the day you'll get a schedule on which can see who you'll interview with and there will be plenty of time during the day to peek at their info in the binder. Interviewers could be MDs, medical students, or other faculty. I think someone even had a librarian!

My interview experience was overall positive in the sense that both of my interviewers were outgoing and friendly. I'm going to be vague because I'm not sure what the rules are on disclosure and whatnot haha. One of my interviews was very relaxed and consisted of "typical" interview questions. My second interview was a bit more "intense" in terms of complexity of questions. Some questions probed me to discuss issues beyond stuff in my application (questions more designed to gauge how I think/explain myself.) Nothing too bad though. Would've been no trouble at all for a quick thinker, but I was nervous and I'm awkward haha.

I would say don't fret whatsoever. It wasn't harder or different than any other interview I had (besides MMIs, of course.) Hopefully that helps a bit!

Thank you so much!! This is really helpful!

I interviewed 9/11 and...nothing.

Next week comes by and I'll have been waiting half a year since I interviewed.

ha.ha.ha.

I interviewed last month. I don't know how you guys did it....I'm basically so nervous and want in this school!

If it makes you feel any better the last committee meeting is the second week in April so we will all know soon!

How do you know this?

I read someone's post earlier that the Committee would actually start meeting every week starting this week, instead of every 2 weeks. Is this true true?

Interviewed 10/9 and haven't heard anything since. Hoping we all hear some good news soon!

So will we be finding out each friday/weekend about who they discussed each thursday? I sure hope they will update weekly instead of holding off the bulk of us until april. Us fall month interviewees have been waiting a very long time...

+1 I wonder why they had to wait this long to reject us if they new from the beginning that they were not going to interview us...
They didn't. They reject people throughout the cycle and still interview through March, so you were still being considered for the last couple weeks of interviews.

according to http://geiselmed.dartmouth.edu/faculty/pdf/admissions_committee_charge.pdf , "Approximately 15-20 candidates are considered at each meeting of the Admissions Committee." Does that refer to the earlier meetings during the year? After reviewing it again, that is what it seems to be, because at this point we have all been ranked (the earlier interviewees)... I just wonder who/what they discuss at the now weekly meetings...

Interviewed here a couple days ago. First off, gorgeous place. I'm in love; which means the inevitable heartbreak will be that much worse haha. They said admissions holds meetings every Thursday and that things will be speeding up soon. For example, they said those who interviewed this week are unlikely to make this Thursday's meeting, but will probably be discussed in next Thursday's meeting. They also gave a decision timeline of 4-6 weeks, which I can only imagine means that those who have been waiting so patiently since the Fall are coming right around the corner.

I submitted my secondary crazy late (like December I think). I'm in an SMP and got slammed with work early on. I didn't get around to submitting it until then. I haven't heard anything either. I've been providing the admissions office with updates every time I get a course grade. I'm wondering if they simply haven't gotten to my application yet or if they are actually considering me (if the latter is true, I'd be soooo happy 🙂). Congratulations to all the acceptances/II.

This is the last school where I am still in the running, although it is pretty late to hope for an interview, miracles are possible.

just thought I would put this short list I compiled of decisions over the last two years. Its possible that I missed some re/acc/WL decisions but it gives a general sense of their process (i.e. no weekend correspondence)

2014
march 7th/10th/13th WL and R
march 17th/24th A
march 25h WL
march 26th A
April 1st/2nd A
April 16th/18th/21st WL

2013
march 6th WL
march 25th A
April 4th/5th WL
April 9th A
April 12th/15th WL

maybe next week we will get some news...

In your time conducting research did you happen to notice when interview invites stopped going out?

I was just looking at last years forum and I saw II's around the 8th, 16th, and 31st of March, so I suppose some II's could still go out 🙂

I got an II yesterday! I can't believe it. 😵 I submitted my secondary in November and I was basically expecting a rejection. I don't think I can make it to the interview though 🙁 I'm out of the country and I don't think I can afford to travel back and out again for interview. If I can't go I hope my spot goes to one of you!

At my interview they said the last meeting would be during the first week of April. If that means the first full week, they might still send our invitations at the end of March, but that seems unlikely.
So hopefully they send you one before then!

Yeah it might be that the IIs were because people had canceled last minute and hey we're trying to fill slots.
