2014-2015 Dartmouth University Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I was waitlisted too, yesterday at Noon. The email comes with an attachment titled "The Waitlist Explained". Here's an excerpt from it...
Historically we have experienced wide variation in Waiting List activity from year to year, but in general we plan to admit additional candidates. In some years the number is small; in others, close to two dozen.

So there is hope, but it definitely seems like the WL is way bigger than the amount of spots that could possibly open up. Let's hope that 200 accepted candidates got offers and amazing financial aid packages from better schools! I interviewed alongside a guy who'd been to 11 interviews and was sitting on at least 3 acceptances back in February. I'm going to assume there are more people like that.

IIRC, even though they typically matriculate with anywhere from 75-85 (give or take), they handed out over 200 acceptances last year. I think chances are good that some people will move out of the WL.

(I WANT TO BELIEVE)

Waitlisted just now... could be worse, although seems like their waitlist must be pretty big!

Does anyone know what "all necessary financial aid documents" means? Just the FAFSA?
Go online and literally Google "Geisel school of medicine financial aid" follow the link to the site and it shows you everything. There's even a checklist. Basically the FAFSA, financial aid application (available online), need access application (also online but you have to create an account first), then you also have to send them signed copies of yours and your parents 2014 tax returns. I think that's it but just check the site

Yeah, the finaid app here is pretty easy to handle

Guys I'm a little confused...do we have to respond to their email saying we are accepting the WL position or is that assumed unless otherwise stated?

I responded to their email saying as much, but I never received a response...

i'm planning on emailing them next week. it's not like there's going to be WL movement for a few weeks anyway

So, a big waitlist it seems.

More post-interview waitlists than rejections?

I believe that I may be the 26th on this sdn thread who has been waitlisted and not chosen to withdraw yet. Lots of us still in suspense, it seems.

Can any accepted students who are at second look this weekend provide any updated info regarding the curriculum change and if it's in schedule? Thanks!

Hey guys! Just curious how long an offer of acceptance off the waitlist is valid after April 30th? I'll be out of the country and contact from May 1st through May 12th so I wanted to let my brother know what to expect if a call or email comes! Thanks and good luck to all!

Per: New AAMC Traffic Rules
"After April 30, each school or program implement school-specific procedures for accepted applicants who, without adequate explanation, continue to hold one or more places at other schools or programs. These procedures:
a. Each school or program should permit applicants:
i. A minimum of 5 business days to respond to an acceptance offer. This may be reduced to a minimum of 2 business days within 30 days of the start of orientation
ii. Submit a statement of intent, a deposit, or both.
b. Should recognize the problems of applicants with multiple acceptance offers, applicants who have not yet received an acceptance offer, and applicants who have not yet been informed about financial aid opportunities at schools to which they have been accepted.
c. Should permit applicants who have been accepted or granted a deferral to remain on other schools' or programs' wait lists and to withdraw if they later receive an acceptance offer from a preferred school or program. "

Take from it what you will, but definitely tell the administration at Dartmouth that you designate your brother as proxy while you are out of the country-- they asked as much in the waitlist email anyway. Where are you going??

So I called the admissions office and it sounds like they don't give you much time to reply to an offer of admission off the waitlist after April 30th. The amount of time they give you depends upon how much movement occurred on the waitlist on that particular wave of acceptances. They do not require a deposit with your reply (maybe that comes a little later). They allow you to designate a proxy to reply on your behalf if you will be out of email contact though. Hope this helps some of you and good luck!

Question: I was wondering how much hands on experience (besides the free clinics) students get at Geisel throughout their four years. I learned of some smaller schools (that lack residents in certain clinical rotations and specialties) that allow students to actually perform some procedures (placing central lines, being first assist in the OR, and doing a lap chole under supervision) as opposed to purely observing during their third and fourth years. Are these types of experiences common or even possible at Geisel?

From speaking with students on interview day, it does seem that they get excellent procedural exposure and experience in the OR, though they did mention that some of the services were not as fruitful as others. Many students take advantage of the ability to rotate at CPMC in the 3rd and 4th years however, but we didn't have the chance to speak with many of those during my day. The one student who was a 4th year we met did all of his rotations at DH, said that he absolutely loved it, and wanted to stay on at DH as a resident 🙂

Hey guys! This is a financial aid question. Do you think there is a way that one can get by under the estimated COA?
Geisel says the COA is 78k but I was hoping to get by with at least 5k less.

Thanks!

Same here. It's crazy how close we're getting...

I know it really is. At Second Look it also seemed like a lot of people had received theirs...so not sure what's going on :O. Hopefully we will get something by tomorrow...

For those accepted students, did you all receive your financial aid package?

I just received an email yesterday from the financial aid assistant saying she sent it to my email address (the one I put down on AMCAS) LAST week...but I never received anything?

It's odd because I've received many emails from Geisel during this application cycle and never had any problems. Did this happen to anybody else?

No, I received it a few weeks ago and it was sent to my AMCAS email. That's strange that you didn't receive it, though. Hope it all works out!

Also, after attending 2nd look, I've officially decided to enroll at Geisel! Have withdrawn all other deposits. Best of luck to everyone on the WL and hopefully we'll all see each other in August!

Did everyone on the waitlist fill out the financial aid forms for geisel?

Does anyone know what the average age of the incoming class usually is?

Hey congrats on your decision! I was just wondering how second look went. What made you decide to attend ?! (If you don't mind my asking)

Waitlisters - anybody get an email this evening about confirming your interest?

Yes! Except now I'm kicking myself that I've been so "head in the books" while studying for my last final that I saw the email 2 hours later... oh well! I'm responding to it right now...

Yes- when I first got the waitlist offer I emailed them confirming my interest, etc. I guess I just say the same thing again??
