2014-2015 Howard University Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
when answering the two questions of "Have you lived (for three years or more) in communities which are medically underserved, or where the majority of the population is economically and/or educationally disadvantaged?" and "After residency, do you plan to practice medicine in an underserved or disadvantaged community?" did you guys just write 1-2 sentences?

I wrote more detailed responses for the other responses but I don't know if I'm approaching these two questions properly.

I basically just said yes, where and a short sentence following… thoughts?

I actually wrote a paragraph or two for each of them dedicated1989. I felt that I wanted to give them an understanding of who I was and what background I had and this was an excellent spot for it.

Does anyone know how to put in Courses and their Labs if they are offered separately?

For those of you whose science lecture and labs were separate classes, are you including the individual grade you received in each or are you just using the lecture grade?

I simple put a front slash between the course/lab and did the same for the grade A/AB, etc. I hope this helps! I noticed that they didn't give specific instructions on this so it's a bit confusing for sure!

The first one I answered with like 4 sentences. The second one I answered with 2 small paragraphs, mostly because this is part of their mission so I wanted to make sure they got that I am interested in working with the underserved/disadvantaged. But I also didn't write too much cuz I didn't want to bore them. Think about how many secondaries they must have to read since they don't screen lol you gotta stand out and get your point across well.

I checked the email again! This is what you should do
"If your science lecture/labs were separate courses, you may enter both course numbers on the same box (for instance, Bio 101, 101L). Also, enter the total number of credit hours (usually 4.0 credits) for both courses. "
For grades, I wouldn't do (/), because that means you repeated the course. I think I'm gonna put a (,)
"If you have repeated a course, you should put both grades in the box
For instance Math 102 3.0 credits D/A-"

So you got a secondary without an MCAT score? Do you mind me asking your other stats?
My cum GPA is pretty high 3.936, sGPA probably 3.96, bio major, disadvantaged applicant
other experiences: study abroad, 100+ shadowing, 200+ clinical volunteering, research conferences, misc work experience

Hey guys, I have a question about the MCAT question on the secondary. I just re-took my MCAT for the second time on August 7th, and im obviously waiting on my score which wont arrive no sooner than a month. So should I answer "yes" to the question asking if Im planning to retake the mcat, given that they dont have the score to my second retake yet?

I think you can say Yes to that, because they will give you an option to add month. Also you should update the MCAT date on AMCAS.

I've tried multiple times calling Howard but no one is picking up.

I'm hoping someone here can help me I have two pre-requisites missing the first is English and the other is half a semester of a chem lab. I noticed in the e-mail it states they will consider you application if you are missing one of your pre-requisite. Since I'm missing two is my application auto rejected?

I'm a Canadian applicant, we are not required to complete an English course since all course work is already in English. The second half of our chemistry is theoretical there is no lab component to it. I have 35+ on the MCAT clearly I think I have good grasp of the English language and PS was 14 so chemistry is not an issue.

Good morning all,
I called Howard today to check into the secondary status, as I had originally received an email that secondaries would go out on August 8, 2014. Per the phone message, at this point, all verified applicants will receive their secondary as of August 15, 2014. I'm a bit perplexed as some look like they have already received their secondaries, but this is the latest info. I was verified on June 23, 2014 and no secondary yet.
I'm verified and added Howard this week. I didn't receive a secondary yet. Hopefully next week!

Unless Howard University is very lenient I doubt they will accept. It seems to be very hard for Canadian students to get into schools in the US. Unfortunately you may have to go back to school to fulfill these requirements. When there are other pre-meds who have them it puts you at a huge disadvantage, even if you have a 35 on your MCAT. They are called pre-reqs for a reason. I am taking post-bacc classes in statistics despite having taken vector calculus, differential equations and using stats to write scientific papers. I feel your pain.

Let us know what they tell you, I'm curious.

Hi all,
I think it's worth calling Howard around the English pre-req. I went to a big ten school and they explicitly allowed students to opt out of any English classes after passing a freshmen exam. I don't expect leniency on any of the science pre-reqs, ie chem lab as mentioned above, but many college students don't take any English classes in college at all. I'll be clarifying with them next week and will post my response. Best of luck!

Most likely you'd just have to take them before matriculating next year. You can have missing pre-reqs. But just in case, since you're Canadian, I would call them to make sure.

Does Howard send emails out like other schools to notify you if you are complete? If so, how soon did it take for you to get one?

I didn't get a complete email even though I am. I don't think they send these. You could also check last years thread to see if anyone got one.

just got the "your app is complete" e-mail.

"Do not send transcripts unless requested. They will be shred."

yes ma'am no transcripts :cyclops:

I just got mine today. ( i received the secondary on aug 11th and submitted the same day)

So it would make sense to start inviting people now

Mine says--complete 8/12/14, Interview: not scheduled yet

Just got a secondary received e-mail.

"...the code "SR" indicates that we are now able to see/review your secondary. A code of "SR" means that both your secondary and letters of recommendation are visible and your application is complete. There will be no other entries on apply.howard website after this designation. However, we assure you that your application is being reviewed."

Where can this "SR" code be found? I'm unable to see it anywhere on the portal.

I don't see it anywhere either...

Hi all-just curious, anyone else with II? Seems odd just one post about it?

Hello guys i'm in some king of dilemma here. I haven't received any invitations to complete Howards secondaries yet, i was though there was some kind of hold on the secondaries because i just completed my MCAT on the 15th. Judging form here secondaries has been sent out over 3 weeks ago...is it necessary to call or send out an email. i would appreciate any responses and how could i contact the admissions office.

When did you submit your application to them/when were you verified? It took about a week after submission for me to receive my secondary.

Call them. I didn't get mine either and when I called, they said they were having some technical difficulties getting the secondary apps to everyone. But they sent it to me while I was on the phone.
