2014-2015 Loma Linda University Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
For those accepted, when did you interview? I interviewed 12/9 and I'm wondering if my group was considered this round.

I interviewed early Nov. It is possible that your group has not been considered this round. From last year's thread, they continued to send out acceptance later on (the next round is the third Thursday of Jan?). Who knows, maybe you will get a call tomorrow. Hope you hear good news as well!

Anyone who turned in their secondary in late October early November hear anything back about II yet? Thanks for the help!
I turned mine in early October and haven't heard anything yet. Anxiously waiting and hoping...

Anyone else still waiting for the acceptance call?? I have a feeling I will be playing the waiting game again until the third Thursday of January 🙁
(I interviewed Nov 25th, btw)

I am still waiting as well... and I interviewed on Nov 25.
Also, has anyone been accepted who wants to do a dual degree program (specifically MD/PhD)?

Can a current student help me out with the homestay, I am not getting responses, and am worried that everyone is just gonna not talk cause of Christmas break...I am thinking about just emailing the whole list by cc.

Don't worry, you aren't alone. Waiting on a call too. Also interviewed Nov 25. I guess we'll hear again on Jan 15-16.

For current students: Anyone live a bit away? I have a house in Fullerton and would be commuting most likely (I don't mind the drive), but just wondering if anyone else does it, and how is it.
Traffic can be a bit annoying. Most people opt to live close by. HOWEVER, since you live in fullerton, you'd be driving to school and back home in the opposite directions of traffic. I know of a second year student who does that exact thing, even with his busy 2nd year schedule.

There definitely are non-christians in my class, but like someone else said on the thread, they really are looking for people who fit their mission statement. It's a unique, but wonderful school in that respect!

I am Adventist, I do not go here, but I have heard through alumni and Pastors that they are all about mission work extending Christs ministry. If that sounds like something that appeals to you, and your scores are competitive, I would apply. They do take something like 25% non-adventist (and they will reject Adventist who have poor scores I know a guy who had a 29 and a 3.1, and they didn't interview him even, so its not the wall of China there for those outside of SDA). Just remember when you go to an Adventist school, things will be a little different, there will be prayer in the classroom, there will be required worships, so if those are things that will annoy you, something to consider.
Not sure where you got your 25% number. That number can vary greatly from year to year. If you apply to Loma Linda - you aren't automatically required to do mission work. A good majority of the class does research. Yes, prayer happens in the classroom, but not always. Yes, there are chapels, (which is my opinion, do not stuff religion down your throat. It's usually singing, and a great speaker.), but look at it this way - it's 1 hour of chapel a week - and it's 1 hour you're not responsible for studying!

So I have attended Loma Linda's Open Houses from 2012 to 2014, so I have seen a lot of what LLU is like. They said that a lot of the people they send secondaries to don't send them back because that is when they find out about what the school is really like. They are heavily missions-minded; they have medical missions during the summer and winter breaks for students to go on. They have huge missions globe dedicated to alumni who went on medical missions. They also have outreach programs to the community that their students participate in. Hopefully if you applying here, you have some of those experiences. Feel free to ask me any other questions you have. I absolutely love this school. :soexcited:
You're not required to go on a mission trip.

Who are you supposed to contact regarding homestay?

We're all on break - so you're unlikely to get a response for a few days.

If worse comes to worse - the Loma Linda Inn (which is a walk to campus kind of motel) is nice, and it's affordable. Make sure you mention that you're coming to interview, and they'll give you a discount. (at least that was the case for me).

Another option would be the Hilton Garden Inn in San Bernardino. It's a nice place, but it's more expensive, and you'll have to drive.

Does anyone know if LLU is receptive to in the area emails/phone calls? I am on the east coast and I have two interviews coming up on the west coast in a 10 day span, and was wondering if it would look bad if I notified them of this. Also, are there any interview dates between January 13th and January 23rd? Thanks!

Everyone in that department is SUPER nice. Who knows, you may get lucky.

How far along are they with the interview process? As a non-SDA do I still have a chance? I hope so! Merry Christmas everyone!

I ended up getting ahold of someone after emailing like 8 people. Thanks for the reply.

Actually now that you mention I am not sure either, but I did see it somewhere ( I want to say website). Either way, it appears the actual number has been higher in recent classes.I am not sure if the comment about required mission trips was directed towards mine, but I never claimed they were required, only that mission work is a focus, and encouraged.

I have always enjoyed chapel when I attended Southern, and I agree that religion is not forced down anyone's throat. But there are a good amount of people who don't want religion to be any part of their education and believe evolution is fact. Those folks almost certainly won't like Loma Linda, it is still very much a religious school with a mission focus. That was the only point I was trying to get across.

Yeah, I may have jumped the gun on your post. Sorry about that.

So I'll just break down the amount of religion in your first year curriculum:

1. You have religion classes. They are required. They are pretty chill. Some of them require papers, others just require attendance. Most of them are Tuesdays/Thursdays at 9am. The nice thing about them is that they are on tuesdays and thursdays; instead of having 4 hrs of lecture to understand & memorize, you only have 3. I have found those days to be incredibly refreshing and necessary to keeping my sanity.

2. You have weekly chapels. You have 2 skips per quarter. If you go to every chapel, and don't skip, you'll be able to stop going to chapel around January of MS2 - freeing up more time for Step 1 review/catching up etc. These chapels occur on Wednesdays - and therefore, is one less lecture you have to worry about learning.

3. Some teachers pray. Many of them don't.

4. There will be a class pastor. Some people get together every day 10-15 minutes before class to pray. It's optional, and it's outside of the lecture hall.

5. We have optional prayer sessions 15 minutes before exams during exam week.

At the end of the day - I never felt like Loma Linda was forcing Adventism down anyone's throat. The only thing one could argue they force down your throat is the lack of caffeine and meat on campus. Everything is caffeine free and vegetarian (unless you know where that one secret vending machine is ;P). (There is a restaurant within walking distance of campus with meat and caffeine.)

But that's what makes Loma Linda special. When they say that their mission is "To Make Man Whole," they truly mean it! It's actually one thing I really truly admire about Loma Linda.

There are a good number of atheists/agnostics in my class, and when i've asked them, they told me that they never felt like it was forced down their throat when I've talked to them. The religion professors @ LLU are rather progressive in their thinking and fully acknowledge that there are multiple religious and non-religious backgrounds in the class. In fact, they encourage students to bring up their beliefs for discussion so that the class, as a whole, can learn more about alternate viewpoints.

Hope this helps.

You still definitely have a chance. They typically interview through April/May.

Interviewed 12/9 and haven't heard anything yet from my favorite school. Likely missed the mid-December acceptance send-out. Guess I'll have to wait until mid-January 🤔😵:bored:

So last year I interviewed there around the same time. I didn't hear anything back until mid April and it was a letter for waitlist. I even emailed the admissions office in March and got no reply. I don't know why on earth they wouldn't let us know immediately but based on your situation it sounds like this may be the case unfortunately . Definitely hate to be a Debbie downer but I couldn't stay silent after seeing this. I hope it turns out better for you than it did for me, good luck!!

Did you receive the invite via email? When are you interviewing?
Yes I received the invite via email. I was instructed to call the office to schedule my interview and was told that the available dates are 2/3 and 2/24. I took 2/3 🙂

Hey guys,
I just joined, and was happy to find this discussion 🙂
Does anyone know why some of us are offered specific dates to interview, and others are asked to give five days they're available?

As one of the people who got the 'five days' I have no idea why, I am SDA, but it seems like others were too and didn't get the five days. I do know that they seem to prefer Tues/Thurs(edit: apparently just not Friday), and weren't real clear about that until I started giving them all Fridays.

I wasn't offered 5 days.

That's interesting, I'm also SDA, but it didn't seem like that would be the reason. I gave a couple Thursdays, but got a Monday. Do any of you who got the five days have a full day with a tour scheduled? I only have the two interviews scheduled. . .

Will PM

When will the next round of acceptances be given out? Did anyone from an Adventist University interview at your school? Very nervous to hear back!!

Should be this Thursday and Friday. Third Thursdays of the month. Patiently waiting...

If it is not too much trouble, I too would like to know the answer to this question as I found it odd.
Basically, the answer for me was that my interview day was different from the typical Loma Linda interview day. There was no group, I had a self-guided tour, no financial aid presentation, etc. The only thing that was scheduled for me was the interview times. That's the cliff notes version.

What the... Seriously? Is this really how your interview day went?

Yeah, believe it or not, I actually really enjoyed it. I got to sit on on 1st and second year classes for like 40 minutes each cause no one was telling me what to do, so I did what I wanted to do, and saw what I thought was important. I consider it one of my best interview days 😉 Now I am thinking I should have just written a reply to the thread. Didn't think people would be so interested.

Just for an FYI for anyone who is flying out to Cali. I flew into San Diego and rented a car to drive in. It wasn't a bad drive and traffic was only moderate. Plus I got a rental car from Fox rentals for $15 a day! If your shuttle costs more than $20 each way, I would ditch it for a rental for sure.
