So it has been over a month since I requested fee waiver for secondary... I have called and e-mailed multiple times already, and they told me that it will be processed soon but I am just worried that such long turn-around period might hurt my chances. Is anyone else in a similar situation?

Maybe they are just letting me know that I should keep checking my mail 🙂... It seems kinda interesting that they use postal mail. I don't know of any other schools that do that.

Same here, I actually called because I had everything submitted on July 8th. They told me they are way backlogged d/t 3000 apps. I suppose they shuffled our apps into a corner. It is frustrating to think I submitted the day after their secondary released and they just haven't done anything with it for 6 weeks.

I can understand it being 'backlogged' now, but I guarantee it wasn't 6 weeks ago...

Graduated from LLU in 2013 with my PhD and my wife graduated with her MD this last spring... Applying to the MD program this year. Let me know if you have questions as I spent 4 years there. Glad to help.

@P2Y6R Thanks for offering to answer questions. I am (obviously) a non-christian, I was raised Hindu, but I am more spiritual than anything. I believe in one higher power. Culturally, however, I am American/Hindu, in that I am pretty secular but follow some Hindu traditions like not eating meat on Tuesdays for example. Do you think I will feel uncomfortable at LLU? I believe in the school's mission, as more people ought to have God in their life and act in accordance with religious principles of compassion, honesty, etc., but I also don't want to be the only guy not praying to Christ in class, you know?

Did you know any non-christians at this school and how did they fare? Also, as an allopathic school, I assume their clinical teaching is the same as any other allopathic school, right?

Current LLU Med student here. I'll give you my experience as a non-SDA student.

It doesn't look like there are any current students answering questions yet, but if they are out there and could give their input it would be much appreciated! Also non-students that are familiar school with the school are welcome to share if they have any ideas. I love a lot of aspects of the school even though I am not an SDA. My specific questions are:

1) Coffee is a fundamental part of my life. From what I read in a post from last year it seems that caffeine is frowned upon (as in it isn't sold on campus) but that you can drink it on campus if you want. However, if I am going to get disapproving looking from people for drinking coffee I think I would have a hard time studying at LL, as trivial as it may be...

Coffee is NOT a problem. In my experience, the majority of student (SDA or not) drink coffee. It's true that you won't find caffeinated drinks for sale on campus but, it is not a big deal. People walk around with Starbucks or coffee mugs, no biggie. There are five Starbucks in a three-mile radius of Loma Linda plus a sprinkling of non-Starbucks.

2) are the a fair number of older/married/with kids students? Is the school family-friendly?

I will admit this is a younger class compared to other medical schools. You can see that just from the stats on average age of incoming freshman. However, it is very supportive of families. There is an auxillary group that supports families and spouses. The Dean honors students who have babies during their time at Loma Linda during a special little ceremony. It's very family-friendly.

3) I love that they have a lot of mission trips. I was a little unclear though as whether or not there is proselytizing on the trips, which I think would make me uncomfortable.

I've never been on a mission trip so I can't speak to this directly but the people that I know who have gone on mission trips go work in other Adventist hospitals around the globe. Yes, it's an Adventist hospital but at the end of the day, they go to practice medicine. There is a sense that in your work, you are sharing Christ's love. There is no pressure to actually preach or ANYTHING like that. If it is anything like the Loma Linda hospital, there is no pressuring at all.

There are non-Christians. The staff and students are very open and encouraging to all faiths. If you were atheist, I would be more worried. But, believing in a higher power and sharing the same values of charity, love of others, self-respect, etc., I think you will be fine. I know there are Muslim students. I don't know any Hindu students personally but there might be! I think you have to ask yourself if *you* will be comfortable more than whether or not others will be comfortable. There is lots of speak about Christ, prayer before exams, required chapel, required "religion" classes (usually more about ethics or general topics than adventist theology), etc. If you're down for that, you could be part of a welcoming, mission-centered community. Definitely don't let your faith discourage you from applying. 🙂

It wasn't an official interview day so I didnt get the standard tour or interview experience, but both of my interviews were relatively conversational, low stress affairs. I could tell that they really just wanted to get to know who I am as a person and what I stand for, without trying to pin me or make me uncomfortable

Absolutely, LLU does not make anyone from other faiths feel uncomfortable. They are super supportive of all of their students-- they are well taken care of. Good luck!

What's up guys, I'm a 4th year med student at LLU. I'm a little slow on the draw this year, been busy gearing up for the match this cycle, but I'm here now if you have any questions about anything LLU!

I'll just throw some stuff in real quick that is always brought up... SDA kiddies get priority in interviews, but not in acceptances. If you have a half way decent MCAT and are SDA, you are pretty much guaranteed an interview. But after that, acceptances are based on merit, such as scores, GPA, EC's, your interview, and whether they feel you are a good fit with their emphasis on service, missions, and whole person care. My current class is about 50% non-SDA, but probably 90% Christian of some sort. So if you are SDA, don't think you are an automatic in, and if not, don't count yourself out!

No caffeine isn't sold on campus, but pretty much everyone drinks it. One of our professor's drinks a can of dr pepper during pretty much every lecture (and can you blame him? that stuff is nectar from heaven!). So yea, don't fear giving up on coffee! Also, meat isn't sold on campus either, but there is plenty to be found in the surrounding area. I prefer In-N-Out, myself. Alcohol is prohibited on campus, they won't come police your private homes, but it's in the lifestyle agreement to abstain, and they enforce it pretty strongly. That's ok with me, I prefer not to drink for other personal reasons too, but that may not fly with some of you, so consider this fair warning.

I've really loved being a student here, I feel like there isn't really any gunner mentality amongst students, everyone is actually quite collaborative. That and the professors here really care about everyone on a personal level, you can email them or do walk in office visits almost all the time, and they'll set aside time for you. Sure there are two or three who are harder to communicate with, but for the most part, they all truly care and want you to succeed!

Got that same email today. I'm secretly worried my friends already found my acceptance letter in the mail and stole it so I'll never found out I got in.

This is just one of the many problems of living in a frat house.

Interview invites go out by email, admissions committee decisions (acceptance, waitlist, rejection) are by postal mail, but they call you for acceptances before an acceptance letter would arrive in the mail.

For everyone wondering about how they send the II...this comes from LLU's website
"Application reviews run from September through June. Any changes to status will be communicated to the applicant through postal mail. These communications include, but are not limited to, invitations to interview and offers of acceptance. Applicants are requested to not contact our office for status checks on applications. Notification will be sent when a change occurs. If no communication has been received by April 1, 2015, please contact the Office of Admissions for further information."

Not sure but I hope they also notify II via email!

I interviewed here last season. Trust me. II are emails. I never got II postal mail.

Also, the email doesn't read from "Loma Linda", it's a woman's name (someone in the admissions office) so don't expect an II email when you see Loma Linda in the title. 😉

For me, it took about a month and a half to get my fee waiver. During that time, I think I sent at least >3 e-mails and made >5 phone calls. If it has been a while since you submitted the request, you should try giving them a call! Good luck 😉
