2014-2015 Medical College of Wisconsin Application Thread

I really hope this Friday's interview isn't for a waitlist spot. I bought a plane ticket and rescheduled another interview with the intention of this interview being for a spot in the class of 2019!
Guess I'll just have to keep my fingers crossed!

Yes I am! As long as I can survive the cold.

I am flying in at 3 and will be taking the 8 pm shuttle. Will anyone else be hanging out at the airport killing time?

The redesigned curriculum seems to be going really well based on student feedback, the staff talked about how to MCW will make you a better physician compared to selling the school as a product, there is clinical experience starting in year one, the pathways (take a look at the website if you havent read about those), and just general feel of a teamwork atmosphere! Those were some of my initial impressions
Are the interviews open or closed file?

both my interviewers flipped through my AMCAS application they had printed out in front of them.. one was a PhD, which was a little intense. He asked several "tell me a time when..." questions. The other was a student who was quiet and a little awkward he would just read my application in silence and think of things to ask me lol....

Hi everyone!

Just got an II a few minutes ago (sort of shocked, actually). Does anyone know if I'm interviewing for wait list at this point? I'm not really sure how that works but I've seen the phrase thrown around the message boards 🙂

Complete back in August, small pooled late August, Lizzy M ~69-72 (for people who are curious)

Thanks!

+1 LizzyM ~72 completed and small pooled about the same time. My email said something like "you may be interviewing for the last few spots in the class or or a spot on the wait list" which makes me thing there are some spots left but very few and they might run out of you take a later date! Just speculation though.

I was small pooled on Nov. 25. Does anyone think I still have a shot at this school? For those who have already interviewed, did they state when the class should be filled by? It seems like they're almost done filling it 🙁

Just withdrew my application. Small pooled 8/18 and no news since. Figured I would have gotten an II if they wanted to give me one. Good luck to everyone else!

Just got placed on alternate listed at the Milwaukee campus. Does anyone know what the list movement is like? I'm OOS.

Also, congrats to all acceptances and good luck to those still in the running!

alternate listed this morning. Pretty bummed.
Congrats to all accepted!

Sorry to hear that. Last year, there were about 200 people on the waitlist, and they accepted 16 off the waitlist from the 1st quartile (source: email they sent to those on the waitlist). Did they say anything about anticipated waitlist movement this year?

Received II last week, said it was an interview for a place on the alternate list. Decided not to take it up.

Small pooled 8/18, LizzieM ~75.

Good luck to everyone!

Was the wait list ranked?

Question for accepted students: did anyone receive their MCW email address?

Is it just me or does it seem like MCW requires a TON of stuff to get financial aid?
what do they require that other schools don't? I haven't started the process yet, hopefully this weekend.

I guess I really haven't looked at others/others haven't really told me what they need besides a FAFSA, but it just seems like a long list.

You won't get that until much, much closer to school starting. The form you are filling out is the same one that current students use. Just enter the e-mail address you currently use and it will be all good.

Awesome, thanks!

Is anybody else having trouble accessing the financial aid page / have a solution to it? It keeps giving me a "page not found" error.

I got this email today:

"The committee has completed its initial review of your application. It has been moved to a pool of applicants who potentially will be invited to interview with us. That pool is still much larger than our interview schedule can accommodate. Candidates are selected from this pool to receive an interview invitation on the basis of strength of credentials and completion date of application. If and when we get to your application in this process we will be happy to email you an invitation. Any further review of your application will occur only if you are interviewed."

Is this the same small pool email that many people got forever ago? People seem to already be interviewing for the alternate list, does anyone know from past threads whether a small pool this late has much of a chance?

Hi all,

Luckily, I have been accepted to both UWSMPH and MCOW. I am having a real hard time choosing between the two schools. Any people in a similar position + any advice/thoughts any of you were willing to share? What criteria should I use to pick between the two schools and is there anything that makes one school "better" than the other? If it matters, I currently am a senior at Madison.

Also, to current students, how generous is MCOW's financial aid?

Thanks!

Do you have to send in your $100 deposit before all of your financial aid stuff? Or will they go ahead and process it without that?

So I got an II today that stated I was invited to interview for the incoming class of 2015. However when I called they specified I would be interviewing for a spot on the wait list. Does anyone know why they do this? And what the chances are of coming off the wait list? Thank you.

Anyone heard anything about curriculum, and if grading has switched over to P/F?

Is...that a good or bad thing?
money? ... good?

Rollerblade asked "What criteria should I use to pick between the two schools " and I say money. Go wherever is cheapest unless for some reason you would be super unhappy at one of the schools (if that's the case you shouldn't even ask where to go).

MCW's finaid is loans loans loans unless you qualify for a little bit of need or you stumble upon a rare merit award. I bet the in-state tuition at Madison would be real nice (assuming WI res since rollerblade attends already).

Oh, I only saw the question when they asked how MCW's finaid was. My EFC is a whopping 0, so I was curious about this myself.

May I ask, where did you get this from?
From earlier on in the thread:

"M1 Here

1) Yes for the incoming class of 2019 it will be P/S (ps: Im jealous as this is a recent change)

2) All lectures are recorded and can be watched at either 2x or 0.5x speed. (so you get your pick of funny sounding voices)

3)first semester you are in the anatomy Lab for 2 days typically for 3-4 hours. Some days you leave earlier depending on how things are going. You do get 24hr access to the lab which comes in handy on exam week before lab practicals. BTW I know I am biased now but we do have one of the better looking labs in the country, and our anatomy professors are some of the coolest professors I have met and incredibly smart. Its 5-6 people to a cadaver.

4) I don't see why not. Being in a bigger city will prob get you a better variety of cases as well during later year clinical. Our patient population is incredibly diverse. PS: you will prob get this a lot but keep an open mind when it comes to selecting a specialty.

5) I think one thing that is unappreciated here or not advertised enough is our learning specialist Jen and the tutoring services. After one visit with Jen she can pretty much tell you more about yourself and depending on the way your brain is wired what is the best way for you to learn. Also there are tutoring sessions here every night ran by the upper classmen who break down the material a bit more as well as pass on all the mnemonics and tricks that helped them most during their years. Oh yeah! One MCW tradition is our practice practical. The anatomy tutoring upperclassmen hold a "practice practical" before the anatomy exams in order to give you an idea about where you are with the material. Also if its your first time doing a practical it gets you comfortable with how its going to be one the real practical but without feeling like crap if you bomb it. It helped me a ton because I was one of the people who had never done a practical before.

Hope everyone has a great interview season!"
