2014-2015 Stanford University Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Just as an FYI -- someone from my school who interviewed the same day as me (10/29) heard back Thursday night.

PS: did anyone else just get an email about a survey?

I did this morning, but the link isn't working for me. It takes me to a 'thank you for completing the survey' screen.

Thursday night? That's quite unusual. Is your friend MSTP?

Ohs nos... congratulations to them!

Yes, got a survey email. First email link didn't work, but got sent another one that did.

Oh boy, with the Christmas holiday coming up, as well as New Years, I don't know if people who interviewed mid-October will hear back any time soon -- if it's good news, that is --...but maybe the Thursday call makes sense, since they might have been backed up due to the storms...

Sigh...I wish not-good news would be available via email/portal and not post-mail. Would save paper and money, too!

Does anyone know if a class of 2019 fb page will be created soon?

I submitted my secondary close to the deadline. Has anyone who applied late heard back?

I wonder how the statistics work. 450 interviewed ?? acceptances 86 matriculate anyone know how to fill it in?

other schools in a similar "tier" told me at an interview they have a %75 yield rate that means that 75% of people they extend acceptances to actually matriculate Using that you can work backwards from 86 to figure out how many (roughly) they accept

you'd think the yield would be higher for such a glorious institution. i'd give any and everything just for an interview. *sigh*

It's probably all the elite applicants with multiple acceptances that have strong ties to the east coast and don't want to move too far?

Is Stanford the only med school that doesn't accept pre-interview updates?

I applied near the end as well and have heard nothing. I was not too hopeful for Stanford anyways, so not sure if I am a good indication of the probability of getting an interview if one applies so late.

Best of luck!

Thanks for your reply. Is there a list of schools that do this somewhere? I did a quick google search but couldn't find any.
Replace with SDN. There you go.

A lot of state schools don't accept updates, i.e. MSU, Oregon, wisconsin, illinois, etc.

drexel, rush, penn state (except for transcripts)...

For those who have already interviewed, what time is the dinner the night before? Also, how soon before your interview day did you get additional details including dinner information and which group number you were in the for the interview day? Thanks!

When I interviewed, dinner the night before was from 7-8pm, and I got the two emails both about a week before my interview.

Just curious, has anyone sent a letter of intent to stanford yet?

I was under the impression that you don't really send letters of intent until after March, i.e. when all acceptances from all schools are out and therefore you truly know that you can commit to one school. (Say for example you write a letter of intent to Stanford but then get into Harvard in early March. You probably wouldn't truthfully want to go to Stanford and play the waitlist game anymore.) This might just be my misconception. Others, please chime in!

Does anyone know if Stanford is receptive to ITA emails? ITA being San Fran (but coming in from the east coast)

Not sure about Stanford. But I know for certain that UCSF doesn't. 🙂

What are the requirements for sending first semester transcripts if you've already been accepted? I couldn't seem to find any information on their website or in their application instructions.

For anyone who has sent post-interview updates, how long did it take to receive a confirmation of receipt from the office/was there one?

Thanks for your reply and perspective.

I can definitely see that happening (for many other people) if they got into other schools they thought they wouldn't. But I was under the impression that letter of intent is basically an end choice. Wouldn't it carry just as much, if not more weight if sent before all news comes out for applicants who would choose one school over all others?

If I recall correctly, you're asked to submit transcripts when you send in your intent to matriculate form -- so you'll only need to send your transcript when you make your final decision.

If someone stayed with a student host, about how long before the interview are we matched up with one? I asked to stay with one next Thursday and I haven't heard anything back.

I'm in the same situation

I got my confirmation email exactly a week prior to the interview date. So maybe wait until Friday. If all things fail, there are pretty decent Airbnb listings that are not too expansive.

Usually students hear about a week before if they're going to stay with a host. Have you heard back yet?

Received WL letter in the mail today. Can any current students give some sort of an approximation of how much Stanford utilizes the waitlist?

Two years ago, there was over-enrollment (admissions said most likely due to their rise in rankings?) and there was no WL movement. Last year, however, they seem to have calibrated accordingly as there was at least some movement. I have no idea how much, but I do personally know at least one person who was accepted after a WL.

Agree with everything Jeggy says. There was a little bit of WL movement, I know a few people in my class who got in off waitlist, though obviously it's not something that people discuss a lot once they're here. With the caveat that I have no inside information, my impression has been that there isn't heavy utilization of the WL, but that a handful are accepted that way.

Anyone know if Stanford has any positive bias towards those who've participated in their summer programs (CAP, SSRP/Amgen, HHMI, etc)? ...I ask, of course, as summer research program deadlines quickly approach 😉

Just out of curiosity, what was the interview like for those of you that interviewed? I've heard Stanford is a little more experimental with their set up.

Noctambulo - I was told (by a Stanford Amgen alum) that the admissions committee for PhD programs in the School of Medicine had a negative bias towards Stanford Amgen alums. This may or not be the case, since I do not know this empirically. However, I strongly recommend choosing a summer program that you are most excited about. It is when you are most excited that you are most successful.

I did SURE at Emory and Amgen at Berkeley and both were amazing experiences.

That's interesting that your friend would say that, and I wonder why that might be. Someone at my school actually participated in the program 2 years ago and said that the directors shared statistics with the cohort showing that >50% of those who completed the program and applied to graduate school at Stanford were accepted. I posted my question wondering if a similar trend was true for the medical school, though I hardly doubt it.
