2014-2015 Tulane University Application Thread

Can any current students comment on the different areas of the city to live in. Like which areas of the city do most students live? Are any parts of more 'quiet' and less urban than others? Do students prefer to live near campus/in a more urban setting?
 
Advice for places to check out in New Orleans/thoughts on the interview day?🙂

I'm actually an admit for the 2015 entry year as well, but I've been in New Orleans for the last two and a half years and attended the med school for an MS program and then worked there for a year after. I live in the midcity/Bayou St. John neighborhood right by city park and the art museum. This area tends to be a little more quiet and peaceful, and has a really cool neighborhood vibe. There are some great nearby bars and restaurants to check out. I personally don't like being in the middle of all of the "action" (i.e., uptown), but in New Orleans nothing is really that far away, so the more active areas still easily accessible. I've lived in my building since I moved here, and when I was a student I really liked being able to escape the uptown/CBD area when I went home. It's still convenient to the school though -- about a 10-minute drive.

I think a lot of the very recent college graduates prefer to live uptown since there's more nightlife going on over there, but midcity seems to be becoming more popular. It's by far the most underrated neighborhood--totally worth checking out! 🙂

Find a bar. Celebrate. The entire interview day is extremely laid back. I get the impression they're more interested in seeing the "real" you than an intimidated-out-of-your-mind version of yourself. If you're not wanting to travel far, Handsome Willy's is the official unofficial hospital bar. This will give you some insight into the culture of the school beyond what the interview shows. If I remember correctly, my interview was done around 3:00 pm, so plenty of time for a few drinks. They also have good food. If you want to venture away from the med school area, I could list tons of places to check out for food, drinks or otherwise. Just let me know. It sort of depends on where you're staying and how much cabbing you want to do. There's also more than food and drinks in the city, but that depends on your interests. It just so happens that those are mine. 🙂
 
congrats and good luck to everyone with the upcoming interviews! i recently interviewed at tulane and had an amazing experience. the interview sessions are really conversations rather than interviews. they are genuinely interested in getting to know you more instead of just grilling you with questions of why you want to be a doctor ( but of course that is part of the conversation). i know this is a medical school interview and you are probably going to be stressed out, just as i was; but don't forget to have fun in new orleans, it is a wonderful city. and i truly believe that me going out the day before my interview actually helped calm down my nerves.

Hey, I'm scheduled for an interview later this month! I'll be there for a few days before the interview, so I was thinking of using airbnb for that time. Has anyone else tried it and what areas would be best to stay in?

PM me if you're looking for someplace cheap. I've got a basic room with its own bathroom for $50 a night, and I'll include a ride to the school on interview day. The downside is that I'm in Upper Bywater and getting to the French Quarter or Frenchman Street will mean a bus, taxi or bike ride, or a longish walk. Or, if you just want to stay for a night or two, use the student host system through the school and you can stay at my house for free.
 
There may, or may not have been. However, I believe that you do need to report it on the primary application, and if not, criminal arrests/convictions will likely come up in the criminal background check that happens once your friend has been accepted/waitlisted.

How good is Tulane at sticking to their "you'll find out within 3 weeks of your interview" claim? Lol

I don't remember that claim ever being made, anywhere. Just be patient. For me it took around 3 weeks. Some heard within two weeks... For others it took 5 weeks! I was in your shoes not too long ago. Just keep yourself busy and distracted - obsessing over it won't make the decision come any quicker!
 
So I am interviewing on 2/27. Anyone here interviewing on that date? I get in early evening of the 25th, wouldn't mind going out on the town if anyone is trying to experience some NOLA night life.
 
Does anyone know the average step 1 scores for Tulane? I know a score is mostly based on personal effort, but it would still be nice to know.
 
I believe this past year it was 230. Previous year was slightly higher at 233 IIRC
 
Step scores every year have been pretty consistently within a few points of the national average. Picmonic, BRS and Pathoma are the same no matter what school you go to.
 
Does anyone know how the merit scholarships (a la Jack Aron and company) work? Is there an application to fill out or do they assign them based on the data they have?
 
Has anyone heard back about financial aid packages? Is there an extra form to fill out or is it all FAFSA based?
 
Has anyone from the 2/2 interview heard anything yet? They said it would take 1-3 weeks to hear back and it has been about a month....

I haven't heard back from 1/26 yet...I was starting to get concerned as well especially since someone from my date DID hear.

Does anybody know if the transcript we have to upload must be an official one? I am assuming so, though it is kind of weird to get official ones and scan it.

It's always nice to complain about the wording of an acceptance [to medical school!] email on a forum where an innumerable quantity of others would sell a kidney of theirs to be in your position. How was the wording of that?

You're right; it was a poor choice of wording. I'm really excited to be accepted to Tulane. Like other pre-meds, I was very anxious when I read the email. Anyway, I hope those who are still waiting hear good news soon.

At least one individual on here received an offer a while ago. Otherwise, the post-acceptance financial aid email indicated March as to when we could check our FA status on Gibson. However, even though Gibson is finally allowing me to log in, the linked status page gives me an error code.

When did you interview? I'm waiting to hear on a 2/23 interview.
