2014-2015 University of Iowa (Carver) Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
We will be hosting a “Get Acquainted Day” for admitted students April 18, so look for more details to come on that soon!

The above i received via email. I had asked over in the second look thread whether this was iowa's second look but no response so i'm guessing no one knew. Take it how you will.

The Pre-M1 Communications site lists April 18th as "Get Acquainted Day", and it's been listed since the site was up earlier this month. I think it's safe to assume that April 18th is the date.

@Overanxious, so nice to hear from you!! Thanks for the info!

any chances we may hear tomorrow the last Tuesday in January, or will we only hear next in March from final pool?

I believe we won't hear anything until March. This is supported by looking back at previous years forums.

They said they would finish up the rolling portion during January and let you know final pool or not: of you haven't been final pooled it's possible

Online my status changed to final pool. Never got an email.
Interviewed December 19th.
OOS. Sure hope I get another look.

Strange. Maybe this just means you've been accepted! You've checked online for the new tab?
I hope so! I've been refreshing constantly, especially today, but nothing yet! Maybe I'll give them a call

Edit; just called. Final pooled, so see you guys in March!

So they just forgot to update your secondary portal?
Yup. Sounds like they were trying to get through a few last decisions before final pooling everyone, and they just didn't make it so they stuck a bunch of peeps in final pool and they are still working on releasing those

My portal is updated! are you guys IS? mind posting your stats? I think most of the spots are for IS

Final pooled for Carver and I've been pretty bummed about that. However, I just got an interview with Rush Medical College in Chicago and I'm so excited!!!!

Good luck! Hope you kill your interview at rush! Final pool at Iowa isn't so bad either, a lot of acceptances come from there so don't give up hope!!!

Thank you! This is my third round applying to medical school and I've worked so hard to improve my application. I only applied to Carver last year since I was in a two year Masters program at the University of Iowa and it stung when Carver rejected me. Just to be invited to interview by an out of state let alone Rush is a huge boost for the moral.

Hang in there Labrine and kill your next interview!

For those accepted, do we have to complete any other financial aid application for Iowa other than the FAFSA?

Yes there is a specific Iowa financial aid form to fill out along with your fafsa

Is it somewhere on the ISIS page? I guess I should call the financial aid office and figure it all out.

There has been a change in the financial aid application process for this coming school year, so that we only have to fill out a FAFSA unless they specifically request a separate form for verification. In previous years everyone has had to fill out both. But it would still be a good idea to call the financial aid office to ensure that this new FAFSA-only thing applies to incoming as well as current students.

They told us on my interview day the following (mostly pertains to IS applicants):

-About 60 IS offers are given before final pool for about 100 spots
-About 200 acceptances (IS) are given in total and most will come from the final pool
-Not really sure how OOS works but they did say that they give ~100 offers for OOS before final pool for the 40 spots knowing that most will choose their in-state school
-So about 2/3 of acceptances seem to come from the final pool for IS if I wrote this all down correctly from the interview day

Their priority is OOS applicants before final pool happens so I wouldn't be too disheartened if you're IS and have been final pooled. It seems to be a good thing!
I have also been final pooled and interviewed on October 15th. Good luck everyone and don't forget to get those updates in! 😀

So if the student body size in the college of medicine is ~600 (http://grad-schools.usnews.rankings...dical-schools/university-of-iowa-carver-04036), then that would lead me to believe that the entering class is ~150 students.

I'm guessing that the ~100 offers to OOS students prior to the final pool will fill the 40 spots mentioned in the quote.

So, unless the University of Iowa admits more than 40 out of 150 (26%) OOS students every year, does this imply that most OOS offers are made prior to the final pool? In other words, if you're OOS and final pooled does that mean that you're rejected?

Honestly, I'm not sure. Maybe someone else can shed some light on this for the OOS people?

Nope not the case. Many OOS are accepted from the final pool. I think many OOS are holding onto iowa waiting to hear about financial aid as that is a big draw for people, so eventually a lot of people will give up there spot if the money isn't right or they choose a different school etc. At the end of the day I believe there usually some movement at least from the OOS waitlist and scholarships are still available for those of you swimming around in the final pool.

Also one fantastic thing about iowa, if you are on the waitlist you will know your exact position and can call to see how far down the list they are. IMO way better than the unordered waitlist with seemingly no rhyme
or reason.

filling out fafsa here, just to be clear we need to include our parent info to be eligible for CCOM grants/scholarships? Does that impact the amount we are eligible for from federal?

The parental information will not affect your eligibility for federal aid (it does for undergrad). The schools use it as a tool to differentiate need for students because otherwise most people would have the same financial info, as most applicants are students and making no money.

There's no Facebook group, is there? I don't recall ever being emailed a link, and I don't see one when I search for it.

Any pre-M1s applying for a Summer Research Fellowship? I have a mentor figured out and just need to write the proposal, but I'm not sure on the deadline. One application online says February 27th but another place says April 1st. Anyone know for sure?

The website for the SRF has all the details you should need. It said for pre M1s accepted before March 1, your research application is due March 6. The dates are different for M1s and the pre-M1s. Have you already emailed Deanna Nielson? If you are unsure I would just ask her directly.

Yeah I emailed Deanna Nielson and got it all figured out. I just turned the entire application in yesterday, thank you though!

The decision tab does say "It is very important that you check your contact information at the Contact Update tab on your secondary and make any changes prior to March 3, 2015." 😉

OH BOY OH BOY OH BOY OH BOY OH BOY *hyperventilates and falls out of chair* *gets back up to refresh email* OH BOY OH BOY OH BOY *repeat process*

I've just been trying to keep myself busy as is (and not check my email while on my hour long drive to and from work each day). I did have a wonderful day tho today. I do some testing for a clinic and I got a huge hug from a patient when their test results came back negative. He was jumping up in the air he was so happy. Reminded me of why I'm putting myself through all this stress and left me with a big smile on my face for the rest of the day. What I would give to be able to do that as a physician every day of my life. Fingers crossed!
