2014-2015 University of Miami (Miller) Application Thread

I could feel the partying nature just from the students at lunch.... but what you mean finances?

There are 150 people in each class and Miami is a big city with all kinds of people. Just because some of the students like to party doesn't mean there aren't students that do other things. In my class and many others there were plenty of people who didn't party or who had different versions of fun. I would not write off UM, because you weren't sure about fitting in with the student body. All in all its a diverse student body and everyone finds their niche.

Edited this out too! Feel free to message/ask what I posted!
I remember reading about what you originally posted in the past, but I heard or read from somewhere it was no longer an issue?

I also saw the post prior to removal. Immediately I noticed the articles were from 3 years ago. Seems like if it were an issue it'd be better-circulated.

Those issues affected employees but not the students/medical education.

I'd say the state of school finances can potentially affect a student significantly. By the way, what's with the censorship here?

how is that even possible

Simply put, the university was centralizing departments throughout the different schools. Many universities go through this transition as an attempt to run more efficiently. For example instead of having certain finance ppl for each department they transitioned to a more centralized core for the whole university...similarly the same thing happened for HR, research... And so on...

The process did not affect the students adversely, because things kept running and the medical education staff didn't change much at that time. To clarify, the medical school still had all their personnel and departments that serve students which is separate from the departments serving the employees...

I'm sure they can in specific situations. In this situation I did not feel the effects as a student. When the cuts were being made, I was employed by the university as I was finishing a research year around that time. Therefore I had many friends employed by the university and was familiar with the situation not just as a student.

I'm not trying to censor anything or be weird or convince people to come to UM. I think it gave me a great education and experience, but I'm human. Like all students I had things I did and didn't like about my med school experience, but the budget cuts and the change financial situation of UM a few years back was not a pro or con IMHO. I just didn't really feel it's effects as a student.

If you want to come to UM I think it has many great things to offer, but where you choose to attend medical school is a personal choice based on your priorities and nobody else's. Best of luck to everyone.

The acceptance letter said we had to give a non-refundable $100 deposit to hold our spot. Where exactly do we make this payment?

You can send to the office of admissions (address on the admissions homepage). You can also hand in at 2nd look if you want to, or just mail in by the deadline. I think the office admissions realizes that it's still early in the cycle, and people interviewing in the earlier half of the cycle will likely have a number of options to weigh, so instead of dealing with the fuss of having to refund deposits to pethey just make it due on the 15th.

I'm chiming in here too. You can ask anyone in my class, I define party animal, lol. That being said, I only come out of hibernation after a midterm or a final to party - when it's been earned. Work hard, play hard. Don't need Ne-yo to tell you that.

I agree. For me it's a head scratcher why people consider others' opinions when making this decision - a school should just feel right, and nobody should have to tell you one way or the other. But, different strokes for different folks.

I would attend a post test house party, but mostly I liked game nights, dinner meet ups, BBQ and hanging out at a bar with friends. I boycotted the whole club scene 😉 everyone finds their place.

Perhaps this is a foreign concept, but some of us like to gather all applicable data before making a life-changing decision. Your initial impression of what 'feels' right can turn out to be totally wrong, especially if negative aspects of the school were swept under the rug.

That being said, I'm sure Miami is a fantastic school, and I'd be honored to be a student there.

Never said anything about 'initial impressions,' and I wasn't attempting to create hostility. It's ok to have different perspectives, just sharing mine - like I said, different strokes for different folks. 🙂

I'm still "currently under review", and I've been complete since 09/08... Do they not look at apps in order? :bored:

Anyone send in updates and receive confirmation of receipt? Sent in mine about 2 weeks ago and haven't heard back. When I called they basically said they probably haven't gotten to me yet. Post interview btw. Hoping they see it before Dec 10th decisions.

No they don't. I remember when I sent my secondary back in August (Still haven't heard anything btw) and some guy who submitted the same day as me received a II the very next day. Some people had to wait months for a II and some people were luckier.

I sent an update about a week after the interview and it took about 2 weeks to receive confirmation.

I just received my secondary bc I submitted my primary for this school super late. Does anyone know if this is already too late to Ben spend $75 to submit the secondary? (Btw, I know the deadline is 1/15, but I was just wondering my chances if I submit this late in the game) thanks!

This may be a bit neurotic, but did anyone get an email back after accepting the offer (sent via email). I was accepted on the 19, but only recently received the acceptance letter in the mail.

Go for it! I submitted on 23 November. It's never too late until it's too late.

I didn't get a response either but I'm not too worried about it.

I received an email response that linked me to a page where I filled in personal info then selected a program/turned down the offer.

Hmm. Do you know how much time elapsed between your email of accepting the offer and receiving the link?

I just called the admissions office saying I responded to the acceptance e-mail but didn't get a response and wanted to make sure there wasn't anything else I needed to do. They said that responding to the e-mail is sufficient to reserve our place in the class and there's not anything else we need to do at this point.

@warrenpeace It sounds like you were accepted to MD & MD/MPH. Maybe this is why you got a link to select a program. I'm MD only and I believe @womanofscience is as well, so that would explain why we didn't get the same link.

Thanks for calling and passing the information along, it's very much appreciated! And yes, MD-only applicant (although the MS in genomic medicine is catching my eye).

I don't think I've seen this question yet but does anybody know when merit scholarships will be offered? I saw in previous threads that the offer came with the acceptance letter. I received the letter last week!

Hey! My interviewer told me that they will meet sometime this month to decide but he didn't mention when the scholarships would go out. I think they're doing it differently this year since no one has mentioned receiving a scholarship.

Hi guys, if you can offer any advice or input, I'll be so grateful!
I have a dilemma. Miller just sent me a secondary application (I know December for secondary is already late in the game, but I applied for this school really late in October). But I'm missing a prereq class so I'm thinking of going back to school to take that one class. The thing is, the class will cost me around $650 bc it's $165/credit and it's a 4-credit class. However, just bc I submit the secondary app for the school and take the class still DOES NOT guarantee me an interview, let alone an acceptance. So what should I do? Should I just take the class and take the chance (I really like this school and its location)? Or should I just forgo it? Thanks!

That's a pretty personal decision to make. As you said, it's late in the game and it would require more effort on your end. The question is whether that's worth it to you.

Yeah, sometimes grad schools will work with you to ensure that your pre-req gets taken care of…sometimes you can take it while you're at grad school sometimes you can take it in a 2.5 week course online as I know some students with anatomy before med school. I'm not sure what Miller's policy is, but I would wait until you know you have an interview at least to think about taking that course.

What is the policy on thank you notes/emails to our interviewer? I forgot to ask on interview day.

Thank you guys! The thing is, Miller does not accept online courses. Also, I cannot wait until an II bc if I am going to register for the Spring semester course (so I can have the course down before matriculation), I need to do it right now.

I am assuming the class is biochem or something... do you need this class for any other schools? Are you interviewing or have offers from any other schools?

If it were me, I wouldn't even submit the secondary. $650, plus having to attend and take the class would suck if you didn't even get an interview. Chances are slim now, and with rolling admissions like miami does the pool just keeps getting bigger and bigger. Personally I would stick with other schools myself.

I am in a similar situation where I am contemplating taking a class I need for a school that I ALREADY INTERVIEWED at haha. I also need a class for another school (ohio state requires anatomy) that I am not taking because I haven't heard anything about an interview yet from them so they are crossed off my list, which is what I would do with miami in your case. However, if it is worth it to take the class then you should definitely go for it! You never know 🙂

Yea, it's biochem 🙁
I was thinking the same thing about whether it's worth it if I may not even get an interview. Two of my other schools require that class but they also still haven't offer me II. And it's already December...

Also depends on your stats and quality of your application.... if you are an amazing applicant then you will have a higher shot. I do know your pain though, as I am taking two classes next semester (including biochem) that I do not need for my degree, but are required by schools I have either been accepted to or interviewed at.

Your situation is also different than mine as schools have had my application for 5 months now so I can assume rejection and not bother with their required classes, while you would be new and perhaps could still get an interview. If we could only just know the future!
