2014-2015 University of Miami (Miller) Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Also depends on your stats and quality of your application.... if you are an amazing applicant then you will have a higher shot. I do know your pain though, as I am taking two classes next semester (including biochem) that I do not need for my degree, but are required by schools I have either been accepted to or interviewed at.

Your situation is also different than mine as schools have had my application for 5 months now so I can assume rejection and not bother with their required classes, while you would be new and perhaps could still get an interview. If we could only just know the future!

Amad01 if you have no interviews this season and those courses are required by several schools, I would continue with them and make sure to do well. In addition, I would start coming up with a plan B on how to strengthen your app and decide what to do next year.

Yea, it's biochem 🙁
I was thinking the same thing about whether it's worth it if I may not even get an interview. Two of my other schools require that class but they also still haven't offer me II. And it's already December...
Biochemistry is a useful class to have in the long run, even if it is not required, to make it smoother in medical school when you are bound to be inundated with material. But it really depends on your schedule.

I already have acceptances at other schools and waiting on another one and interview this week. But it's a tough decision bc I really like this school and bc two of my other schools (no II yet from either of them) also require this class. I know it's useful but it's expensive and time-consuming if I will not even get an II later on for it, whereas most of my other schools do not require it. Also, it's bc it's already so late in the game that I just got the secondary. 🙁 but thanks for everyone's help!

9 interviews 2 acceptances there is no plan B

It is classes like anatomy required by ohio state that I'm not taking because I have been accepted as well as interviewed many other places.

also, I don't believe in plan B's. “There's no reason to have a plan B because it distracts from plan A.” ― Will Smith.

Gotcha. Congrats. I missed that line where it said you had acceptances 😉

Also im a huge fan of that quote... I don't believe in putting effort towards a plan B unless I fail at plan A.

So, I am still really excited about this school...but I have literally heard nothing for months. I was complete in late July and still sitting with the "under review" status. Anyone else in the same boat? Will we still be re-reviewed? Hope someone can chime in here.

I was complete late August and have heard nothing since my file was "complete". I sent in an update a few weeks ago because I had some substantial research published, but I never actually heard back.

I agree with that sentiment. I do have vague backup plans B, C, D, E... but they're not fleshed out. Putting effort into backup plans would take effort away from the med school application process. I didn't even apply to DO schools for that reason. MD or bust.

PS: Tomorrow's the next big acceptance date. Best of luck to everyone!

Hmm I'm supposed to get news tomorrow but my status still says,
"Your applications and interview report will be reviewed by the Admissions Committee at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine.

Decisions are usually made within 4-6 weeks of the interview. You will be notified by cell phone, e-mail and/or standard mail."

anybody else still say this and is expecting to hear tomorrow? Hope they at least got to me for a chance at this round....

yep, expecting news today, but my status is still unchanged. the plot thickens....

N=1 but my status changed to 'final decision' several days before I got the call. It's possible they haven't gotten to your file yet.

Whoops, sorry @amad01 I was also the same way. A final decision came up days before I got the call. Should've clarified!

Well... Looks like I know what I'm doin every 5 mins for the next 6 hours..

welp. that seems to be the trend around their acceptance process. i guess our wait continues until Jan 7th, @amad01

@amad01 when did you interview? i was on the 10th/11th, so was hoping for news today. ah well, no news might be good news in this instance haha.

I was late November... I hope I at least get a wait list email not just hung to dry

from what i've seen, they put up the "final decision" status regardless of acceptance/waitlist. feel your pain, I was early November and still no news. double edged sword here, but not hearing anything might actually be preferential to wait-list (you still have a shot at acceptance since your file hasn't been reviewed yet). i guess we just see what happens haha.

Is anyone interviewing here on Jan 26 and 27 for the MD/MPH program or even just the MD on the 26th? If someone wants to split a hotel stay and/or car rental, that'd be awesome. I'm up to drive and rent a car etc.

I might head down for the weekend before as a mini vacation, but if anyone wants to split stuff for the interview, I'd be all ears.

If any of the folks that have interviewed here have tips on where to stay etc, I'd appreciate those as well! Trying to do this on a quickly dwindling budget, hah.

Thanks!

interviewed nov. 10th/11th- quick tips:

1. Definitely get the car, you'll need it to get to the regional campus

2. Stay as close to the medical center as possible- parking there can be a bit tricky, especially if you haven't been to the medical center before

3. Definitely go the weekend (or at least the Sunday) before- South Beach is awesome! 🙂 If your interview is on a Monday, you even have time for a little beach stroll and Miami exploration afterwards.

Flying from boston, so a weekend of warm weather sounds amazeballs.

Any tips on where to stay? I might try to airbnb or such.

The Spring Hill Suites they recommend is extremely convenient. It's a little pricey, but I thought it was worth it for the night before the interview to be able to wake up, eat breakfast at the hotel, and walk right across the street to the interview. I'd definitely recommend staying somewhere more scenic/affordable before/after if you decide to turn the interview into a mini vacation. That's what I did, and I really enjoyed having time to explore the beaches and other things Miami has to offer.

i would recommend that too. to provide an alternative perspective, I stayed at hotel close to south beach (across the bridge), and while google maps said 15min, it took me a good 45 to get to the school, park and then walk over to the info session (it was also raining the morning of my interview).

waking up and walking across the street to Miller sounds prettttyy nice.

No. At least not today. I noticed about a week ago that it says the following:

"Your applications and interview report will be reviewed a final time by the Admissions Committee at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine.

Decisions are usually made within 4-6 weeks of the interview. You will be notified by cell phone, e-mail and/or standard mail."

I'm not sure what they mean by a "final time". I'm not sure if it's always said this, or if it changed at some point. Do your applications use similar language? Perhaps mine was reviewed and rejected once already. Interviewed early november.

I believe my status was this exact wording before it changed to the "final decision" one. Don't read too much into it since i think that's their generic status, doesn't necessarily mean that they reviewed and rejected you once. I think the final time is referencing the fact that the first scoring was for your interview invite!

Okay, I was thinking that was what they likely meant. Just over-analyzing a bit due to the pending announcement. God, I hope I get an acceptance today. My stress levels will plummet dramatically. Months of not knowing is killer.

I think there is still time for them to update your app and it seems that you are within the timeframe to receive a decision! Although I do remember that last year's thread mentioned that they chose not to release decisions on the Dec date, but waited until Jan!! I hope that does not happen for you and those waiting to hear back!

i.e. no "final time". it seems as though they might be holding off until jan for more acceptances. its all speculation right now haha, let's see what happens at 5pm ET. i'm planning on calling in tomorrow just to see if everything is in order (if I don't get a call/wait list email).

Well ****. It looks like the "final time" may mean something then.

I hope they're not holding off till January cuz then the pool is even bigger and we are compared to more and more applicants ... But I suppose they would accept 40 instead of 20

Who knows. I would expect them to accept at least some people today. Although I'd rather wait until January and get accepted than be waitlisted in December.

Hey everybody, long time lurker, first time poster.

I interviewed late November as well, and in his wrap-up speech the Dean said the next acceptance day was January 10th. Then he double checked on his phone and repeated that date. I remembered that January 10th wasn't even listed as an acceptance day in the hubspring app they gave us ... but I didn't ask him about it.

Not sure if he misspoke, or if that date is accurate, but either way I'm still sitting here refreshing my status and hoping for a phone call 🙂.

weird indeed- the app states that the first acceptance date in Jan is the 7th...

at least we find out the answers to all these questions in ~80min!

We all freaking out for nothing

lol - hopefully he just got the months wrong and we'll all get calls in the next ~30 minutes!

Why do they wait till 5pm anyway? Seems like a lot of work to do at the last minute.
