2014-2015 University of Miami (Miller) Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
The greatest thing I have learned in this application cycle is that Springhil Suites is THE hotel to go for when interviewing:

Free Shuttle from Airport to Hotel
Free Shuttle from Hotel to Interview
Free Shuttle back to Airport

(Penn, Miami, etc.)

I am not associated with them...i promise
This message is brought to you in part by Springhill Suites... 😉

Ok, so after doing some digging in last year's thread (and speaking to other applicants this year) it seems like need based aid is given out in April, but merit scholarships are already being given out.

Good luck everyone - hope we all get full rides!

Does the MD/MPH program give out different scholarships than the MD program?

Haha, I've had the final decision status as well. This is going to be good.

After my craptastic interview here, I'm shooting to get the first post interview rejection!

I interviewed only a few weeks ago, but today I got the status change to "A final decision has been reached"!! Does this actually mean that we will get a decision in next 7 days, or have people had this status and not heard anything for weeks? Because the next decision date isn't for another 3-4 weeks, and that's the date they told us we'd likely hear back. Pretty surprised I got the status change this early.

I'm hoping you get something better! Hoping I move up the alternate list too!

The next decision date is this Wednesday, Feb 18th...

I thought feb 18 was the next date? I posted the dates right around the last time decisions came out.

Ahhh dammit ace. You have a quicker trigger finger!

Yup you're right, just checked. They had told us to not expect anything till March 11th, so I just figured that was the next date. Well, I guess I'll be hearing soon. Sounds fun.

Haha I would rather find out sooner than later. I wish I knew where I was on the alternate list so that I can gauge which of the remaining 3 acceptance dates to look out for.

I had easily my worst interview at Miami and was accepted... and some of my best interviews at places I was wait-listed... none of it makes any sense at all

You know someone who has received merit scholarship already this year? An earlier post said they called and the office said they were holding off until april to send out merit scholarships. And nobody here on SDN has reported receiving anything which is hard to believe that nobody here would.

Define bad. I can bet that mine was far....far worse. Lol.

I'll cross my fingers all the same though.

Yes, I personally know someone who has received a merit scholarship this year.

Plus, in last years thread people reported getting scholarships even earlier in the cycle!

Right but NOBODY on SDN has received anything yet which is hard to believe due to how amazing everyone on here is 😉👍 And with the office saying wait until April... Did they receive it recently? Maybe they are starting to send them out... guess I'll be stalking the mail man again

Lol - We're all superstars ... incredibly humble superstars 😉! But yeah, they received it very recently. Definitely time to break out the stalker kit and hunt down the mail-man!

Anyone else waiting for their letter after the acceptance call? (Accepted in January)

I heard I was put on the alternate list after 2 weeks post interview even though they said the earliest we would here was 4 weeks. Interviewed 1/16, status changed 2/2, and emailed 2/4.

Ok I guess they've been running ahead of schedule. Also, it seems like a ton of people are getting that dreaded alternate list. It must be much tougher to get an acceptance this late in the cycle. The fact we were invited late means our pre-interview score was on the lower side relative to the early invites.

Agreed

Welp, all of us on the alternate list have 3 more chances before we have to play the actual waitlist game in late April. I'm rooting for everyone!

Still haven't reached final decision, despite being told I would find out on January 7th. Trying SO HARD to be patient...

Haha thank you for this update! Setting up camp in the bushes next to the mail box as I type this

I was skipped 3 times ... it's the worst

No problem! I figured people would want to know they might not have to wait until April ... although I know it's just going to make us all that much more neurotic 🙂

Yeah, @amad01 has me beat - I was only skipped twice - but the waiting is torture :nailbiting:. We're all rooting for you!

Thanks!! Yeah, this Wednesday will be my fourth time. Unfortunately, I called admissions and they said the meant they would let me know sometime between January 7th, and the date of matriculation. Is that a joke?! haha :smack:

Does anyone have the chart that was posted a while ago about how they rank applicants? AFAIK there was a score assigned to PS, LOR's, Harship, Etc.

Thanks!

Just got an II this morning for MD and MD/MPH! SO EXCITED! LizzyM~68 and I had my application complete mid October. Quick question though. Am I supposed to be getting a confirmation email about my interview date?

I would highly suggest you just call the office immediately and schedule a date. Others including myself had problems with the portal. I signed up for some early October dates but never received confirmation and then the portal went blank so I called and they said they never got anything. I then got stuck with an interview a month later

Oh! I see. I'm going to go do that right now then. Thanks so much!

I would recommend flying into ft. lauderdale and renting a car if you can do those things. It was far cheaper for me than flying into miami. Also, airbnb is a good option if you can't find student hosting.

You're going to need transport to get to the MPH site.

Thanks for the recommendation! I'm probably going to end up doing that. Going to wait for that confirmation email first though before I book anything. Hopefully I can get a student host so I don't have to drop a chunk of money on hotel.

15 more minutes! good luck everyone! when I was accepted my call came at 5:13 EST

oh.. and it was a blocked number! if you start buzzin and see blocked you better start dancin

THIS IS WHAT IT FEELS LIKE TO BE THE UGLIEST GIRL AT THE DANCE!

Edit: Seriously? Nothing yet?

Yup....2 more chances left. -____-

lol well it's probably safe to assume they're done making the happy phone calls for the day. How late do the waitlist emails usually come in?

I was under the impression that if we were placed on the alternate list, we would not hear till after their normal rounds of acceptances are made? So the 2 more chances do not really apply to us, we come into play as people withdraw their acceptance.

most schools yes, miami no... at least according to how it is explained at every interview

Oh, I guess I misunderstood. So will there be an official waitlist that comes out after all interviews are completed?

I'm pretty sure no one has gotten in here. That one person with 2 posts doesn't really count lol. Would have expected to hear from atleast a couple of people.

Did you check out when they were going over this at the interview and miss it in this thread lol.

Again, at miami they pick the top 20 ish candidates at every meeting. People that previously interviewed and are waiting are in the pool to get picked. The school seems pretty numbers driven so I'd guess that the interviewers score the applicants and they go by the top 20 scores if their post interview is anything like pre interview.
