2014-2015 University of Pittsburgh Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
First tier as well! Having mixed emotions now about what this might mean for me in the near future, but for now I will take it as a small victory!

Just keep in mind that a lot of people who are accepted to Pitt are also accepted to/waiting on responses from other great schools, many of which are also non-rolling and don't release decisions until March. I know the wait sucks, but there will definitely be movement.

Is there anyone set on going to Pitt this August? If so where are you thinking of living?

Most of 1st tier gets in (if not all). Don't fret! Last year, some of the second tier was let in.

How do you know most of the 1st tiers get in (If not all), as opposed to half? Also, is most 60, 70, 80%? I'm just curious, not doubting you!

I would say a majority of the MS1 class is in either Shadyside or the Darragh apts with Squirrel Hill, Bloomfield, Friendship, and Lawrenceville following further behind.

I mainly say that because of what I heard the year before mine, and the fact that a few second tier WLers got off as well. It seems like they ran through almost, if not all, of the first tier before letting off 2nd tier people. (Which would make sense logically).

Ahh okay. I hope that's true! I also heard that last year (or the year before), after they got through a certain amount of 1st tiers (maybe half?), they merged 1st and 2nd tiers, and therefore, tiers were disregarded, which may be why a handful of 1st tiers didn't get in, and a handful of 2nd tiers did get in.

Nope, that did not happen.

Oh okay, good to know, I stand corrected! It is interesting how all of these legends come to be, or how things get grossly misinterpreted/reworded hahah. Thanks, Ismet, for dispelling!

Just opened my waitlist letter, and got 1st tier! Best of luck to everyone come March/April!

Actually, Admissions told me that wait-list movement starts during early February and continues into the spring (rather than March like the previous two years). Maybe it has something to do with the earlier school choice decision deadline for this application cycle.

Wow, that would be really nice if they start accepting from the WL in February. I just assumed the end of March from looking at the last two years' threads.

Did anyone receive confirmation that the admissions committee got their update letter?

That would be super awesome! Valentine's day present? Yes, please!

I called them and they told me that they do not send the confirmations. If you'd like, you can call and ask, and they can confirm it via phone for ya.

I'm a bit of a noob so I have to ask: how does one go about accepting the offer? If I'm not mistaken the acceptance letter says to mail in the deposit between April 30th and May 15th. Do I have to do anything else, like contact all other schools and withdraw even if I don't have a final decision?

Thank you in advance

You can withdraw from any schools. For schools where you have an acceptance, it's nice to withdraw because it frees up the WL. If you're deadset on one school then withdraw from everywhere else and just sit tight until you can send in your deposit.

You don't have to do anything to hold your seat for Pitt until April 30th. Of course it's polite to withdraw as early as possible from any school that you are sure you won't be attending given your available options. But it's not required. As long as you have some doubt, then you are free to decided among viable options by April 30th. Just don't be that girl who hold 20+ seats for as long as she could (source: Pitt admission). The deposit after April 30th is for the purpose that in case you get poached off waitlist, or in case you don't attend for some reason.

How do they notify you of waitlisted movement change to your app?

I assume email, but do accepted and rejected applicants get the same email saying that there has been a change, or does one get that status change email, while the other either gets told acceptance or rejected straight in the mail?

I believe you just get an email saying there's a change in your status. Then you check the portal.

Also at this point the only change is acceptance. Rejections have been made.

It means you have a very good chance from what I hear (most students come from wait-list). Also according to Pittmed admissions, we may hear late February and onward. Maybe they'll surprise you this Friday, next Friday or May.

thanks for letting me know. that's wonderful news. fingers crossed now 🙂

Huge congrats! Did you send any updates after the waitlist notification?
Thanks!!
No, I sent an update in January before decision went out, so I didn't really have anything to add. But maybe it was so close to the decision date that they didn't look at it until afterwards... I'm not sure.

Congrats to all accepted!

Does anybody know how many acceptances went out today/ how many more waves they expect to see? Also, for those accepted, did your portal status change as well, or was it only an e-mail?
