2014-2015 University of Washington Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
anyone have an idea how many OOR applicants they interviewed this year?

I heard 60 from one of the students on my interview day.... on their website it says they accepted 38 OOR students last year so that would make the acceptance rate ~ 63% which seems way too high.

Eh, but they do get thousands of applications from OOR. I would think that to even get an interview when you're OOR, there has to be something particularly desirable in your application. This might lead to an already more selected group, which would lead to the high acceptance:interview ratio.

Does anyone have experience with the MD/MPH program? The deadlines to apply to the MPH as a matriculating student are coming up very soon and I am having a hard time deciding whether to apply to the epidemiology track or general health services track.
I know I want to apply my MPH domestically and work more on the policy side than community outreach.

I'm considering the same thing. It's really the main reason I wish I could make it to Second Look. I'm considering just messaging the E-2014 or earlier classes through fb to hear their thoughts on it.

Also note that they count the MSTP (MD/PhD) students among the OOR, which is probably close to 10 offers with about 6 or so matriculating.

Oh that's a good idea, let me know if you find out anything? I'll share any info from 2nd look 🙂 (though it's after the application deadlines...lol).
Also I emailed the MPH folks about more timeline specifics so I will ask them about differences! I just think students will have the most candid explanation of how the programs are different and which ones are more useful after school.

That's odd that the deadline is so early because the Global MD/MPH deadline (which is what I'm interested in) is December 1st. Did you ask specifically for MD/MPH?

If you can't decide before the deadline, don't worry. You can always apply as a current student. There were a couple second years that decided to go the MD/MPH route after taking Medicine, Health and Society class that we take during second year or after doing their III project. It's not like you can only get into the program before school.

Still on cloud 9...I really want everyone else to get some good news!

My EXCOM stated on the phone that they are 99% confident that 5 more seats are approved, but they have to wait to notify those 5 people.

Also, I asked to be part of the Facebook Group - please accept me!!

Accepted Idaho applicant! Was called tonight and I've never been so happy. WWAMI it is! !!!!!!
YAAAY CONGRATULATIONS!! 😀

Yeah Epi is Mar 13 and Health Services is Mar 31. The email was from the MD admissions office; from what I understand there is no separate application process for MD/MPH students from MPH in general. Global Health is in December? Different departments I guess

@BABSstudent Do you have a general idea of how many of your classmates chose to do an MD/MPH? Or know what any of them are planning to use their MPH for?

Congrats!!! I was really rooting for you!!

It's definitely not a popular option. I only know a handful of people that are in the program. I think a lot of the reason is that an MPH costs extra to get while not really providing a financial reason to get it. But if that's what you want to do, then it makes sense to get it.

If you get an MD/MPH, you can decide where you want to work. You could go the hospital route and try to do community health. Or you could work for NGOs, the CDC, research, academia, the national government making healthcare policy decisions, or international medical organization. You kind of pick what you enjoy and then go that route doing more of the administration work behind the scenes, write grants, and implement community projects, etc. It's still medicine, but you are responsible for the bigger picture.

I'm excited for the floodgates to open up soon, and for all of your acceptances to start pouring in!

As many already know, Idaho matriculates will now be spending both MS1 and MS2 in Moscow, Idaho. We created a FB group for the 30 (hopefully 35) who will be spending that time together, until we can meet up with and get to know the rest of the student body.

To join the group, paste the following into your search bar: https://www.facebook.com/groups/1531370233808661/

Or search facebook for: UWSOM Idaho WWAMI E-2015

Congrats to all of those who have been accepted so far! There are still many, many more acceptances to come!

Final Excom tomorrow and Tuesday according to my sources. Top 30ish on ranked wait list usually get in, but it is a waiting game 🙁

It is very hard to not get my hopes up for notice sooner than the end of week or even next week. But from past experience, the notifications are all but predictable.

On my interview day, I was told by a current student that it is not uncommon for applicants accepted from OOR to receive in-state fee waivers, allowing them to pay in-state tuition, as a form of financial aid. Has anyone else heard anything to that effect? Also, once waitlisted, do students get to know their position on the waitlist?

I can answer half. You will find out your ranked position if waitlisted. And it sounds as though the portal will show where in the waitlist acceptances have been made in the next few months.

On my interview day I spoke with an OOR student on an in-state-fee waiver! I'm not sure how/why that student received that or how common it is.

Does anyone know about how many applicants are SUC'd?

What are your sources?
It would make sense that they would do it this week. They had the last round of Idaho interviews last week and already accepted their top choices from that pool. It wouldn't make a whole lot of sense to take this week off and then make the final decisions next week when all the interviewing is already done. Although, as I'm sure we all found out, med school admission is all but predictable.

Just a helpful tip for those anxiously waiting: On the day that you think you may hear back....keep your phone on you at all times (and charged up!! I rec'd the call with 2% battery), but do go out, have a beer, and be with some good friends/family. That way, you'll kinda forget about it temporarily and only be pleasantly surprised by one of the best calls of your life. He called me late in the evening on a Friday night (9pm Mountain Time). Good luck!

Well, I guess I'll be at the bar for the next two weeks 😉 :hungover:

Anyone else feel a rejection around the corner after all this waiting lol

The second look registration deadline is this Friday. Another sign that acceptances will come out before then!

Man I wish more schools had admissions folks post on SDN. I know some DO schools do.

Stumbled upon this on their website:

"Sometime between March 15 and March 31, the Executive Committee meets for two to three days to make final decisions on those Washington and out-of-region applicants who are still “under consideration”. Final acceptances and rejections are made, and the Washington/out-of-region alternate list is constructed at this time.

Wyoming, Alaska, Montana, and Idaho final decisions are made on the day after interviews are completed for that state.

All final decisions are sent by email, so be sure to manage your email account carefully."

Although, I seem to recall @royfan mentioning that decisions came out the 14th last year. Either way, that seems like better news for you WAMI applicants, as they construct their list separate and right after the last interview dates. Best of luck all you Washingtonians.

That's because you're from Idaho....WAMI states have their Excom meetings on Friday after their interview week(s) conclude.

When I called the office during the last week of Feb, they told me that all final decisions for Washington students would be coming out by latest March 13th...so I guess we'll see!!

Three more days... 😱

One of the nurses I work with said UWSOM was on the local news this morning indicating that the final EXCOM meeting is (in fact) today in which the final final decisions are to be made and expected to be delivered sometime afterwards. I guess the other part of the story, which should come as no surprise to us, is how small the class size is in respect to the number of applicants they've had to review.

I didn't catch the news though.

Thank you for sharing.. That is pleasantly frightening news : / decision day is upon us!

Yes, thank you very much! I'm so anxious to hear the verdict soon!!!

The skeptic in me wonders why that would even be on the news, but the optimistic me really hopes that's true.

I feel like I'm counting down every minute that goes by...
You're not alone! If they do call tonight, I hope it's before 6! Have to be teaching from 6-9 and I might lose all focus if I get a call in that time frame :soexcited:

So...I was just watching KQLT, a local Boston channel. And a Harvard School of Medicine official was discussing the class ranking with the local weather man.

Cause that is what medical schools do, talk about internal information on the local news. Wouldn't want about 173 old people in Seattle to continue in suspense about whether or not their future gastroenterologist got into medical school.

Medical schools definitely wouldn't want to post admission related information to their admissions facebook page where 100% of the millennial generation spends 99.9999% of their time.

Just saying......
