2014-2015 University of Washington Application Thread

Rejection email :/ really stings since UW was my undergrad. Guess it wasn't meant to be.

Another SUC email, I think that's 3 now. I feel this is gonna translate into a rejection haha
Same. I don't even know why they're still sending them at this point. It's just torture. Although, I wouldn't say that this will necessarily translate into a rejection. The fact that we're still under consideration is something (as evidenced by the numerous people above who weren't so lucky). From what I can tell, they're just holding onto everyone that is competitive and will fill up the rest of the class (around half, I think?) in mid March. That's how it's been past years.

I got my first SUC today... meh.. I interviewed on 1/21. We'll see how it all turns out! Keep hanging in there everybody!

You never know.

This makes sense especially considering that on their website they mention that they don't have a truly rolling admission meaning they like to pool competitive applicants and consider them in large numbers so that those interviewing later have similar chances.

Second SUC here. Interviewed 1/7. Hopefully only one more month to go.

Any out of region applicants who interviewed on January 23rd got an acceptance yet?

Rejected. My hunch was right.... Stings a lot being a re-applicant. Thought I improved my app significantly....

Odd that I was rejected just now as well after being SUC'ed for the past few months. Guess I wasn't good enough for the final meeting.

I was a reapplicant as well...I know the sucky feeling 🙁

Interviewed 2/2 OOR. Got my first SUC email last night. I honestly thought my interview went terribly so this gives me slight hope.

Anyone who was SUC'd sent in an update, LOI? Or should I wait until if I'm waitlisted to send those?

Send in your LOI now. Once they make the wait list, ur rank is set - nothing can't change it.

I know it says that it doesn't help or hurt, but a good way to express your intent is via Thank You letters to each of your interviewers (make sure not to contact them directly, but through the admissions office). Good luck! Hope you hear good news.

Will do this as well. thanks!!

I sent a handwritten one to my EXCOM directly to his physician office, hoping that it wouldn't get lost between Highlights Magazine and drug promotional flyers. I figured the admin office has enough work to do.

The admin office actually specifically asks that you send it to them and not directly contact the interviewers as they will make sure the interviewers receive it promptly. This is also why you get no contact information for your interviewers.

Hello all,

Could somebody explain to me how the SUC process works? I interviewed in the first week of February and just got an SUC e-mail yesterday evening. In the e-mail it says that last year ~32.5% of SUC candidates were accepted. On their website I believe that they accept roughly 32.5% of the people they interview. Could anybody share their thoughts?

Oh well.

SUC is not a bad thing. I got one even though my EXCOM hadn't even met about me, yet. While UWSOM does send out acceptances, it seems like they don't send out as many as most schools do by this point in the year. Getting an SUC means you are competitive enough, but either they are hoping to consider you further against more applicants, or they're just limiting how many acceptances they send out at that point. From how I understand it, after December those with SUCs will be continued to be reviewed either throughout the cycle or in a few "last meetings" by mid-March.

Since UWSOM does state that applying late doesn't affect your chances too much, I bet it's because they send out a lot of SUCs so that those interviewing late have similar chances as those that interviewed earlier and were SUC.

I hope that helps and others can fill in more. I know BABS knows it in more detail since he's already a student and all, haha.

Anyone have thoughts or experience with sending additional letters of recommendation post-interview (and post-various SUC emails)? They say their deadline is in December, but does that change if you've interviewed? I gotta say, this OOR thing is not awesome.

If it's in line with an update to your application, I don't see why they wouldn't accept it. Either way, it definitely wouldn't hurt your application even if they have a policy of not considering LORs after December.

Agree with HabisY. I sent in an update accompanied with two "LORs". They were very brief and more just to supplement my two teaching reviews that I sent in with them. It can't hurt!

I just got another FinAid email. It's longer than the one I got this morning. Did that happen to you guys too?
Yes, in the first email they mentioned they would be sending another email regarding the fafsa shortly to follow.

I got 2 financial aid emails as well :-/ and it definitely is a tease... bahhhh... :arghh:

Yes it makes your heart skip a beat when you see an email from them. On another note, it's too bad that we have to use our parent's financial info when applying for loans. Given that UW seems to like applicants with "life-experiene" I can imagine many of us are financially independent (in that we support ourselves through real world employment).

There are ways to get around it especially if you have a spouse, but I'd specifically consult the Financial Aid Office about it.

I read it to be that we only need parental information if we wanted to be considered for the need-based scholarship. My dad pretty much refuses to ever fill out the fafsa again. So I definitely didn't include my parents info this time around.

One of the large loans you can take as a med. student requires parental information (but, again, there are exceptions for certain cases). If you're IR, you probably don't have to worry about it (half-off tuition/less loans necessary), but as an OOR, I have no choice but to put my parental info in, even though I'll be paying for everything myself. So it goes . . .

But does parental financial info impact FAFSA?
They say on their website that it does not affect eligibility for Stafford loans through FAFSA, so I included it, but you might want to confirm that with a financial aid adviser. I kind of regret not doing that.

Isn't there a gov't loan that req's parental info or am I mistaking it for something else?
I think that's only for undergraduate loans. Everything for grad students doesn't need parental info.

I was thinking of the Grad Plus Loan, (which req's a Credit Check). The Loan for Disadvantaged Students req's parental info. Sorry for the confusion.

In my (poor) defense, they never sent me the second Fin Aid (FAFSA) email until I asked them about it, which I just received and clarifies all of this.

Last edit: The long paragraph email format is making me go cross-eyed . . .

Haha, a few spaces would have been appreciated!

BABS, do you know how much is generally gifted to medical students each semester via FAFSA? Is that amount impacted my parents financial info, if you provide it on the application?

(A potentially sad) Question:
If we were told that phone calls would be received today indicating acceptance, is all hope lost after 7pm?

We won't be hearing back until mid March. Don't worry about it.

are any accepted students on here going to second look? and is second look worth going to?
It looks like a great opportunity, but as an OOR applicant that's certainly going to UW, I'd rather spend the money on seeing people and doing other things not at all related to medical school.
