2014-2015 Virginia Tech Carilion Application Thread

Okay. I've decided to attend VTCSOM!! Now looking at apartments.
Does anybody have recommendations as to where I should live (hopefully with a roommate)?
Currently looking at "South16 at the bridges."
I would appreciate any advice!

South 16 is expensive and tiny. Recommend old SW (only some parts), wasena, grandin, crystal springs. There isn't that many good apartment complexes in Roanoke, but there is a lot of duplexes. Your best bet is to look on Craigslist. If you send me the ad I can give you general area advice. Avoid SE and NW.

So, as far as where current students live: most in my class is in Crystal Springs, downtown, and Old Southwest. We have a chunk in south16 as well--which is a judgment call. Those who chose to live there appreciate the proximity to school, the amenities (workout room, starbucks), etc. I (and others) chose not to live there because it is rather expensive and small (as noted above)--plus for me, that's a little TOO close to school. However, you should visit/ask more questions and see what you think will work for you personally!

I currently live in crystal springs with roommates and love it, going to live here next year. Super safe, 3 min drive to school, close to the greenway for running/biking, pretty area, and blocks away (max) from most of my friends. I hope this helped--PM/post with any more questions! Also, if you don't mind pulling up the thread from last year's cycle, I believe a student posted a nice description of all the different parts of Roanoke.

Thank you so much for this information! I will definitely look into the other areas. I recall that the students I met at the reception recommended the Crystal Springs area, so it must be a really nice place.
I was wondering what you mean by "TOO close." I'm new to this "looking for a place to live" thing, so I don't understand how being close to the school could be a bad thing.
Thanks again!

Again, it is totally a personal thing! South 16 is literally right across the street from school, which is super convenient. My house is maybe a 3 minute drive to school (10-15 minute walk), also very convenient. I spend the majority of my life stressing out at school, so I want just a little separation from it when I go home, and always being within eyesight of it just isn't for me. I also like living in a neighborhood, not being in a big apartment complex, having more space, not paying as much, doing outdoorsy stuff in the neighborhood with my friends, etc etc. But like I said, there are those that live at South16 and enjoy it. I really just recommend visiting and figuring out what kind of living situation works best for you!

Anyone have any idea if they are sending out acceptances for the April round today? I know they said sometime this week.

I also sent in my deposit and withdrew from other places so I am official as well! If anyone is looking for a roommate please PM me. I would love to go down and visit/check out the area.

Can't wait!

I just got on the phone with them, we wont hear back till next week or the week after. They haven't finished voting yet....the anxiety is killing me haha.

Aw, man. Thanks for calling and asking.

*faints*

At my interview day, Dr. Workman mentioned that there "might" be a second look event. Any idea if it's in the works? I'm very interested in traveling down to hear more about the school and look for an apartment/roommate(s).
If you're interested in coming back for a second look, there is no official day, just contact admissions and they will set up a tour!

Just got an update email! Voting on applicants has been completed, and it looks like additional acceptance offers will go out early May after the April 30th deadline! Good luck all!

Just got an email - apparently April voting is completed. I'm assuming they already made all their calls for the week? They said they "plan to offer additional acceptances during early May". Guess that means more waiting.

Jinx...
So are those May offers the ones decided today? I'm slightly confused

Anyone know what to do about financial aid stuff? I'm hoping they send out an FA checklist or something.

Ditto. I have the award sheet from the Fin Aid Office, but I'm not sure we need to do anything else at the moment.

Yeah, I know. I looked hokiespa but there are a bunch of different loan types and some are specific to VT so I am not sure what the heck I'm doing.

Just got rejected. That was a pretty dickish email imo, they could have just said I was rejected in the first line instead of talking about acceptances and future voting for like 2 paragraphs beforehand. >_<

You made me re-read my email twice. Sorry to hear that, friend. Out of curiosity, how did they phrase it? Seems unreasonable...

"Greetings from VTC:

This week the VTCSOM admissions committee completed their April round of voting. The 156 remaining applicants from MMI weekends 1 - 6 (September - March) were among those reviewed in this round.

We currently have more than 42 acceptance offers out to applicants, and they have until April 30 to confirm whether they plan to attend VTCSOM this summer. We plan to offer additional acceptances in early May, after we hear from all of our current accepted applicants.

However, based upon the results of the admissions committee's April vote, your record will not be considered further at VTCSOM for this application cycle."

It's like ****ing really? WHO words a rejection like that? They could have skipped all the other details, which don't apply to people like me who are rejected.

Sorry to hear that, I'd agree that's pretty brutal. Best of luck elsewhere.

Definitely seems that way. My impression of it was that they voted on who gets to stay on the acceptance/wait list

So they basically voted and built a ranked waitlist at this point? I wish this process had a little more transparency.

Same. "Oh, we're planning on sending out some acceptances in May! ....You will not be among them." Thanks, dudes.

To be fair, VTC was probably the most transparent school I applied to. Most schools give us much, much less than they did.

Looks to me like of the around 240 interviewed, 80 have been offered acceptances. The April voting was most likely to rank the candidates for the wait list, and how deep they go on the wait list will be determined by how many of the 42 acceptances currently out are turned down.

This is a bit random of a question, but does VTC rank students during preclinical and clinical years? I'm curious since it's a pass/fail system.

afaik it's graded the whole way through.

Preclinical Pass/Fail with ~70-75% = Passing during Blocks 1-8, graded during clinicals (as with the vast majority of medical schools). If I remember correctly, Dr. Vari said that no one has failed a block yet.

There was a study that tried to compare how different schools rank their students (i.e. quintiles, Excellent/Outstanding/Great/Good) for the Dean's Letter. VTC puts their students into thirds. I'll update this post with the source document.

This links to an article where a program director compiles the MSPE's from US allopathic medical schools. In short, very few schools provide complete information to compare their students.

Actually, this is not quite right. This is something I should clarify. We are not ranked in any of our years. Your grades are only reported as pass/fail. There is no honors. We do not have the quintile or honors system here. We have Letters of Distinctions which are given to a select few students in various domains after 2nd, 3rd, and 4th yr. I hope that helps.

Well that's quite a game-changer. Thanks for correcting my misinformation!

In case anyone is looking for a place to live in Roanoke (if this is your choice that is) let me know! I have been looking at a few places so I have some insight and am looking for roommates!

How long do we have to respond to the offer?
My email said May 18th, so about two weeks I believe. I would respond within a week though, just to be safe and give others who are waiting a chance to be accepted as early as possible.

First time posting! Been following this thread pretty heavily, still waitlisted :/ Does anyone from years past know how long tech keeps their waitlist going? Can't imagine holding out until August for a class size so small. Fingers crossed for that call

Don't know the answer to that question but just wanted to say I am rooting for you 🙂

Officially withdrew this morning. Extremely tough decision but I hope one of you receive it!

Dying for any kind of noise. If any one hears post about it!
