2015-2016 Central Michigan University Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
For anyone who received an acceptance yesterday, did you get any kind acceptance email today?

Nope, not yet. It'll probably be sent out later today.

Hmm... Just wondering, since some of us December 4th people have not gotten an email or phone call. And of course, I'm sure most of us are completely overanalyzing this and wondering what it means. Lol.

I was accepted as well! I don't even know what I said on the phone, I was shaking, tearing up, and in complete shock! Looking forward to meeting my new classmates!!!! 🙂

I just accepted the offer on the portal 🙂

Congrats everyone.

For those that received a call, can you comment on how many calls they have yet to make. 🙂

Dec 4 interview here. #Accepted...had an amazing time, really like the school! I am on the fence about it compared to my state school (tuition) so let us see what happens!

Advice to other people who have NOT interviewed yet: BE YOURSELF. I cannot stress this enough. The admissions staff are down to earth and extremely knowledgeable on who will be a great fit for the school, show them that you have what it takes! Low stress MMI and high energy campus..please please please understand that they want to see how you will be as a physician. Nobody cares about your MCAT or GPA at this point...they heavily screen for interviews so YES I think the interview is the maker or breaker. Good luck!

For those whose traveled for an interview--Which airport did you fly into and how did you get to the school from there? I cannot find any information about this when I ran a search here on SD. I am interviewing in a few weeks and would like to book everything soon. Thanks!

I flew into Detroit, It was about a two and a half our drive. I would have flown into Grand Rapids, but the airline I flew had much less expensive flights going to Detroit.

It seems like it's a little challenging getting to the campus. I heard of an airport in Lansing. Did you or anyone else have to get a rental car?

I went through Lansing. Very small and cozy airport. They have an enterprise there and its about 1 hr drive to Mt. Pleasant from the Lansing airport. There was not a lot of taxi service and zero uber service when I was there. So I highly recommend getting a rental. 🙂

Awesome I'll look into that and Detroit as someone mentioned. Thank you!

It's also worth looking into flights to Bishop Airport in Flint and MBS near Saginaw, which is less than an hour away from CMU. Good luck!

"Your supplemental application review is complete but an interview decision is pending. While we make every effort to provide application decisions in a timely manner, it is possible that an applicant could remain without an interview decision until February." ---> got this status today. Has anyone else gotten this? How long did you wait for a decision?

+1

Has anyone gotten rejected pre-II yet? I certainly hope that isn't the case for me.

Got my fingers crossed for an II here

My status was like this for about a week, and then I got an II

Foxm1 got a quick interview but I've had that message for what seems like a month or two now so it really doesn't mean much I think.

+1 had this forever as well as the red circles next to Interview Complete etc. etc. I called them about the red marks - they said it's just a glitch = meaningless.

For those of you who interviewed/or for any current medical students - would you mind sharing your thoughts on the pros and cons of the CMED? it seems that the website doesn't provide a great amount of information on the program. And if anyone can compare this program to WMED (which i know is more expensive), i'd love to hear your thoughts on that as well. Thanks all and good luck this cycle!

Here are some things that I noticed on my interview day:

Pros

*The school seems to be very receptive to student input
*Small class size means that there is a strong sense of community
*Pass/fail grading system means that students are more willing to help each other out, less cutthroat
*Team-based learning is helpful because students can support each other
*Brand new facilities
*Plenty of community outreach opportunities
*Very friendly faculty and students

Cons
*Since the school is so new, nobody has been matched into residency out of the program yet. That kind of uncertainty can be a little scary
*Also because the school is so new, it isn't widely recognized
*Not a whole lot to do in Mount Pleasant
*School doesn't have their own hospital
*Little funding for research
*Emphasis is on rural/underserved, so this may not be the program for you if you're considering a highly competitive specialty

Overall, my initial impression was very good!

I personally did not apply to WMED (mostly because it's so expensive), so I don't know much about it.

Really appreciate your feedback on this, Thank you!! The small class size/ team based learning/ friendliness aspects sound fantastic. I've been wondering about the 3rd/4th year clerkships as well in saginaw, whether students have a positive impression of the education there. I'm ignorant regarding the downsides of not having its own hospital - is it that something that would make it more difficult to land residencies? Or moreso, something that makes it difficult to get a continual relationship with physicians from yr 1 - 4? eitherway, thanks again foxm1

For the people who have had interview invites:
On your portal, did you ever have red exclamation points after interview etc that eventually turned into an interview invite or did you automatically go from being reviewed to green / interview offer status? My last 3 categories have been red exclamation points for a while just wanted to know if I'm out of the running already.

I never had any red exclamation points. I only got a green check mark for "You have been invited for an interview." However, I don't think that the red exclamation points really mean anything unless Admissions contacts you saying that your status has changed.

I also have red exclamation marks in my portal. Each of them just say "Incomplete" next to them. It's been like that for a while now.

I'm thinking that this is probably a hold then , since you never had it and you have an interview

I had the red exclamation points for about a month before I got my II!!!

For those who interviewed at MSUCHM and CMU, I was just wondering if you noticed a difference between the MMI. Was one harder than the other, or were they the same? I feel like I bombed the one at MSU, and it resulted in a waitlist. I bought a few books to prepare for my interview in Jan, because I REAAAALLLYYY want to go here. Just looking for some insight!!!

Could you tell me what books you bought to prepare for the interview? I have an interview coming up next month.
Thanks

I interviewed and was accepted here (CMU). Best advice I can say is: #1 know the mission of the school. Know the kind of doctors they want to train. #2. Relax! If you over prepared you will be stiff and sound rehearsed. This MMI is very laid back, very welcoming, and focuses on the holistic aspects of medicine.

CMU wants to know if you are a good fit for their school. They want to know if you are a good person. They don't want to know if you can rehearse answers and practice well before hand. This interview is to get to know you as a person... So be a good person. 🙂

I prepared for this interview (and all of my interviews) by reading all the info on the school's website the day before. Reviewing my own application the morning of. And having a few conversations about the different aspects why I want to go into medicine with medical professional friends.

Thanks for this!!! I've gotten used to over preparing myself from being a pre-med undergrad hahaha. I just have one question, were there actor stations in the MMI here?

Not sure what you mean by actor stations... and I can't give too much away (darn confidentiality agreement!) However, each of the mini interviews/stations was with someone directly involved with the school. I can't be specific as to what the scenarios were, and they may not even use the same scenarios for each interview day.

I'm not sure there is a way you could actually study for this interview. I got a couple big ethics books before my interviews, and they didn't really help much at all. People told me how important knowing ethics would be... but in all the interviews I've had I found that it wasn't ethics as much as it was understanding the who/what of the situation I was being told about, and understanding the right/wrong about that situation. The deepest any of my interviews (here and elsewhere) have seem to go was whether or not I was aware of patient rights and HIPPA... being aware of these was all that was needed, certainly not the depths of the laws.

CMU's interview isn't there to try and trick you, or put you in a scenario where your inner demons will be revealed. Rather, think about it as an opportunity to shine... they will ask you questions and give you a chance to show them how amazing you are. Be confident. Be amazing. You'll be fine.

Remember: The simple fact that you were given an interview means YOU ARE GOOD ENOUGH!!! They just want to make sure you aren't a robot, or someone didn't write you application for you and fabricated everything about it. A seat at the school is yours... the interview day is a chance for you to take it.

(I hope this makes sense... I have a head cold (yay scribing for a doc caring for people with every variation of upper respiratory infection possible) and sometimes I can be a little incoherent when on cold meds).

For those accepted, when is our FAFSA due? When/where can we find links to fill out for scholarships?
