2015-2016 Stanford University Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Did anyone have a publication that was very recently accepted and not know if/how to enter it on their secondary?

If it's accepted then DEFINITELY enter it. You can just say "Journal name, Accepted date" or "Journal name, in press"

LizzyM = 100 - Age

Higher that is, the better. Some losers will tell you it's:

LizzyM = MCAT_old + 10*GPA

But I prefer the first definition because it's less depressing.

Eek... what about when your first age-based LizzyM is lower than your MCAT/GPA LizzyM, which isn't that high either? sh.....t..

Quick question: when they ask previous application year, if it was the 2012/2013 cycle.. then put 2013? seeing as 2015 is an option?

Yeah application years are denoted by the year of potential matriculation. We're in the 2016 cycle right now

The II invite said to "reserve the entire day (8:00 am - 6:00 pm) for your interview."
Do you think it's possible to catch a flight leaving SFO at 9:45 PM? The alternative would be a flight that leaves at 11 PM but costs over $100 more.

Yes, if you take Caltrain-BART or the Samtrans bus, it should only take 90m (max, probably quicker) to get from Stanford to SFO. On a shuttle or in a cab, it would be more like 45m. You should skip the worst of rush hour if you leave after 6:30.

Hi all,

I'm struggling with Stanford's question regarding Conflicts of Interest for letter writers... in particular, they mention an "Academic associate" as a potential COI. What exactly qualifies under "academic associate" ? A fellow grad student or postdoc? OR would collaborators and research supervisors also be ? Any suggestions on what to do about it?

Thanks

How did you find it? I'm imagining you compulsively checking your spam everyday 🙂
Someone posted on another school thread that their II was marked as spam, so I just checked my junk mail for kicks and it was sitting there

woke up to an II this morning! Complete 9/3 LizzyM 75
only one interview date available still...

All this shows is that schools don't review in strict chronological order. There's no way Stanford is all caught up with apps complete until 9/3. Sit tight and wait dude, quit fussing over complete dates because it's all BS

I think it is filtered alphabetically by the journal name of the applicant's 3rd publication.

I did--I think they only want published articles since it says in the question to only list those that are published. An article that is accepted is not published so I left mine out in order to avoid annoying them..

Disagree. Everyone I know would consider it one and the same. List it as in press.

The instructions state: "Please do not include unpublished papers." A paper that is accepted for publication does not mean that it is published, which means that the article is actually in the journal. At least that's what I've been told by my professors and what a previous thread recommended. Plus, instructions say that it should be searchable by Pubmed

For all intents and purposes, "in press" and "published" mean the same thing. So, if your paper has been accepted (though I'm not referring to "with revisions" or any other conditional statuses), I would make note of it!

I understand what you're trying to say, the issue is that once a paper is accepted and in press, it will be indexed in PubMed within days (not weeks). It can no longer be altered by authors. Thus, it is "published", and that is really what Stanford means. A paper under revision, or review, can still be altered and/or rejected, or withdrawn. The moment it is accepted, it can no longer be altered, and there is questionable ability to withdraw it (a lot of journals just publish the unedited/unformattted version as "advance access") -- the real issue here is: has it passed peer review and been accepted or not.

So quick question. I heard a few people post their rejections after being completed for only 4 days....how did they receive it? Email is the only think I can think of to get it that fast. But, on their site, Stanford posted that rejections, acceptances are sent snail mail. Is this not accurate?

You're mischaracterizing what Stanford wrote. Here's the original quote:
"Applicants will be notified by mail or e-mail of final decision."

So yes, final decisions (and thus the rejections so far) are by email.

Thanks!

I was referring to an email I got from them. But now that I looked back at it they did not specify the type of "mail". They mentioned Interview Invites...be notified by email...some filler information...final decisions notified by mail. So I see where I took a misguided assumption. Guess it's back to checking spam folders...

AMCAS complete 6/21 but just received the secondary! Oh well, at least they remembered to send me one..

still no secondary....

Did you mistakenly put in you haven't previously applied in AMCAS when you have? I did and that delayed my secondary (I emailed them about it and received it two days later).

Thanks! I sent an e-mail to the school. I didn't previously apply to the school. I am just curious why they wouldn't send the secondary since they do not screen anyway.

I still haven't received one either but you give me hope since I was verified on 7/16. I emailed them but I got an immediate response saying they are experiencing a high volume of emails and that they will contact me. That was 2 weeks ago....

Don't you worry everyone gets a secondary invitation (as far as I know) so you will get one 🙂

You will get it for sure.

Me too, still haven't gotten a secondary. Was verified in mid August. This is worrisome..

Submitted secondary in late July... nothing yet about an interview...
Come on Stanford, you were my dream school for college. Show me some love second time around!!:kiss::kiss:
