2015-2016 University of Iowa (Carver) Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Thanks @nwts and @Nova24 for your insight. I would agree with both of you. An employer wants to make sure that his/her employees are in it for the long haul. Makes sense to give preferential treatment to those with instate ties. I would go one step further though and say that "mission of providing medical services to the people of Iowa" exists on their website and "who will actually accept their offer" exists in their hearts. Let us not forget this is a business after all.

TIL to work the Iowa roots angle.

OOS here, interview in the beginning of November. Have no real ties to Iowa besides living one state over. I'll most likely cancel when I hear back from my state school.

Congrats! Did you just get the II? Would you mind sharing your stats 🙂

Any predictions as to when Iowa will release their first post-interview decisions?

I am thinking 10/23.

Why not 10/15? That's when other schools are releasing. I didn't interview here though, so idk

For IS I believe it's 10/15; for OOS, the director of admissions mentioned the adcom wouldn't be meeting until after 10/15 so I wouldn't hold my breath (they only discuss one of IS/OOS for each meeting, or at least that was the impression the DoA gave me). That being said, things might change so who knows.

Has anyone been outright rejected? Couldn't find any in this thread.

edit: spelling

Has anyone heart back from MSTP? Either II or rejection?

Did they tell you 10/15 in the interview?

Yes, for IS. The director of admissions gave a pretty detailed overview of how things break down/how the process works.
Yeah, we had a similar thing in my interview day, but they didn't give us a specific date. Thanks so much for the info!

No problem. If your interview date was really early they probably just didn't have an idea about when the adcom was going to meet. Mine was pretty recent so I'm guessing they had a better estimate.

Did they provide any specifics for OOS decisions? Or was it only known to be later than 10/15?

All she said was that (according to her memory) the adcom wasn't meeting for OOS until after 10/15. Again, can't stress enough the amount of variables/unknowns in that statement. Maybe OOS students will get the decision tab on their secondary on 10/15, maybe they won't. I'd personally sh** bricks if I see it on 10/15, but I'm not expecting it that soon.

Thanks for the insight @Anomandaris, I interviewed about a month ago and they didn't really have any specifics then.

No problem! Do you happen to know when the earliest interviews were? I'm trying to figure out how many OOS students (very roughly) they've interviewed so far. Loved the school and the students. Student host was amazing and would love to go here. Probably over-analyzing things, but man it would be nice to be accepted here

It was the week of 9/7, but I don't know how early in the week they started.

September 9th was the first interview day.

Do you guys know if they interview every M/W/F? Or just W/F? My day only had 2 OOS students, but someone else mentioned that the previous day was almost all OOS... Either way, makes me feel good knowing that there weren't that many people in front of me even if they interview 3x a week haha 🙂

I think my day had 3 OOS students.

Yeah it goes up and down it seems. My day had 2, but a MS said the previous day was 12 OOS students (out of 14)... Either way, the odds look pretty good for us considering their pre-final pool acceptance rates.

I'm not exactly sure. I can't remember what days of the week were available when I selected mine. I do remember that there were maybe 3 or 4 OOS people on my interview day.

IS and OOS seem to be judged separately and have different waitlists. So IS people can be nice to me next week, because I really do love your school.😛

Huh, all of us seem to have have very few numbers of OOS on our interview days. Wonder if the day before mine was just an anomaly then. That makes me feel even better about my OOS chances :claps:...

Yes, we are judged and accepted in a completely separate process from the IS people. To be extra clear, I mean separate as in post-interview decision processes. I.E. OOS applicants aren't compared to IS applicants, only to other OOS applicants.:soexcited:

Hey Guys,

Long time lurker, but figured I would make an account to help others out. OOS interview received this past week. Pretty fast turn around time as has been mentioned before. Was complete end of September. The dates available were in November starting with 11/10 I believe.

Keep your head up. Don't worry about stats. Focus on your essays and motivations for this career path and everything is going to work out. Believe it. :headphone:

Hopefully that means I'll get something soon. I was complete middle of September and have been getting emails from Iowa's sports department, but would really like an interview invite instead haha.

Did anyone else interviewing receive information regarding a $200 travel allowance to help defray the cost? They said I am eligible and I am wondering if I should call and ask (interview is in a week). Money is definitely tight, but at the same time, I don't just want to call and ask for a handout. Anyone else taken them up on this?

The admissions office has no sway with the ADCOM, so I'd definitely take them up on it. Everyone in the office is extremely nice.

Thanks, and you're right, they're nice and helpful! I spoke with someone today and she informed me they'll have reimbursement envelopes to mail in after the interview.

Interview invite just now! OOS. So excited about this one of my top schools.

4.0 cGPA
507 with weak social science section

2100+ hours of research (future first author pub and future pub as contributing author)

2000+ non science work experience

~1000 hour volunteer non clinical

350 hours clinical experience plus experience as a patient.

Again, very very thankful for this great opportunity. Good luck to everyone here and elsewhere

Congrats!! Do you mind if I ask when you applied?
Iowa is a great school!!

IS but nothing on my portal about a decision. A little confused

Edit: never mind called admissions and they said they'll release decisions once a week. Congrats everyone who got in!

Accepted!!!! My heart was beating SO fast as I was trying to login to my secondary to see the decision!! (It still is!)

Congrats, goldspirit12! 😀

May I distract you from your glee with two questions:
  • where does the decision appear on the secondary app?
  • when did you interview?
Thanks and congrats again!
