2015-2016 University of Iowa (Carver) Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I was complete mid-August. Not really comfortable giving specifics. LizzyM 72-74.

Good luck everyone.

So does anyone know if we will get a notification if we are put in the final pool? I guess I could just call and ask....

II. Dec 7th!

I'm excited. Anyone else interviewing on that day?

Can anyone who has interviewed attest to the entire interview day? I.e. How was the day structured, were the interviews conversational, what questions were asked, how the PBL session was, etc?

It starts out with several presentations about the school, curriculum, finance, etc. Lunch with students then tour, then you come back for the important part - they split you into two, one group does CBL and the other interviews. CBL is pretty casual - they say they're just looking at how you interact with the group, so I think the prevailing opinion is just to try to offer a few thoughts and not override anyone. The interview is only 25 minutes, and starts with a structured bit, where they'll ask you to give your two minute who are you speech, then ask you 3 questions from a bank of like 7 questions (all of which are on the SDN interview section) and are not suppose to react to you at all, which is a bit awkward. After that, it loosens up a bit and gets more conversational, though honestly it was still a little more 'what would you do in this scenario?' than I anticipated. ~5 minutes left they'll ask you if you have questions, suddenly a knock on the door and you're done. It's really short. The overall day is pretty un-stressful, though I was pretty nervous in the interview. I wasn't a fan as much of the stone-wall structured bit, but it's nice that it's pretty easy to prepare for it. I think the nerves were more because that's who I am haha, though I tell myself the nerves are because I have a lot at stake in this wager. You can PM me if you have more qs.

I was lucky to get questions already mentioned in the Interview feedback area, but then the rest of it was conversational. More than any interview, I feel they are looking for fit, whether or not your are a robot or serial killer. We talked about music, school, family, etc. It was actually the most relaxed interview so far. And the learning session may or may not have an impact. The MS4s that ran it seemed to indicate that they have no part in the decision.

As a reapplicant this is part of their evaluation. How you interact/their observation is sent to the committee. When I called for feedback, their observation during cbl was included.

Email or phone call?

A struggle: first you get an email saying a decision has been made. Then, with trembling fingers, you must successfully log into the portal and click the Decision tab. There are SO MANY words, I was just scanning and scanning for the word "accepted" lol. It's way easier to just play the video of the dean congratulating you...

Lol you're not joking...it was deff a struggle!

Well, I wasn't accepted today, but how about those #5 Hawkeyes in the CFP rankings! Anyone going to the game on Saturday? I am - It's shaping up to be a gopher burial, and sound payback for what was a cold and miserable day in mpls last year. Grapple on the Gridiron Saturday morning will be fun too!

Wait, MN and IA have a football rivalry?!
Inconceivable! 😉

Does anyone know when the interviews generally wrap up? Do they interview into January? I apologize if this is already on here, but I have tried to search!

I wasn't able to find the SDN interview section you mentioned and am trying to prepare for my interview on Monday. Are the questions more about you and your application or are they questions that require knowledge of medical ethics/ACA?

Look at the header of this page, on the black bar there is a link that says "Interview Feedback". Click on that and scroll down until you find the University of Iowa.

I was looking in the wrong place. Thanks!

The interviews are mostly closed file - they know only your IS/OOS status and where you did your undergrad. The questions to which I was referring in the non-structured bit were more hypotheticals/what would you do in this scenario types.

Will there be many more OOS interviews?

Good luck to everyone else who'll be anxiously checking their emails tomorrow!

Does Iowa do pass/fail for any duration of time or is it graded from the onset?

I believe it is all honors/pass/fail

Thanks! That is what I had gathered as well! One more question, is it possible to do multiple educational tracks there? Or is that not allowed/not feasible ?

If you're referring to the Distinction Tracks, then yes it is. I think it is common, but it is not impossible. The abundance of research opportunities make it straightforward to complete the Research Track and you may be able to incorporate that into the Teaching or Global Tracks. If you get creative and strategize/manage your time well, I think it's possible to combine any you're interested in!

To add to what was said above, it was impressed upon me at the interview that faculty and staff are very supportive of whatever you'd like to pursue in the distinction tracks.

OOS, complete since 7/23, and still "under review"...anyone else in the same boat?

Should we be worried since interviews end in January? :nailbiting:

Thanks, user3471!

You first receive an email saying that the committee has made an admissions decision and to go to your secondary to view it. A new Admissions Committee Decision Tab should be there with the decision!

I'm IS and interviewed 9/28.

Same day as myself! IS and accepted. Congrats! That interview group was awesome.

In my interview I asked about it and was told that a current student is completing three tracks.

Accepted today, OOS interviewed early Oct!
