2015-2016 University of Iowa (Carver) Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Thanks! I think it just worked in my favor, the school feels like a great fit for me and my interests 🙂

Does anyone have intel about whether or not we have student host options? Or has everyone booked hotels?

There is a student host program. There's a form you fill out (you can access it in the interview tab of the secondary). Says it's for 1 night only and they require you to fill out the form 2 weeks in advance of your interview date!

I booked one of the hotels on their list.

There are student host options. You need to fill out the student host form that is embedded in the interview invitation letter.

Curious whether the portal status will switch from "Your file is complete" to something like "Under Review?" Or does it just stay "Complete" until a decision is made?

I never got an email, but logged in to find an II! Thought you guys might want to know to check your statuses!

Complete email 9/3 and II OOS today! Pretty fast turnaround, wow.

Where did it say it, like next to the complete status?

A whole new tab opened up titled "interview."

I finally received an email so it appears the invite hadn't been sitting around a long time.

Can someone who has interviewed already answer this: does the interview day end exactly at 5? Or does it end earlier/later?

Did everyone get a "complete" email from them? I never got one and am kind of nervous that something is wrong with my secondary or they haven't received anything. I submitted the secondary early august.

Yeah, I got one ~1 week after submitting. If you're a permanent resident, make sure you get a copy of your green card to them. If not, doesn't hurt to call them and check! Very friendly folks

Did you check to make sure you submitted everything in the portal? It lays out what has been received etc. Go check and make sure everything has been processed there. Maybe you forgot to send the "Final Application," which is a separate form from the secondary.

Does anyone mind sharing which interview dates were shown as available for them to choose from after they received an II as of recently? Just wondering how quickly they are filling up as I wait to hear from Iowa following completion of secondary! Thanks guys! Good luck to everyone applying!

I never got a complete email (I submitted 7/18) but on the portal it says that my file is complete and everything has been received, including LoRs being downloaded. My inbox has actually not been getting all of my med school-related emails but I figure that if the portal says that I'm complete and shows that I have turned in everything, I won't worry too much about it. It's not uncommon for med school portals to have glitches once in a while as well. If you are in need of more assurance, then I recommend emailing or calling the office just to verify that everything is in order.

I was out of there by 3:45pm.
I just had my interview today! I was done around 3 PM. There are two groups (one interviews at 1:30, while the other does the case-based learning, and then interviews at 2:30). The interview is only 25 minutes long, so I expect that even if you were the last person in the second interview group, you'd be done around 4. You can leave right after your interview.

Great, thanks for the info! How is the CBL session? Are we actually being assessed during that session or is it more of just an informational thing?

The CBL is just to see how you interact with others. You will not be assessed on how well you solve the case.

CBL was definitely more about how then what you contribute. Just say some stuff and don't cut other people off and you'll be totally fine. It was a lot of fun in my opinion. The group of interviewees I was with were brilliant though and had all the answers, but I definitely think this was way less about your medical knowledge and a lot more about how you work with others and how it's important to think aloud alongside other people to solve problems. It's not stressful. Some people had this part before their interview (I did) and I was really happy it worked out that way. It was a great way to start thinking and vocalizing thoughts before the interview actually started.

I had it after the interview, and I thought that worked out great. So basically, don't worry!

II today! OOS but I grew up in Iowa. Complete 8/14

II today! OOS but live in the Midwest. Complete 8/12. Lizzy M 74-75. This is one of my favorite schools and everyone told me not to bother to apply because was OOS.

Very enjoyable interview day. Everyone went out of their way to help you.

Mind if I ask when you finished your day? Does it still end early at like 3-3:45? Anyway, hope your interview went well! Heading there myself in a few days and I'm super stoked!

If you interview on a Friday you are done around 2:00!

Has anyone successfully "in-the-area" emailed Iowa?
I don't have any concrete yes or no for you, but really, I can't imagine what it would hurt to drop them an email. I wonder, though, if you're saying you're in IC to visit friends/family, or if you're saying you're at Wisconsin for an int or at Des Moines for a DO interview? Because Madison and Des Moines aren't really all that convenient, IMO, though I guess if you're flying from California or something, it could be cheaper to rent a car than fly again. GL either way.

Yeah, visiting people in Iowa City. So literally in the area 🙂

Wonder if the whole 'OOS but I'm so deeply rooted IS that my middle name is Iowa' thing really matters. I thought the preference for instate residence was because instaters pay instate taxes which fund instate universities. Not saying that's how it actually works, but I was under the impression that's what we were supposed to Belieb.

I think it has more to do with their mission of providing medical services to the people of Iowa, and the best way to get a Dr to stay in Iowa is choose a student that's from Iowa. They say on their website that half of all of the physicians in Iowa attended the university of Iowa for their medical training.

I think the taxpayer thing only applies to whether or not you get in-state tuition. The thought is that you absolutely must be a resident to get in-state tuition because the difference between in-state and out-of-state tuition is made up by tax money, so they only want taxpayers to be getting that advantage. As far as who gets acceptances, they have a set number of seats for in-state students and a set number of seats for out-of-state students. Amongst the out-of-state people, they are trying to determine who will serve the state of Iowa and who will actually accept their offer, so they are more likely to admit people with ties to the state.

Disclaimer: This is just my understanding. I could very well be misunderstanding this.

I interviewed 2 weeks ago. Is it too late to send a thank you letter to my interviewers?
