2015-2016 University of Maryland Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
II today!!! This will be my second time interviewing with them as I am reapplying this year. Good luck to everyone still waiting. I understand the anxiety that develops from waiting for any news. Hope you all get similar news!

Hey Congrats! If you don't mind sharing, what day did you get your complete email? and are you in-state?

Ah this gives me hope. I was waitlisted last year and wasn't sure if they'd give us another chance. Thanks for sharing, good luck!!

II on 09/25 🙂
I live about 1 hour from the school so it'll be a quick trip

How were the interviews, to those who have already been? Relaxed/conversational, hopefully 😕

Otherwise hope app cycle is going well for everyone. Still a loooooong way to go!

Complete date and LizzyM if you dont mind sharing?

Quick question for all of you fellow In-Staters: I've been having some issues with the Residency Classification form for a multitude of reasons (let's just say that I need to speak with my accountant but he's MIA...) and I haven't submitted it yet. I was complete 8/24 and am worried that my lack of In-State classification could be a contributing factor to no status update. Did you all submit your Residency forms before receiving IIs?? This is my top choice and I seriously hope delayed paperwork isn't the reason I don't get in... HAALP

@mayo33, Maryland has no state mandate so admissions is residence-blind. The in-state/out-of-state classification is solely for financial aid. I read about it before and it was essentially confirmed at my II when the dean spoke about it.

Okay phew, that's good to hear. Thanks for the confirmation!

The interviews and the interview day in general were great! They were very relaxed and conversational. They are just trying to get to know you as a person. Just know your application well!

Just to confirm--I am in state and haven't mailed my form in yet and I interviewed.

Does everyone get an application complete email? I have a Secondary Application Received email but nothing else. Where is it telling people they're under review?

When were you complete and did they send an email informing you?
I haven't heard a peep from them since submitting, so I'm not sure what to think.

Good luck with your other schools!
Was there no change on the portal?

Didn't get complete email or a rejection email. Soley, rejection by regular mail.

Seems to be what they did last year... and not only for rejections but also acceptances.

Rejection by mail? What the hell, that sucks.

Yeah I when I applied a big letter is good a normal sized letter is bad. Just a tip so you don't go from OH MY GOD I got a letter from MD!! to ugh I got a letter from MD...

Good luck to everyone who didn't get in!

I'm sorry to everyone who got rejected and good luck with other schools. I got a letter from them 2 weeks ago and had a panic attack. It was just them asking me to correct something on my "in-state" form lol.

To those of you who got the letters, did you apply as IS or OOS? and how were your stats?

Congratulations to all those receiving good news from Maryland and good luck to everyone still waiting. 🙂

I got my rejection letter in the mail yesterday. Here are my stats for anyone wondering:
App complete 8/8. Lizzy ~70.
OOS (CA), cGPA 3.42/sGPA 3.46, MCAT 35

Rejected.
Complete 7/28, OOS (VA), GPA 3.99, MCAT 33
Kinda makes sense for OOS. Barely above average for MD and, based on MSAR, they choose IS over OOS 10:1

For anyone who has had an interview, when did you find out if you were in the morning or afternoon?

when u arrive for the interview, I had 2 morning ones, some have one afternoon and one morning, while others have both afternoon ones

For anyone who has had an interview, when did you find out if you were in the morning or afternoon?

I had a Monday interview and someone from Admissions called me on Friday afternoon to let me know that my 2 interviews would be in the afternoon so I did not have to arrive until later.

@LucyG congratulations on the interview here! I hope you hear good news soon.

I have an interview at Maryland coming up soon and I was wondering if you could speak to the overall atmosphere/experience of the interview day?

Thanks!

Is it too late to submit a secondary to a school like Maryland?

cGPA 3.69
sGPA 3.58
MCAT 511 (130/124/127/130)

Submit! Why the heck not! (The app fee sucks, but it doesn't suck as much as not taking a chance. And to be honest, the gunner mentality on SDN makes you feel like you're "too late" but don't stress about the gunners.)

Submit it, the cost of medical school is way more than a tiny app fee. However if this year does not go well for you make sure you get your apps in as soon as they open (for school and residency too)

@LucyG congratulations on the interview here! I hope you hear good news soon.

Thanks!

I interviewed in late September, and the atmosphere is welcoming and (linguistically, at least) relaxed. You'll have a chance to mingle with current students over lunch, and the presentations are informative but not rigid. I would imagine the atmosphere will largely be dictated by the other candidates in your interview group, as well as with whom you have your interviews. Nothing to be afraid of, though - there were no surprises, and even though the interviews were a smidge on the rigorous side, like I said there are no surprise questions about the healthcare systems in Europe vs Africa or whatever.

Thank you!! Congrats on your early interview!

Thanks and congrats on your interview as well!

The overall atmosphere was relaxed yet still professional and serious. However, the Admissions staff, deans, and current students made me feel very comfortable. The whole day was very organized and informative. There is both a financial aid and curriculum presentation, the latter being given by a dean, which I really liked because it shows that the school cares about and is interested in each applicant. They really give the impression that they want students to come in not only knowing what it is like to be a student at UMD but also what it is like to be a medical school student period. They stressed multiple times that the day was as much about the school evaluating you as it was about you getting a feel for whether the school would be a good fit for yourself; it's a two way street. The students we got to meet were very nice and honestly seemed happy and balanced.

I had two faculty interviews. The first was an amazing experience as the professor and I really clicked. I believe we were matched because he was in my field of research. Both interviews were very conversational. It was very obvious that both had read my entire application in detail, which I appreciated. I got the normal questions as well as ones specific to my app. I'd say it was overall low stress but that is because I went in prepared for the worst (for me-a drilling interviewer) but hoping for the best 🙂.

Hope this helps and good luck!!

Thanks so much! That was very informative.

P.S. I like your avatar! I have a black lab as well. They're the best!

No problem and I know right! I'm so glad I will have her during medical school to keep me sane.

So I came home from work today to a letter from Maryland. It's a tiny, baby envelope and naturally I assume it's my reckoning day. "Here it is- here's my rejection from my top choice." The next course of action is, of course, to pour myself some bourbon and play Amy Winehouse as I tear open the envelope, expecting the inevitable. I took in a deep breath and-

It was an in-state residency verification thing. I threw my hands up in the air and praised the Pre-Medical Gods for stalling a potential rejection.

(It wasn't nearly as dramatic as that, and I don't own bourbon or any Amy Winehouse records, but I thought it would illustrate my emotions more vividly.)
