2015-2016 University of Washington Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
FINALLY, I sent an email to confirm whether I needed to forward the verification email I got...Got a reply this AM that it takes time since they do it manually. I just saw my application this PM that it is completed, but no email sent yet  But now....I wonder...was it the email I sent...or just timing 😵

Regardless ...

I just received an email that "As an out-of-region candidate, you did not meet the criteria for further consideration to the MD program." However, I fit into one of their special OOS groups based on my GPA and MCAT (LizzyM ~74). Did they throw it out because of some other reason?

I think you are referring to the OHSU special groups. UW does not have such a thing. They look for interest in primary care and an extensive record of service in OOSers.

I'm working on the mission statement and have a question regarding the school text of its mission and values.

"The School values diversity and inclusion and is committed to building and sustaining an academic community in which teachers, researchers and learners achieve the knowledge, skills and attitudes that value and embrace inclusiveness, equity and awareness as a way to unleash creativity and innovation."

What does the school mean when it stated that it values inclusion?

I have an idea of what it may mean but worry that my interpretation of it is incorrect. Any input will be greatly appreciated.

For any OOR applicants who may be curious, I received the request for the mission statement a day after my primary was submitted.

You're right. I was thinking of OHSU. I definitely didn't push primary care in my app so that makes sense!

Finally got a secondary (OOS) and just sent it in. Man those questions certainly seemed redundant, but happy with what I answered now (or at least I'm telling myself 🙂 ).

When did you submit? Did you ever get the mission statement everyone has been talking about?

Are we supposed to get an email when our application is complete? I logged into the portal today out of curiosity to check if my residency verification had been received and saw that my application was complete.

I still have no email, but my app has been complete for a while.

My application was complete July 22nd on my end, and I got a complete email on July 24th. If you haven't gotten an email, check the communication tab, it might be in there.

OOR here with a 4.0 GPA and 523 (100th percentile) MCAT
just got rejected from receiving the secondary
will I have a better chance with the MD/PhD program?

UW is already exceedingly difficult to get into if you're not a resident but you are also above their 90th percentile on GPA and way above their 90th percentile on MCAT score. I don't think the odds are good for you. That said, your stats make you competitive at every top school, so you shouldn't have any problem getting into a great program. Leave the mid tier schools to those of us with mid tier stats 🙂 Good luck!

I just checked the communication tab and the most recent activity was on 7/16, which was when my secondary application was complete. There is no mention of UW sending me a complete email. Should I contact them or is this probably not that big of a deal?

It just said they would be looking at applications and we'd hear back in 4 to 6 weeks, so I wouldn't worry about it. A friend of mine submitted her secondary before you and I submitted after you, but we both got the email on July 24th.

for OOR applicants there is a small screen for receiving mission statement, a very heavy screen for receiving secondary, and the better half of 100 interviews sent. per admissions office
So they just decided not to send me a mission statement? Cause I submitted my secondary a while back!

it may be different for international students...but usually all OOR will get that mission statement then secondaries...but hey if they went straight to secondaries with you...take it!! lol

I'm a CA resident technically, but I spent the first 17 years of my life in Washington. If I didn't have a DARN good reason why I could picture myself in the WWAMI region AND a ton of underserved experience, I probably wouldn't waste my money. Then again, it's only $35 through MSAR for the chance at a secondary (also only $35), so if you're ballin, why not?

Just got my "completed application" confirmation email!

Do you guys mind sharing when you had everything sent in, were marked complete, and received the mission statement? Was there an email for when they got your primary application?

One of my friends is starting at UW and told me the ceremony was in 2 weeks, after they're all done with orientation. Either way hopefully they'll start sending IIs soon 🙂

JUST RECEIVED II! In state, low stats but years of hard work to improve, NEVER thought this day would come.

Would you mind sharing your stats and maybe some of your ECs? You can PM me as well.

I'm just curious because I'm IS 3.84c gpa 3.94 science but 504 MCAT (~28), non trad with great ECs.

Just looking for some hope!

Edit: Congrats!!!!!!!!!

Congrats all! Mind sharing when you were complete?

That is interesting. I was complete on 7.24 and haven't heard anything. Perhaps reviewers are assigned apps based on when they were complete and certain reviewer went through all their apps and those are the folks that heard back, whereas the other reviewers have yet to look at their batch. At least that's what i'll tell myself to prevent a nervous breakdown over the possibility that my alma matter passed me over! 🙂

Congrats to all those with II!

Thank you; I've been throwing a small fit all afternoon. Perhaps you're right.

Congrats to all those with an II!!!!!!! Hoping mine comes sooner or later..

Question: are you all getting IIs to the Seattle campus? Or have they sent them out for the Spokane campus as well?

Congrats everyone who got IIs!!! 🙂 Seems most of them where completed before mid August! I have low stats so I'm probably in for the long wait! I hope I get a fellow SDNer though to meet up with XD

Congrats again! woo hoo!

I'm from Seattle campus, submitted secondary 8/6 and got my complete e-mail on 8/14. Got II yesterday.

I am at the Seattle campus! OOS. In the interview email its says the Spokane interviews aren't until December/ January (Non-trust) and February (trust). They probably have a later notification date.

Lol, what does trust vs non-trust mean anyway?

I'm in state. My GPA and MCAT are on the lower end (3.5/27), but I've been working in research after graduating for the last 2 years and have A TON of shadowing and volunteering with disadvantaged populations.
My primary was verified by AMCAS 8/5.
I received secondary invitation 8/7.
I submitted secondary 8/24.
I got an interview invitation 8/26.

Don't play with my heart! Submitted the 7th, completed the 14th, and silence...Thats a crazy quick turn around for ya, congrats!

You beat me to it! I'm on the same boat :*( But mine had to go through verification process so it wasn't complete until recently. Same GPA and MCAT, but my ECs aren't as strong. Been working in research, but out of bio field and nothing published, I'm more of a behind the scenes gal of the Lab. Not a ton of shadowing either. Siiiigghhh the wait continues! 🙂

Congrats @rorohix !!!

I have some questions for OOR applicants about the mission statement (got the email to submit one yesterday):

- What is it that they screen for now compared to the other screen to receive the secondary? Wouldnt it make more sense to just screen for service history/disavantaged status from the start to reduce the amount of OOR essays they must read, or do they send it to only some OOR students?

-How much did you write? I think my AMCAS and personal statement already outline fairly well why I'm interested in UW, so I'm trying to figure out how to organize my essay.

- Is there anything I should avoid talking about?

Thanks!
