2015-2016 Virginia Tech Carilion Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Anyone know how to go about withdrawing an acceptance? Should I just e-mail admissions?

Thank you!

Do you know if they specified a specific date?

No I don't know if they did but March 15, all schools must have given out acceptances equal to the number of seats in their class. So maybe March 15??

I think they said last week of March but they will post on SDN when they are ready to start giving out calls. Nothing to do but wait

I was hoping this would be the week they started making calls, but it's not looking good...

Looks like they always start the calls on Wednesdays ?

Hey everyone, just spoke with admissions. They said they are still meeting this week and their voting process would take place next week. They said they will send out acceptances for the last two interview dates the last week of march (mid week).

Did you ever find out how to withdraw your acceptance? I need to do the same with mine!

Talked to admissions. They said the voting was still taking place and wouldn't make calls until the end of this week or early next week. The waiting game continues...

Does anyone know if this school gives out merit scholarships with acceptance, afterwards, or at all?

EDIT: Never mind. I found my answers on previous pages, more or less. For anyone else curious:
They said they would include any scholarship offers in the official acceptance email youll get in a few days

Greetings:
The VTCSOM admissions committee is wrapping up their voting for acceptance group 3 (MMI weekends 5 & 6) this week. We anticipate starting our acceptance calls no later than Tuesday, April 5.

Hey just so you know I withdrew my acceptance as well just by sending an email and that's all it took; got my deposit back in a day

Are they done giving out acceptance calls? I noticed in the post by the VTC admin, they said they're starting to call for acceptance offers no later than today, but are they also concluding those acceptance calls today as well? Thanks!

By the way, congrats to all that have been accept! It's an excellent school!!

They are done, just received the continued to April email

The VTCSOM Admissions Office has completed all of our acceptance calls to applicants who participated in MMI weekends 5 & 6 (Feb 6 and Feb 20). Everyone remaining with an active application who interviewed during MMI weekends 1-6 should have received an email asking them to complete and return an application update form prior to our April committee voting. Acceptance calls from the April committee vote will be made during the week of April 25-29.

If they target 25 acceptances in each round any idea how many they will seek for April round, or is it just a voting of the wait list? Wondering if they will send out acceptances before the April 30 deadline, or use the matriculated numbers to calculate how many more to give out. I really thought my interview went well here but you just never know!

Does anyone know if there is a matchlist somewhere on the interwebs?

I don't think they will send out anymore acceptances before the April Vote, only because all the other acceptances followed the same schedule. Review and vote on 2 MMIs, send out calls on a specific day. Repeat. They said they send out a total of around 100? Acceptances depending on the year so if they have only sent out 75, maybe another 25 is to be expected.

In regards to the 100, I was referring to the absolute total.

Typical number of waitlist positions per cycle:
Varies

Waitlist Procedure and Information:
Applicants who interview but are not accepted initially will be evaluated again in April for possible selection. Qualified applicants will be either offered a seat in the class or will be put on an active waitlist until the incoming class matriculates.

Positions off waitlist (so after April voting?): 10

Oh no I just meant will they decide the April vote before or after they know how many have committed to their school on April 30th, not if they'll have two separate decisions. It seems that would give them a better estimate for how to decide for the target 42 and it might make acceptance less likely. Is that 10 positions off the wait list a definite number?

That is what is on MSAR

Anyone know if there is an accepted students Facebook or SDN group?? I'd love to start thinking about housing and looking for a roommate!

Congrats to those of you that have been accepted! Current student here (M2), if you have any questions, throw 'em out there. To the rest of you--don't give up hope yet! 🙂 Also...they will probably make an accepted students group in a month or so once all the acceptance dust has settled.

Questions for a current student at VTC:
1. Is the curriculum pass/fail for the first 1 (or 2) years?
2. Is there an option to watch lectures online?
3. Do you get placed into a LACE speciality or is there an option to choose a specific speciality? Do most people get placed in primary care clinic?
4. Does anyone do away rotations/medical service trips to domestic and abroad locations?

Thank you so much in advance for any help! Very excited about my acceptance here but want to make sure that I am choosing the right place for me!

1. Yes. Pass/fail is the best in my opinion--our class is very close and does not have a lot of gunner activity/uber-competitiveness because of it.
2. Yes
3. The whole point of LACE is to observe ambulatory (eg. outpatient, general) care and to experience parts of medicine that you might not choose if it were up to you. Therefore, our LACE doctors are chosen for us, and are often family practice, internal medicine, peds, or OB GYN. However, I also have friends that have gotten subspecialties, EM, etc. There is plenty of downtime to shadow any other specialty you want. I am a big fan of the way we do LACE and I have a great relationship with my mentor/learned a lot from her, even though I would never go into her specific field. In addition, we actively do patient interviews, physicals, and assessments during LACE as we learn them in class, and this is much easier to accomplish in a general practice setting than a subspecialty/surgery setting, for obvious reasons. In summary, the point of LACE is not to shadow a specific subspecialty you might be interested in--it is to get better at your general clinical skills, which is pretty vital.
4. Yes, we send many of our 4th years on away rotations just like any other school. We also have abroad rotations that are pretty popular. Some of the programs off the top of my head go to France, Brazil, South Korea, India, etc. Students have also gone on medical missions with doctors that work in our hospital.

Anyone received a financial aid package over email yet?

When are we supposed to receive financial aid packages? It's hard to make a decision on schools without having that information, and they make us decide this week!
Got mine last week as well...was in my spam folder initially...

Has anyone heard about the April voting results yet? They said they would contact this week! Fingers crossed!
