2016-2017 Creighton University Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Sorry to hear that 🙁 What did it say? Not from this school, but I received a rejection from another school that read "You will probably be able to identify areas of your application that need to be strengthened for future applications to be successful. As you plan for reapplication, it would be wise to work on an alternative plan". Way harsher than other rejection letters I have received haha

"The Committee on Admissions for the Creighton University School of Medicine has completed its review of your application for admission. After a thorough examination of your credentials, the Committee has found it necessary to decline your application.

We understand that you may experience disappointment upon hearing this news. However, a large number of applications, and their achievements, along with the limited size of the class have made this action necessary.

Thank you for your interest in seeking entrance into Creighton University SOM. We regret that our response to your request for admission could not have been favorable.

My best wishes for the successful realization of your professional school goals."

Complete 8/1/16. Rejected pre-II as well this morning. Got the same email. At least I know now.

for those of y'all that interviewed in mid January, didn't the dean of admissions say we would hear back this week?

He did! My "thank you for visiting" message is gone (letters still up), which - based on others' comments in these threads - seems to indicate we'll receive decisions in several days.

Both my letters and thank you are gone
Mine just disappeared too! and they were both there this morning. I wonder if we will have to wait all the way until monday

For those of you who have interviewed/accepted did you have extensive shadowing experience? I noticed they listed that as a good EC. I only have about 20 with an orthopod over the past summer. I am applying this year so would love some insight! Also haven't taken a physio or stats class in college (I took calc and was a biochem major) so also wondering how you guys have dealt with that? Thanks!

Hi! Clinical experience and shadowing is seen as a "requireiment" at any med school. I know that I read on another thread that people who apply to rush tend to have hundreds of clinical hours, and shadowing does count as a clinical activity. 20 is very few, even for schools that aren't as highly ranked as Creighton. I would suggest boosting those numbers out. Of course there are people with very few hours, but I would suggest boosting that as that is a common reason why people are rejected.

Sweet! I do have hundreds of clinical volunteering hours already over a 3 year span, but only 20 shadowing. I wasn't too sure how much shadowing is considered enough, I guess. Hope it wasn't too confusing!

Try to get 100!!! 🙂 I had a couple hundred hours extra as well based on hospital volunteering, etc. We don't have many physicians in my area so it was hard to get doctors to shadow but I mustered out 100 hours. You're doing great

For what it's worth, I had <70 hrs of shadowing of shadowing on my application alongside a good chunk of other clinical experiences. I think that it is a great opportunity to learn about the field of medicine and I would definitely try to get a little more shadowing, even just for personal learning and growth. I don't think there is a "magic number" of how many hours you have to put into shadowing or clinical experience to gain entrance into medical school though, it varies based on the applicant.

One other thing about the importance of shadowing is that it was a topic that has come up frequently at my interviews throughout this cycle, talking about my experiences with those doctors and what I was able to learn from it. It's just also a great experience to pull stories from when you are answering other indirectly related questions as well!

Best of luck heading into this upcoming cycle! Hope to see you in the 2017-2018 thread!

I submitted my secondary 10/10, considered complete 11/8. Haven't gotten an II, but also not a rejection. Hoping for the best! Anyone know when Its are no longer offered?
Mine was complete in October. I'm losing hope....:/

I had around 30 and was accepted

I wrote that I would continue to volunteering at the hospital until May of this year on the primary application. Can I send an update email saying I'm currently volunteering there? Since it's not new, does it hold no significance? Also, I'm in the process of submitting my paper. Should I let them know now or wait until it is submitted and accepted?

Does anyone know if there's an accepted students thread/group or a place to look at good housing options? I remember when I interviewed people mentioned something about a neighborhood where a lot of students lived with a gym and tennis courts, etc...

Unless I'm mistaken (maybe it only shows up after II) you upload updates through the portal and they have different categories (clinical volunteering, nonclinical volunteering, etc). I think you could add both those updates. For the volunteering one I would make it sound nicer/newer by describing what you're actually doing and what you've learned or gotten from the experience.

The admissions committee does seem to place an emphasis on shadowing, and also values shadowing physicians from multiple different specialties, especially primary care. While shadowing an orthopedic surgeon may be a great experience, that alone does not give you a good representation of medicine as a whole so it is good to experience multiple different fields as their day to day practice can be very different. Plus over half of any given class will likely eventually go into primary care so it's a good idea to get some exposure to it, and this is coming from someone who did not go into primary care. A great way to improve your application would be to try and get some extra shadowing with one or more primary care physicians and send Creighton an update about your experiences.

Apartment wise look into Broadmoor Apartments and Urban Village. These are probably the two largest apartment companies in Omaha. They both generally have nice, newly updated apartments for reasonable rent. There are definitely cheaper options out there, but these two have a good range of locations, apartment sizes, and costs. At the very least I'd check out their websites to get an idea of what price range vs amenities you should be looking for. The neighborhood you heard of was probably River Park (a Broadmoor owned apartment complex). It's actually in Council Bluffs just across the river, but is a very good apartment complex with several Creighton students about 10 min drive from campus and 15-25 min drive to Bergan depending on how I-80 is moving. They have a gym, multiple pools, sand volleyball, basketball courts, grills, etc, and most of our class BBQs/summer get-togethers were hosted there. If you are interested in River Park I'd suggest getting in contact with them sooner rather than later as they tend to fill up quickly in the summer. Another option is Midtown Crossing which will offer very nice, new apartments in a great location, but most likely with higher rent plus additional costs for parking. There are also several new apartments opening in the Midtown and Blackstone districts which seem nice driving by them. Generally cost of living is cheap and rent can be anywhere from $500 a month for a studio to $1300 a month for a two bedroom apartment and everything in between. Other people rent houses which I personally know nothing about, but they seemed to be happy with their decision as well.

F**K urban village! worst case of gentrification and monopolization of an area that i've seen in my lifetime. there's so many cheap apartments in omaha. please don't support such a horrible blight on the character of this city. there's nice new places downtown where a lot of creighton undergrads live, but not sure if these are too rowdy for grad students. seemed fine to me when i've visited. but also the No-Do area has some really new places (a little expensive).

Thank you both for your responses and I will definitely utilize the advice!

Could you provide any specific examples of places you do approve of/advise?

Does this school do any scholarships to "top" students?

That's amazing! Congrats 🙂

Thanks! So the one I got was a separate merit scholarship awarded by the admissions committee, but there's also a diversity scholarship that they award which has a separate application that they give you after you're accepted.

Okay, cool. Well, hopefully I get accepted here + some type of award. Currently accepted at some higher ranked schools, but their COA isn't really justifiable when Creighton has all the same opportunities as them.

Did you get it at the same time as your acceptance?

Just received my acceptance! So excited! Does anyone know if we have to accept our position within 10 days, or if we just have to pay an enrollment deposit to save our spot within that time?

I think both, if I remember correctly. Congratulations!!

Does anyone know when we get to select which campus we wanna do M3/M4 at and how that process is done?

When you select 'accept' your acceptance online it will ask you for your campus preference, Omaha or Phoenix. But I believe you can change it until partway through M1? not positive about that though

Has a waitlist already been formed (for the Phoenix campus)?

You are able to switch campus preference until May 15th, 2017, since you have been accepted before that date. I believe that is when they determine which is the over-filled and under-filled campus and start forming wait-lists/lotteries to determine who goes where. After matriculation there are a few ways that can justify switching between the two campuses (e.g. your significant other ends up going to the other one) and it's laid out in the student handbook you can find on the website with some digging.

I've also signed up for the Omaha campus because I don't like the idea of swapping cities after two years, I'd rather get to know the area and put some temporary roots down. Also, potentially better relationships with local docs maybe? I wish I could make it to the second look weekend in Phoenix to check it out, but it's way too much of an unknown for me to decide to choose it as my preferred campus.

Also, congratulations to the both of you!

Ah, so it is just a preference as of now but nothing is guaranteed until later on? I have a huge interest in being in Phoenix (family / wife there) so I'm trying to figure it out. I guess I should call and see how it works.

Also, thanks!!

Yes, you just put down you preference for now and the Administration works out who's going where over the summer before matriculation. Definitely call and get a better answer from the Admissions Office though, they will be much more helpful with these kinds of technical questions!

Can any current students say what a typical M1 week looks like? Assuming you don't attend the recorded lectures, how many hours per week are spent on lectures/activities that have mandatory attendance?

Also, does anyone know the 10th/90th percentile MCAT scores?

According to MSAR, for accepted students the 10th percentile MCAT is 28, 90th percentile is 35.
