2016-2017 University of Iowa (Carver) Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Question: I just got an out of state interview at Carver. The interview invite mentioned that Nov 18 was especially reserved for students interested in rural medicine and their CRISP program. If I go on that day I will be able to meet the deans / faculty and students associated with that program. Otherwise I can interview in early October.

I am very interested in this program and it ties in heavily with my application (rural medicine focus). So while selecting this date might go to show further interest, I am also going to talk a lot about this during my interview anyway.

Would it be better for me to wait and interview at that special date or will I gain a better chance for admission if I interview 5-6 weeks early?

(Sorry if this shows up at a random place on the thread. Feel like I screwed something up while posting this)

Woah! Congrats!!!

I'm hoping I get an interview here

Thanks!🙂
Hopefully they will send out more II soon. I think it's interesting how they have specific dates for different populations of students/tracks. For Oct 21st, it's underrepresented in medicine.

@ToshStorm

If you really want to do CRISP, then I think it would be worth it as you likely wouldn't have access to those students on the other interview days. If you prefer an interview decision sooner (maybe) then it may not be worth it. I am sure if you ask admissions they could get you a student contact to ask.

Iowa is taking an abnormally long time to import my letters from amcas.

Iowa has some of the friendliest admissions staff in the country. 🙂
If that seemed like I was knocking them I'm terribly sorry! Definitely wasn't trying to knock them at all.

Oh not at all. I was circuitously suggesting you call them with any questions, as they can probably help you.

Haha oh! Thank you for the suggestion! I guess I didn't realize that option. I submitted 8/30. Maybe I'll give it a few more days. But then again it seemed like most other people had a quicker turnaround.

Uploaded my letters just mere minutes after this conversation. Weird!

Lol no OOS.

I'm getting better at the waiting game though, so I can wait a couple more months until I hear back from this school and others.
My secondary for Iowa was complete August 15
Haha gotcha! Admittedly, the waiting is really hard for me. But I would've waited as long as needed to receive an II from Carver. Best of luck to you!

I've been complete since 8/04 and a friend just got an II who has been complete at Iowa for about a week, and here I am with radio silence. Gotta feel happy for them, but I feel like I just got punched in the gut and got the wind knocked out of me 🙁🙁🙁

Eh, don't sweat it. It all depends on IS/OOS. IS people can get a 1 day turn around. OOS, like me (and an alumni), can still be in the dark since 7/18.

I wouldn't worry too much. I know that's easier said than done, but it's still early. Like stated before the IS OOS business makes a difference too. Best of luck to you though! I'm sincerely hoping the best for you!

I am super excited to interview here. Can October come any faster?

Cool, thanks. I'm 511 and 3.70 with a thesis masters... I've been a researcher for years (3000+ hours) but have way less clinical experience. I'm nervous about my chances!
I don't think you should be! With that type of research experience Iowa would be silly to pass on you! Keep your chin up, it's still super early!

I'm in the same boat. Reapplicant, interviewed 2 years ago. Completed 8/24. IS, 1st author publication, been working at the UIHC for about 10 years (10,000+ hours patient experience). GPA 3.86, MCAT 513. Still waiting for an II.
Best of luck to you! I completed 8/25 so you'll have to let me know when you hear something!

I would be interested to know what they're looking at.. I'm a reapplicant and somehow I got an II without an MCAT in the last 3 yrs (score isn't released yet) so maybe they're not going on just stats? Anyway, don't worry too much about it.. the majority of IS get interviews!

Stupid question alert! Does anyone know the chances of an oos getting accepted post interview? They seem to be very accommodating to URMs for what I have seen so far... Hopefully this means they are favorable with the admissions decision, granted one is to kill it of course.

Last year, 323 OOS interviewed, 142 offered acceptances, and 46 matriculated. Not sure how many OOS applied.

hi guys,
is there a way to check on application status ?

Log into your secondary portal and check if it's completed or not. If you're still waiting for letters to be submitted, the status will remain incomplete until they are submitted to AMCAS and uploaded by Carver. I don't know of any other way to check.
