2016-2017 University of Miami (Miller) Application Thread

Has anyone else had this status for... let's guesstimate... 3 or 4 months?

'Your Application is currently under review by the Admissions Committee at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine.'

Had it since mid-Aug. Wish they just wouldn't have sent a secondary to people they know they likely will not finish scoring

do they send out waitlist notifications through mail or just acceptances? also, has anyone been rejected post-interview?

Do all accepted students get called on the phone or can you get an acceptance in the mail without a phone call?

So, just to clarify, there are three possible stages pre-II in the applicant status page:

1) 'Your Application is currently under review by the Admissions Committee at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine.'

2) 'Your Application to the UM Miller School of Medicine is complete and is currently being reviewed by the Admissions Committee.'

3) 'Your Application has been reviewed by the Admissions Committee at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine. Applicants will be invited to interview based upon their point total from the Committee review. Applications that have been reviewed and scored by the Committee will be considered for interviews during the entire interview cycle (September - April).'

Is this correct? Is there a consensus on on the timetable/results of any of these statuses? Opinions? Experiences?

Mine changed from Status 1 to Status 2 this week. I was complete sometime mid to late August.

Mine has been at 3 for months and no II. I personally do not think the statuses mean much

Mine was at the scored status from mid Aug until just a few weeks ago when I received an II! I was sure that I'd never get an II after seeing all of these people get IIs so quickly after their status changed. Don't give up hope!

Anyone have any anecdotes with being on the alternate list? Were you able to get off it early or was it towards the next year? Did you send a LOI/Updates (I think this one is obvious) Any general tips? This is my #1

Talked to 2 students on my interview about when they were accepted. Both were waitlited, one got in in January, the other in April.

To any current students, what is the student faculty relationship like. Are the professors open and warm towards students or do you feel like they are just there to lecture and then leave? Also some other schools pair students with a physician mentor, does UM have something like this beyond the physician preceptorship program which to my understanding is just a physician you work with a few times? And how do you guys feel about the pass/fail plus system. I don't fully understand how that works.

Only a first year, so not an extensive amount of experience, but I've felt that the student-faculty relationships are really what you make of them. The professors we've had so far really love teaching, I think, and if it's a subject you're interested in, are absolutely willing to talk to you about it, give wisdom, etc. From what I understand, we will get a faculty mentor in the second year. The American Women's Medical Association is also looking to set up a female mentorship program for interested students too. There is no dearth of mentorship opportunities in every subject, if you take some time to seek them out. If you've interviewed, hopefully your tour guides/students you ate lunch with emphasized the "Miller family", cheesy as it is. I have not yet met a person affiliated with the school who is indifferent to our success. Our school and our hospital look good when the students do well, and everyone works hard to accomplish that.

As for grading: we're on a semi-true pass/fail system. It's only P/F (no high pass or whatever), but we do get number grades at the end of each module we do. We also have access to histograms detailing how the rest of the class did. All this information is also included on our transcript (P/F, grade % and the histogram). I personally like the system; it's nice to sometimes sit back and aim for a pass on a test if I have a lot of other stuff going on in a given week. Hopefully that answered some questions you have?

I believe all accepted students are called, all waitlisted students are emailed. One person on here earlier received a mailed rejection post-interview, but that's really the exception.

I interviewed in early February, was waitlisted mid-March and accepted early May. I sent 1 update letter in the meantime, detailing a new publication that I had.

I can't pinpoint anything that would like "get you in", you know? Don't send an update 1 week after you've been waitlisted, make sure that there's something substantive to update, and definitely express interest. What specifically about the school did you like? If you can name something you're looking forward to doing here, I imagine that would look really good. And if you have ties to the Miami area (especially if you're not from FL), that could go over well. Schools are sometimes worried that a student won't come if they're accepted, even for a geographical reason like "well she's from LA so she'll want to stay in California", so anything to let them know they're your #1 and you'll def attend (but maybe don't come across as desperate) is pretty much on point..

did anyone get anything in the mail who got a decision from the Nov 2nd batch? They said they were sending letters in the mail last week!

So I've gone from status 1 to status 3 in less about 3 business days. Anybody neurotic that can trace that to something? Still reading into it too much? Still too excited to think about any little thing that can distract me from DJT?

EDIT: mine actually says "Your application has been reviewed by the Admissions Committee at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine. Applicants will be invited to interview based on their evaluation score from the Admissions Committee review. You will be contacted by email if you are selected for an interview. Interview invitations are extended between August and March."

I've had status three for months, was complete in the July/August timeframe.

I've also been at status #3 for almost 3 months. At this point I'm just glad I've been reviewed already.

I added an edit. Which of the wordings do you have? What I received or the #3 in my quotation?

Took me a while to even figure out what the difference between the two is -- they're pretty similar. I have the status that you actually received, the one at the bottom of your post.

II today for MD/PhD! 😀

For those of you wondering about the timeline of the statuses, I just checked the portal yesterday and I was still at status #2 (complete, under review), so I'm not sure there's really an order to them. I was complete the first week of October, and that was the only status I ever saw.

^^^^wondering the same.... and current students in house?!?!

Interviewed last week, status changed today to "A decision has been made...contact within 7 days".

II!! Interview for Both MD and MD/MPH programs! Btw guys, consideration for these programs are separate. One could be admitted into the MD/MPH but not the MD. This is one of my top choices, I'm so excited to be getting some love. *In case you couldn't tell by my username*

do you know when does a person must decide their preference for a particular program, if accepted into both? is there a deadline?

Congrats btw!

Status changed to "A final decision has been reached..." today. I guess some of us are going to hear back tomorrow.

Did you receive an email or did you just check the portal randomly to find that your status changed?

I might be mistaken, but I thought Dr. Gervais said there was a piece of paper included in our interview packets of when the admissions committee meetings were; except I can't find that piece of paper.

It's in the Hub app!
