2016-2017 University of Miami (Miller) Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Also, did they email you when your application had been scored or did it just show up in the portal?

Been complete since 7/11 and scored since early august. Thoughts on emailing the committee? I previously spoke with a diversity dean before applying

Interviewed late september and havent heard anything since. Tried calling but just being told to wait. Is anyone in this situation as well? any input is helpful.

It looks like the next decision day is next Wednesday, so you will probably hear back then!

i hope so, i think i interviewed with the first wave people so i was fearing the worst by now but maybe committee hasnt met yet

No they don't email, you have to check your portal to know.
To add onto this, and I don't mean to be harsh to anyone, but it really doesn't matter for your purposes whether you're "scored" or "under review". All it means is that they've figured out where you are on their list of potential interviewees. If you're near the top, you'll get a call soon. If you're not, then you might as well still be "under review" because you're probably not hearing anything from them anytime soon.

rejected via snail mail.

so that's what they meant by wait for it.

For everyone here who is a current U Miami student on the admissions committee, do any of you know how our applications are prioritized for scoring? Do they do it by MCAT, GPA or a combination of both?

there is a previous thread (I think from last years) where a student on the committee said that were scored out of order because its just the way the computer sends the apps to them

Anyone who interviewed Sep 30th get the "final decision" status change yet?

I have. Does that just mean a decision has been made, whether yes/no/waitlist?
I'm not sure, mine still says the old "your app will be reviewed a final time....". When did yours change?

Do you have any idea why you were rejected? I agree it's rare to get an outright rejection. Just curious...

Thank you for your offer! I will get in touch with you shortly.
I'm in the MD program - feel free to send questions my way! I've heard mixed reviews about the MD/MPH curriculum (someone just tonight was complaining about a lack of pharmacology) but without being in the program I can't say.

If the MPH is something you can't live without (or you're really on the fence), UM has a 5-year program that you apply into at the end of the freshman year. It will require an additional year for the MPH work (done after 4th year, I believe), but you get to spend your clinical years in Miami at Jackson Memorial Hospital which was a major factor for some of my friends who were considering the 4-year program vs. that option.

The current first year MD/MPH's have more pharmacology in the curriculum now based on prior years' feedback. We also have more problem based learning than the regular MD track which is helpful in solidifying most needed concepts. I've also heard good reviews about the rotations in Palm Beach. There are both pros and cons in either program. It all comes back to whether you want the MPH and also whether you like learning in groups for the dual program.

Thank you, it's good to know about the option. Will message you in a few days

That's great to hear!

UM overall is very responsive to students' feedback. They're also adjusting the microbio curriculum for the MDs because of things the second years said.

Yea, if you guys are concerned about where you do your clinical years (MD track vs md/mph), while it's mandatory that you do your 3rd year at the regional campus, you have the opportunity to do electives back at main campus during your fourth year. The pro to doing required clerkships at regional campus is that the attending/resident/medstudent ratio is super low compared to UMH/Jackson where you have students at every level across different professions all trying to do some, any, and everything. I've also heard that those who train at the regional campus feel much more prepared and confident since they have had the chance to essentially do more things when it comes to "bread and butter" medicine. Obviously, the con is having to relocate and sustain a small level of discontinuity with faculty/researchers.

Your clinical years are what you make them no matter where you are but if I can get in the action instead of being on the outskirts then sign me up.

And either way, our match lists are both really great; you'll get a good education regardless 😉

Hey guys - does anyone have a "final decision has been reached...contact the office if you don't receive a telephone call, email or letter within 7 days?"

Anyone hear anything?

Crickets.

I thought for sure this forum would have folks excited about an acceptance call today. My status shows A Final Decision has been made, so I wonder if that decision is Wait List. Did anyone get put on the wait list in October when their status said "A Final Decision..."?
