2016-2017 Vanderbilt University Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Anyone have any idea how many they accept? I know the class size is 88, but how many they actually accept. I interviewed recently and it was unbelievable and definitely my first choice!

Wow so we have a really good shot it seems. I wonder if that includes people accepted off the waitlist?

It probably does, but the interviewee pool is ridiculously competitive (after 2 committee screenings) and that's ~200 rejections, so I'm not holding my breath

Interviewing Monday here. I interviewed at Harvard a few weeks ago, and coming back to research Vanderbilt again, I am struck by how similar the curricula of these two schools appear. Can anybody speak to differences in the curricula/school philosophy/feel of the school?

Thanks!

One big difference is having 3 clinical years at Vandy.

That's what they have at Harvard now, too. It seems VERY similar. 1 year preclinical, 1 year required clinicals, step, 2 years electives, required research for a few months at the end.

As opposed to most, I actually like the cold, so on that front Harvard (and good chowder) might be better. Especially is Nashville is anything like, say, Huntsville, AL. Don't know if I'd live through the muggy, hellish summer...

Oh I missed that. Nice.

I'm very excited for my upcoming interview here! But also super nervous.

Personally, I really like their emphasis on student wellness. Check out this paper for some more info about their wellness philosophy!

Also, do they do any class ranking? As I recall, preclinical is P/F, but clinical wasn't, so I was curious if they ranked or did AΩA.

Hey Neuroguy, current VMS1 here again. I can't speak for Harvard but this is the 4th year of Vandy's 1 year preclinical curriculum so there's been a lot of time for all the kinks to get worked out. If a 1 year curriculum would be too difficult or stressful was one of my worries before I chose Vandy, but it was nice to know I wouldn't be one of the first classes to go through it.

On the P/F front, the first two years (pre-clinical and clerkships) are P/F and unranked. After that you get into your immersions/electives and those are graded. However, there is still no ranking but there is AOA (which I think is decided by your peers and professors).

Feel free to post or PM any other questions you guys have!

Thank you! Especially for taking time out during your block exams!

And for everybody else, if you're wondering, that'd the end of interviews! So now we just play the waiting game until they've gone back through everybody by the end of the month. And remember, the purposefully under-send acceptances at the end of the month, so don't count yourself out too soon if you're not one of those first ones in February. Good luck, everyone! My fingers will certainly be crossed for a while...

So, will they outright deny anyone later this month? Or does everyone just go straight to the wait list?

From what I was told by one of the admissions staff, everyone pretty much goes to the waitlist.

Awesome thanks. You would assume they only interview people they would want to actually go to the school seeing as the vetting process is so stringent pre-interview.

Next week is unofficially "mid Feb". Let the countdown to disappointment and self doubt begin!

Is it appropriate to contact a school to see if they will match a competing scholarship?

I really liked Vanderbilt and they offered me a 75% scholarship, but I'm not sure I can justify going there at the cost of $50,000. I've gotten two full tuition scholarships from arguably (U.S. News) higher ranked schools, but I didn't like them as much. When would be the best time to approach them about this be?

you're going to ask formore than 75% scholarship? Wow such balls muy cajones

That's what I was thinking, but should I wait until its closer to the multiple acceptance deadline? I don't think I could commit right now if the offer given, but in a month I could send it with a letter of intent and mean it.

Last year it came out on a Friday, I think the 19th...so maybe this Friday?

So, are we going with the idea that calls are going out Friday? I read in last year's thread that the Friday calls were mainly to people with competing offers and the rest of the calls went out later in the week. Thoughts?

So I take it no one was called today? Crossing fingers for next week!

I called today and they said that they "don't know when calls will go out bc it depends on when the admissions committee makes their decisions". I think this means that we've got a long wait ahead of us folks.
