I unfortunately can't really say since I'm a first year. Most of the second years that I know just seem to add in board study starting winter break/spring break or somewhere in between, and take the hit in class grades accordingly. Since boards >>> preclinical grades I think most are happy to end up with a higher board score and lower class grade.

Yes. We are required to take comlex by mid-July but most of us are shooting to take both exams in June and get a solid month off. The required classes don’t stop until mid-May, but they start backing off the schedule by early/mid-April depending on your last name group.

1. No there is not a required OMM rotation. You are however required to write 3 OMM SOAP notes each semester 3rd and 4th year.

2. Yeah that sounds about right. I think they shortened second year a bit so now they end in early to mid May and you have until mid July to take COMLEX. We weren't officially free from the school until late May with my class. We got that ish changed.

I did see that, but so far no one else has reported their decision on SDN. Wondering if maybe the committee didn't have time to review all candidates from our interview day?

Safe to say so. I interviewed earlier in Feb and have not heard back yet.
 
Question for current DMU students -- do many first-years live alone or with a roommate? For those who live alone, do you prefer this personal space or do you find it to be lonely at times?

I'd say it's maybe like 70/30 for people with roommates vs without. I live by myself, and that's something I've always preferred. I like to do things at my own pace, and that can cause friction with a roommate. I also have trouble studying when there's too much background noise, so living alone was the best option for me.
It does get lonely sometimes, but to be honest, med school is just kind of a lonely experience. Roommate or not, time to socialize in medical school is hard to come by, so I can't say for sure if having one would really help much. The silver lining to that is that if you're going through a hard week, everyone else probably is too, so there's no shortage of people to commiserate with, haha.

My advice is to live alone the first year if you can afford it. A large portion of my classmates who roomed with other classmates first year had horrible experiences. People seem very different in the beginning of school before the real stress hits and some initially ok roomie situations turn ugly, fast. You’ll have plenty of time to make friends and room with them second year if you want to. All of my friends (both guys and girls) who had roommates first year, now live alone for second year (aside from a few people).

I decided to live alone first year and it was a wise decision. You can come home from school and de-stress without anyone in your space. If you make an effort to be social at the beginning of school, you’ll likely find some friends so you won’t be lonely.
 
Has anyone heard today? Seems like most decisions have been going out on Thursdays.

It should be in the start of your first year, yes.

The current first years have theirs at the same time of their rite of passage ceremony at the end of second year, but I think that's only for our year due to some construction that was going on at the time that we would have had our ceremony.

Depends on the interviewer. Mine was very Q and A but my primary interviewer did not speak English as a first language. I could see others having more conversational experiences

As far as I know the list isn't out, but I'm keeping an eye out for it. I have heard someone matched gas at Hopkins, and several ACGME programs in FM, peds, etc. Cleveland Clinic and Mayo were also mentioned, but I don't know which specialties.

My interview was conversational from the start (which was a huge relief), but be ready to answer the typical interview questions (why doc, why dmu, why DO...) as well as any experiences you've discussed on your application. Luckily, SDN hit this one on the head for my situation and it really did feel like the questions were more of a way to get a conversation started rather than a standard interview. Best of luck! Oddly enough... accepted, but won’t be attending. It was a poor decision for them to w/l me despite being recognized as a wonderful candidate... They could have locked me down with a deposit.

But off to allopathic land I go.

Congrats on the acceptances. DMU is flooded with great applicants each year and so sometimes great potential students may get passed over.

To everyone applying, don’t let med schools passing you up (via a waitlist or rejection decision) make you think less of yourself. Sure, evaluate potential flaws but don’t tell yourself you suck and are hopeless. I have some awesome classmates off the waitlist (several of them are way better than some classmates who got straight in)...just the luck of your interview day. If you’re determined, you can make it happen!

Congratulations on the acceptance to DMU and on the allopathic acceptance! Either way, it's a compliment for your hard work! I hope I get that spot!!! I'm so eager to go here! I got the same two e-mails for waitlist and high priority that you received, so maybe good things will come my way soon... praying! Did you send an update letter in between? Also, what were your stats? Thanks for sharing with all of us!

I haven't seen it anywhere yet or anything but I know of some pretty good ones. Just FYI though guys, most people who come here seem to self-select for primary care, at least from people I've talked to. Definitely not everyone, but a large portion has said primary care and that is usually reflected in the match. There are signs everywhere saying we're the "#1 producer of family practice docs" or something like that. Also, most people seem to stay in the midwest from what I've seen in the past as well. But if I see it, I'll throw it up here. They usually put it on the website too with a map and stuff.

Don't get me wrong people go to some pretty solid residencies so if you bust your butt when ya get here I don't think you'll be at any more disadvantage than any other established DO school student, contrary to some of the nonsense you see on here about DO bias and the 'sky is falling' attitude

No I mean DO...there is still the DO bias in the higher up places (but from what I've been told it isn't as much as it used to be). Until the merger happens, and who knows what goes on after that, MD students still have an advantage for competitive specialties

People also seem to forget that the Internal Medicine residency is the gateway into multiple specialties (oncology, cards, gastro, etc.)

At my interview session they estimated they had accepted 300 students for 220 spots. I figure that will leave at least some spots for wait listed applicants because most student who apply to DO use it as a back up and prefer MD.

Not sure how many wait-lists you've been placed on and I know it can feel very disappointing, but many placed on wait-lists get offered a spot and some as late as May/June. So stay positive and keep plugging away. Getting on a wait-list has lots of potential for actually getting a spot and the more wait-lists, the better. Still the numbers game...
