2017-2018 University of Iowa (Carver)

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Good luck to all those waiting to see if they get to wait two more months.

Barring bad circumstances, does anyone get rejected before the final pool decisions? I guess they give all post-interview apps a very thorough review then :O

Final pool here as well. OOS.

Any idea if we can email letters of intent to the admissions office? It specifically says on the update portal not to upload letters of intent.

It says on the portal not to email anything to them as they cannot update the application for you. Either way, I think your intent is assumed based on your application and lack of withdrawal.

A letter of intent lets them know they're my top choice and that I would attend if accepted over any other school. It is definitely not assumed.

Are there people who don’t get final
Is there a waitlist right now that isn’t the final pool- or would that come out after the final pool?

I sort of get your point. But from their perspective theres two things there: 1) They are operating under the assumption that since you applied and have not withdrawn that you would attend if accepted. 2) It will not increase your chances of being admitted. They generate a score for the final pool applicants based on a graded scale of several categories. Letter of intent is not a category and won't impact their decision, hence why they specifically ask people not to do it.

Fair enough. I guess I'll just wait until March for their decision, and if I am waitlisted then I'll send a letter of intent.

They do not accept letters at any point. If you're waitlisted, you will know your exact number on the portal. That cannot be changed with any updates or letters.

Oh, interesting. I have a friend at Carver who is a current 3rd year medical student who told me to send the letter of intent. Maybe it was different 4 years ago when he was applying.

Can someone explain a bit about how the final pool works? Is there just one final pool, or are there two: one for IS and one for OOS? If there is only one, do they rank IS and OOS the same, or is there preference given to IS like there would be for the other aspects of the application process?

I would guess OOS and IS is still separate just like the initial admissions review.

Interviewed today. Scared because i thought it was bad. Worst one. Was very intimidating.

I believe final pool is all the same but they keep IS and OOS separate. But they will release verdicts all the same day for both groups. There are waitlists for each group so there is no competition between these applicants. And I believe that the OOS waitlist goes to 100 and IS goes to 50. Hope that helps.

Any body know how many people of the final pool get accepted/rejected/waitlisted?
I thought during the interview day that it was said that about 60% of applicants come from the final pool but don’t quote me on that. Not sure if this applies to both IS and OOS either.

That 60% is somewhat comforting. Thanks!

60% of matriculating students come from the final pool or 60% of interviewees are placed into the final pool or?.. Sorry haha can you be more specific?

Not to sway your nerves but it could’ve been 60% is filled during rolling admission and

I believe I heard somewhere (not sure where, maybe the interview day, maybe on SDN somewhere, maybe a current or fellow med student) that 40 of the 100 IS seats are filled duringtg rolling admissions. The other 60 seats have to be filled during the final pool.

I think your about right. I remember Kathi saying about half of IS acceptances go out during rolling admissions and the rest during final pool period. Inevitably, some will decline so it probably equals about 60 or so from the final pool/waitlist.

It's the whole final pool thing. Basically, if you're not accepted before the date they gave (usually around Jan-Feb) you'll be placed in the final pool. My understand is that around 2/3 of the class comes out of the final pool. Class size of 150. I'm sure someone can correct me if I'm wrong about that 2/3 estimate. But, I'm sure the majority of acceptances come out in March. Based on SDN, acceptances are scarce now relative to march.
I'm a student at ccom and this is what I've been told.

Edit: the ratio could be different, although that's what I've been told, but I can assure that majority of the class comes from the final pool.

Bumping now that it is final pool time

For IS, I'd guess that around 60-70 acceptances will come from the final pool and 50 spots will be on a ranked waitlist (which around 25 will eventually be accepted). If they interviewed similar numbers to last year (320) minus those already accepted in rolling admissions, there would be around 280 of us in the IS final pool, assuming that nobody who interviewed has been denied before the final pool. So from my assumptions, I think we technically have around a 35% chance of being accepted (either straight up or off the waitlist) within the Final Pool. Hopefully we're all in that 35%!

Best of luck to all of you, Carver really is a fantastic place. I know the final pool can be frustrating, but hang in there!
Any OOS observations/ stats you’d know much about? Thanks for being the token med student in this thread.

I'm not sure what you all know already, but about 1/3 of the class is OOS. I'm not sure when most of those acceptances (OOS) come out. I could ask around and gauge some OOS friends.

I can tell you that all of my OOS friends love Iowa City and this school. The weather is a little shell-shocking, depending on where you're from, of course. But, for the most part they all seem to love it here. Iowa City really is a unique place for being in the middle of Iowa.

Does anyone know what the other 5 major categories are?

I heard this in the past, I think it's something like the following, but each has a percentile rating that varies (i.e. Interview might be worth more than PS/Secondaries)

1) MCAT
2) sGPA/cGPA
3) Clinical Experience
4) Interview
5) Personal Statement/Secondaries
6) Volunteering

Regarding the grade upgrades, can anyone verify if this is the right choice (0.7 sem or 1.0 Qtr) for a course taken in one quarter?
I'm a bit thrown off because of the other options (such as 4.7 sem or 7.0 Qtr) cuz I can't think of situations other than 1 Qtr or 1 sem being used
