2017-2018 University of Iowa (Carver)

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Can I ask what you had to work on that improved your application from getting rejected last year to accepted during rolling admissions this year? Congrats!

Thanks a lot! They asked me to do more patient experience work, a little more volunteer work, and some more leadership activities. It wasn’t anything too crazy, but that’s what I worked on all last year, so it worked out okay!

Anyone know about this shuttle service from Heartland Inn to CCOM? Is it worth the hassle or better to take your own car?

I stayed at the Heartland before my interview! Full disclosure, I did not actually take the shuttle because my interview day was SUPER warm and I was antsy, so I actually walked from the hotel-->interview (it was super easy and a pretty quick walk). But even with a car, I had 0 plans to drive to Carver from the hotel.

The shuttle seemed to run efficiently and the front desk staff was extremely familiar with students there for interviews. They told me that the shuttle could drop you off at the appropriate place, and they give you a wealth of information about getting to Carver, including a number to call if anything goes south. They seemed to have a tried and true system for getting interviewees where they need to go.

Good luck on your interview!

Take the shuttle, I think parking is more of a hassle. The shuttle makes trips every 30 mins if I remember correctly and he drops you off right at the entrance cuz he knows.

Where my 11/15 peeps at? They said decisions would be coming out mid-December.

I'm honestly a wreck, I loved this school and can't wait anymore.

The director of admissions said at my interview on 12/1 that they were WAY WAY behind. I'm sure the holidays didn't/won't help. I know it doesn't help the anxiety any but it is at least something more than silence.

Take the shuttle. Parking in the Newton Road ramp will cost $20+ for the day. If you're up for an adventure, there is a bus stop across the street from Heartland Inn at the Softball Complex. Cambuses are free and there are two Cambus routes that stop there. Research Park stops in front of MERF and Hawkeye Interdorm stops at the Hospital. You should be able to catch one of them every 15-30 minutes.

Congrats! Just curious why is it a top choice?

Surprisingly strong global health program, lots of research opportunities, school focus on education (ive heard good things about Iowas focus on med students and residents), and friendliness of the people there. My selfish reasons are its a B1G university and they have a [insert sport] club team, plus 2 of my mentors spent time there and highly recommended it.

Anyone who interviewed in early November not heard back also? Getting kinda antsy, cause I loved interviewing here!

AHHH ACCEPTED! This is one of my top choices sO IM PSYCHED! brb crying

oos, interviewed 11/15

Congrats!! It's my top choice and I was also on 11/15. Really hoping to find out soon.

Did you get the email first or were you checking the portal?

Anyone interview mid October and still not hear back? Should I email them?

They don't review in chronological order, so it is possible that they haven't gotten around to you yet. If they have reviewed your application, they may have decided to place you in the final pool, and you won't find out until the middle of March if that's the case. But you'll know in January/February if you're final pool or rejected.

I'm in the same boat and haven't heard yet. I keep telling myself to be patient.

The advice here is in line with what they said at my interview in early November. We are likely going into the final pool, which as I understand it consists of them ranking each applicant and then pulling them from top to bottom to fill their class as people accept offers from other schools etc.

Not necessarily... they make acceptances till the end of January. They obviously rank interviews in some order and I'm sure having lower stats like myself plays a role in when we get looked at. Can you clarify what they said at your interview? They usually only tell January interviewees that they're going right into the final pool

Yes they make acceptances until the end of January but I think those are likely going to those people with later interviews. If its been a while since someone's interview I think its safe to assume they're headed for the final pool.

For those of us still without an II, is it safe to assume we're rejected based on all the talk about January?

I think the odds are long at this point but I wouldn't say you're rejected until they tell you they are. Plenty of people have interviewed and been accepted to medical school after the new year.

You’re definitely not rejected yet, I don’t know what interview dates were offered recently but I’m sure there are still some left.

Show up early. Have fun. Know that the interview is short. Do your best because this is a freaking awesome place to be. OOS 11/13 and waiting to hear back yet.
+1 to this place is freaking awesome. But for real, don't be nervous. Just be yourself and interact with your peers. Check out some of the interview feedback on this site.

Congrats to everyone who has been accepted already and to those waiting to hear some good new good luck! I was wondering if anyone has heard of the Iowa PREP program (post-baccalaureate research education program) and if they have heard any success stories from this. Please do let me know. Feel free to message me.

Are there any pre and/or post interview events or social gatherings for interviewees?

I doubt it, but are all the people who got accepted posting it here?
It seems like they're going at an extremely slow pace and haven't been hading out acceptances much, unless people are not posting their acceptances here.

Not everyone uses SDN. I can confirm that many from my class do not. Doesn't necessarily mean that this year is the same, but don't be discouraged. For example, in April around 100 acceptances are given out, and I'd say maybe 10-15 people post here that day.

100 seems like a lot to give out that late. Do you happen to know estimates for what they give out in January and march?

It's the whole final pool thing. Basically, if you're not accepted before the date they gave (usually around Jan-Feb) you'll be placed in the final pool. My understand is that around 2/3 of the class comes out of the final pool. Class size of 150. I'm sure someone can correct me if I'm wrong about that 2/3 estimate. But, I'm sure the majority of acceptances come out in March. Based on SDN, acceptances are scarce now relative to march.

How do you know about that 2/3 estimate? For some reason I was under the impression that it was much lower than that, since they've been offering acceptances from October-January.

I think that number is closer to about 125 because they offer 100 acceptances between rolling admissions and the final pool, and then the waitlist usually moves about 20-30 spots.

I'm a student at ccom and this is what I've been told.

Edit: the ratio could be different, although that's what I've been told, but I can assure that majority of the class comes from the final pool.

Awesome- that's good news! Thank you so much!

I got my $50 travel reimbursement in the mail. It was very clear from the outside envelope that it was not any type of admissions thing, which was nice. OOS 11/13 Interview and no news since. I saw on here an 11/15 OOS person was accepted awhile ago.

I had some time so I figured out what the remainder of the cycle for CCOM will be like. Please correct me if any of this seems off!

Pre II:
Unless you’re given an II very soon, it looks like the cycle may be coming to a close. Last year, the pre-II rejections were sent out the 4th Tuesday in January (1/24/17), which would be the 23rd of January this year.

Post II:
Looks like there are two real options for us now, either get accepted in the next 2-3 weeks of rolling admissions or be placed in the final pool. Final pool notifications go out typically the 3rd Wednesday or Thursday in January (last year was 1/19/17), which would put it to be 1/17 or 1/18 this year.

Typically final pool decisions are made on a Tuesday or Wednesday before March 15th, last year they were made on 3/8/17, so likely this year they would be around March 6th or 7th. The potential outcomes:
1) Accepted: This can be identified by the Rural tab on the portal popping up on the application portal
2) Denial
3) Waitlist: There are separate waitlists for both IS and OOS applicants. The IS is 50 spots and OOS is 100 spots. OOS waitlist spots seem to be strange in how many end up matriculating to CCOM and it has been as low as 4 and as high as 90 in years past. IS is a little more consistent, here’s the past few years:
2016- 19 spots
2015 - 31 spots
2014 - 24 spots
2013 - 28 spots
2012 - 31 spots
2011 - 24 spots

Hopefully this helps someone else! Good luck to everyone!

Last year’s IS waitlist movement was 29, if you wanted to know.

Have any 11/20 interview day or later heard anything yet?
