2017-2018 University of Pittsburgh

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Accepted off the WL just now! Received an email and my portal changed!
I just got this app today, and don’t really understand how this all works yet, but when you got the letter for WL did you click option A -“guaranteed admission to spring 2019 and waitlist for fall 2018” or did u click b-“waitlist only. No guarantee for spring ??”

Hmmm, this is the thread for University of Pittsburgh medical school. Are you possibly talking about the undergrad? I could be wrong, but this doesn't sound like a med school WL letter.

Why is waitlist movement so much later this cycle than others?

Could be due to the new waitlist system (no tiers), other top schools taking their time with decisions/financial aid, or a combination. No one really knows. I’m sure we’ll hear end of March and definitely in April when you can only hold one acceptance.

You can hold multiple acceptances until the last day of April. So, we should see much more movement early May. But definitely some movement in Mar. and April.

Any Veterans here that have been accepted and planning/thinking of going to Pitt? I'm an MS3 Veteran here and willing to answer any questions as well as try to help the transition to Pittsburgh/PittMed. Just PM me!

This might be a stupid question but are parents invited for second look weekend as well? Some schools have specifically asked about family members but when I RSVP'd to Pitt's SL I don't remember anything about additional guests

Do you think the lack of WL movement posted on SDN is representative of the actual WL movement? Is PITT waiting longer this year to accept off the WL or are people just not posting....this wait is agonizing

idk there is like 280 people in the second look facebook group so maybe they accepted more people outright this year therefore less WL movement?

Pitt ranked in the top 10 in 5 out of 7 specialities on USNR(surgery, psychiatry, anesthesia, OB/GYN, and pediatrics) that's pretty crazy

Aside from the welcome address by the dean on Saturday morning, all second look events are reserved for prospective students. Even though the formal second look program is just for students, it's still great to have family/friends/SO with you to explore Pittsburgh and get a feel for the city.

Pitt went from #17 --> #14 on the USNWR rankings this year if it means anything to anyone. However, USNWR changed their methodology to account for more research $$$'s. Pitt is usually in the top 5 of schools receiving funds from the NIH, so the methodology change most likely explains the small bump in list rank. Additionally, it appears their "residency director rating" is unchanged, indicating the school did not receive a bump in overall reputation.

Regardless, you probably shouldn't be using the USNWR to choose a medical school. I only say this to state Pitt remains a solid school and is top 20, and continues to be recognized as such.
It actually just went from tied at #15 with Chicago to #14. Not sure where you got #17 from.

It seems like a lot of schools are taking their time with WL movement... which sucks!

Damn! That's a lot of people. Hopefully there are a lot of current students in that number.

About 25-30% of group members are current students. (We’re there to answer questions and such). Also some people usually dont leave the facebook group after joining, even if they decide that they are no longer considering Pitt.
But traditionally, Pitt has been very conservative about how many initial offers they make

Not sure if this has been done on this thread yet (also probs a little late to the party), but I can answer PSTP-related questions. Feel free to PM.

FYI, this year's graduating PSTP class as a shameless plug:
  • Orthopedic Surgery, NYU
  • Internal Medicine, University of Michigan
  • Pediatrics, UPMC
  • Ophthalmology, University of Utah
  • Internal Medicine, Johns Hopkins
  • Neurological Surgery, UPMC
  • Plastic Surgery, UPMC

For accepted students, when you log into your portal, does it display information like your not accepted?

Yep same here! It seems like quite a few of us have it, so it's probably just a glitch on their end 🙂

I know this was discussed earlier in the thread, but I saw some conflicting information that never really reached a consensus. Does Pitt offer merit aid, or only need-based aid?

I called the admissions and finaid office recently and they said they only offer need-based scholarships. There website confirms this as well: "Institutional resources consist of a limited number of need-based scholarships and need-based, low-interest loans." Maybe this is a new policy implemented in the last year or two?

Hmmmm... interesting. I just rechecked the financial aid website and it does look like they have changed it to only list need-based scholarships. I'm fairly certain that they had mentioned merit-based on previous iterations of the site. If they did make a change regarding merit-based scholarships it would have been in the past year as I know of at least one person who received merit-based aid last year. My apologies if I provided erroneous information.

I thought the same thing! If you go to the application status tab, it should say Admitted/Complete at the top. It's pretty small font so it's easy to miss.

Speaking of financial aid, did the admissions office ever confirm they received your W2/federal tax returns? I did not get a response to mine.

I called them after I sent mine in and they said that they received it but they don't send confirmation unless there's something you missed.

Same here. It doesn’t seem there is any kind of automatic confirmation once they’ve received everything.

Has anyone received any additional emails or information about Second Look? I got the initial email and signed up through their online form, but I haven’t received any further information about any of the sessions yet. I am on the second look fb group, but it doesn’t seem like anything official has been posted on there either.

Nope, have not received anything either! I vaguely remember the online form said they would send more info a week before? Unfortunately can't see the form anymore, but I'm pretty sure they'll send out something soon 🙂 It's almost April!

There should be an itinerary posted on the second look facebook group!

On the waitlist and still waiting to here about any movement. Does anyone know about recent or potential future waitlist movements in April? Haven't heard a peep about it since the beginning of March. Historically are waitlist movements done in waves or on an individual basis?

WLer here too. Historically there has been WL movement either late Feb/early March and then after April 30th. I think they usually occur in waves but that's just based on SDN posts.

I also know a girl who received merit and need based aid.
I’d like to know as well... also, anyone know how generous the aid is here, considering it’s only need-based?
