2018-2019 Hofstra University

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
we had to sign an NDA unfortunately so nothing too specific, but it was a mix of MMI (5 stations-6 min) and Traditional/Conversational (2 stations-14 minutes)

Thanks for the info, and I was actually curious about those 14 min stations. Are they like traditional interviews where they ask questions about you or do you still get an MMI prompt, just with a more conversational and longer time frame?

I understand if you can't answer that but I appreciate your help!

traditional no prompts

For those that interviewed: What was your general impression of the interview? Stressful? Difficult? Laid back?

current MS1 checking in - if anyone has any questions about the curriculum, vibe, or anything specific about the school feel free to ask

Hey! Can you give us a brief overview about what drew you to the school, what you’ve ended up liking and disliking, and the general vibe of your class?

fyi first acceptances won’t come out until mid dec, not mid nov as someone posted earlier here

II this morning as well! Does anyone know if you are able to stay with a student the night before the interview?

I cared most about a school's grading system and overall atmosphere when deciding where I attended med school. Hofstra uses an unranked P/F grading system which eliminates any competition between classmates. My classmates and I study together with the end goal of all passing the test as a group. It makes for an amazing learning environment - one where my classmates are my close friends. I couldn't imagine a group of more likeminded individuals. We go out with each other, host class outings, and exercise together. So far I've loved my classmates, the professors (who love teaching more than any profs I had at my large public undergrad), and the curriculum, which places an emphasis on understanding concepts over memorizing inordinate amounts of material. I liked becoming an EMT and doing rounds on the ambulance because I gained patient care experience in the prehospital setting, but the way the EMT curriculum is organized, it just ends up spending too much time teaching irrelevant information and takes away from the enjoyment of the first weeks of first year. Thankfully, EMT curriculum ends in the first course, and I've been told by second years that from here on out the curriculum is much more chill. Key takeaways: come here if you want a tight-knit class and no competition, don't come here if you can't see yourself learning well in small groups.

Hi folks I recently noticed my status on the secondary portal says 'complete and in the review process.'

I believe the 'in the review process' part is new, i.e. did not happen right after I submitted and was complete....can anyone confirm/deny this? Thanks!

I don't have that message under my portal, but I have been complete for some time. A similar thing happened with my Jefferson portal today.

I was complete on 8/6 and got the "complete and in review" status right after I submitted. Haven't heard a peep since....

+1 I was complete early July and have had the "in the review process" status for quite some time (not sure when exactly it showed up). Sort of waiting for the ax to drop since i've been complete for so long 🙁

General consensus on sending thank you letters, since Hofstra now runs MMIs? At the end of our interview day they said thank you letters are not necessary but I’m still unsure how to handle it lol

Also, does anyone know how receptive hofstra is to letters of intent? My interview day was amazing and the more I think about this school, the more I love it ahHhHh

did any of you get any more information

Interviewing here early November, so this is great to hear! I know you can't talk much about the actual interview for confidentiality, but what were your overall impressions of the school, what did you like so much about it, etc.? Thanks and I hope it works out for you! 🙂

For MMIs, are you expected to talk for 6 minutes straight or is it more of a conversation?

I was complete 8/9! So hoping to hear some news soon. Do they send out a rejection if they choose not to II?

Hi everyone, is it a terrible idea to take take a bus/train to Manhattan (Penn Station) and then take the train to Long Island for an interview?

Depends on how far you have to travel to get to Manhattan. Penn to Long Island via train is not too bad (30-40 mins), but you will need to Uber from the LIRR stop. Not sure which stop is closest to Hofstra - Mineola maybe?

II today too! Complete mid-August. For those who have already interviewed, what are the MMIs like here? More conversational, or like a series of 7 minute monologues?

Thanks so much! I really liked the emphasis on group/team-based learning. You’ll see on your interview day that their whole curriculum is essentially PBL (all mandatory seminars, nothing is recorded) which is scary to some but I think it helps make the environment more collaborative. I’m all for it! I actually prefer PBL over recorded lectures... Plus I have strong ties to nyc and I love the area 🙂 hope this helps!

i'm planning on taking the LIRR from penn to hempstead that arrives 7:30 am. is it cutting it too close for the 8 am interview? (sorry if this sounds neurotic)

I believe they said it's a 15min Uber/taxi from the closest LIRR station to campus, so that's a 15min buffer. is there an earlier train?

Important question to anyone who already interviewed: what was the breakfast like?

Bagels, mini muffins, coffee, granola bars. Thankful that they had some kind of breakfast, but it's not gonna win any awards.
