Does anyone know if it's common/acceptable/allowed to bring parents to second look?
I'm bringing one parent but they won't be with me during the day on Friday, mostly we'll just look into housing options together that weekend and ask more questions about financial aid.

Does anyone have any information about how long each day of Second Look lasts? The email they sent gives no other information about the event besides the dates?

For anyone else still waiting on an II, I just spoke with the admissions department and they said that the last round of IIs will go out "within the next week." So, I'm making my calendar deadline March 15th.

My app still says it’s being reviewed so I’m thinking it’s over lol

I'm getting in for my interview (3/11) 2 days early this weekend. If anyone wants to grab a bite to eat or a drink lmk!

So I see that second look is actually throughout the weekend of April 12? Does anyone know what we will actually be doing the other days?

I got the 2nd look email as well, it’s from Thursday the 11th to the 13th of April. Does anyone know if we have to attend every day?

Don't know if you're required to attend all three days (I suspect not, the wording sounds flexible), Friday seems like the most important day. Here's the schedule they email you once you RSVP:

Event Times:

4/11-Thursday 5:00 PM – 7:00 PM Opening Reception

4/12-Friday 8:00 AM – 6:00 PM Second Look Day

4/13-Saturday 10:00 AM -11:00 AM Apartment walking tour

Has anyone figured out to join the Facebook group? The link I was sent isn’t working...

your FB email might be different than the email address they sent the link to. So go to FB, change the sign in email address to the one they sent the invite too. Join the group and change email back to original. Hopefully that wasn't confusing.

Hhhm I use my phone number for Facebook...and I’m pretty sure it’s the same email if that’s connected

Does anyone know the attire for second look day? Will it be similar to the interview day or a little more casual? Thanks

In the past, has there ever been an increase in scholarship as it gets closer to april 30th and people withdraw their acceptances??

At my interview the dean implied that money from full rides will be redistributed after the applicant turns down the acceptance. I’m assuming after the deadline they’ll extend more scholarship money.

Was anybody else told that we'd hear back today for mid Feb interviews? It wasn't on their official list of acceptance days but that's what the dean said in the wrap up.

My status on the portal says I still need to be reviewed for a final time so I don't have my hopes up for today.

At my interview day in early February the dean said they weren’t doing a mid-March committee meeting bc they would be focused on Match Day. (I also still need to be reviewed for a final time)

Accepted yesterday for MD and MD/MPH!!! Interviewed 9/24 and 9/25

Congratulations! I was wondering if when you interviewed was the first day an MD interview and the second day an MD/MPH interview? Is it two interviews or 1 combined interview on one of the two days?

Depends. If you're going for MD/MPH, then it's two days but you still only do one interview during one of the days (they let you know which day in email). If MD, you do the first day and then you can leave.

I was recently accepted and haven't gotten any information about financial aid. Isn't there an internal application?

Who here is going to 2nd Look?

Do you think it’s worth attending even if I’m 100% set on attending this school anyway?
If your 100% all in and it doesn't cost a lot of $ to go then sure, but it does cost a lot then I don't think it would be worth it.
2nd look could get you excited and meet your upcoming classmates or spark some ideas of avenues you may want to pursue once school starts.

Just emailed about being added onto the MSTP alternate list

Can any current students speak to lecture attendance and how often you/other students have mandatory things to attend? What is a typical schedule like for M1 and M2?

Depends on what program you're in.

MD/MPH have mandatory PBL (8AM, 3x/week - 1st year; 10AM 3x week 2nd year). Doctoring lectures are mandatory (typically one lecture every other week or so) and so are public health lectures (every Thursday). General lectures are not mandatory - I'd say 40% of our class regularly attended.

Typical day mdmph 1st year:
-PBL for two hours then lecture until noon - afternoon is free on most days
-the days that you don't have pbl, they'll schedule four hours of lecture

mdmph 2nd year:
-lectures for two hours then PBL for two hours - afternoon is free on most days
-the days that you don't have pbl, they'll schedule four hours of lecture

Again, general lectures are not mandatory. It sounds like a lot on paper but it's definitely manageable.

MD students typically don't have many mandatories. Sparse weeks of PBL. I don't think they're doctoring lectures are mandatory either but I could be wrong. They tend to have much more free time than we do.

From the MD side - we have mandatories maybe 1-2/week for a couple hours. Usually small group discussions where we cement what was discussed in lecture.

I went to non-lecture for exactly 1 day before saying screw it and just studying at home. That said my fiancé went to almost every lecture in person and loved it.

That’s the beauty of Miami. You learn better in class? Go to class. Wanna study at home? That’s good too. Want more small groups? Do the MPH program.

We’re a school that prides itself on letting students do what works best for them. You can really make Miami into whatever you want from a med school.

I love research, so I dedicated all my extra non-class time to that. My best friend is big into service, so she spent days doing clinical work with underserved patients and watched lecture in the evening.

As always anyone who’s got specific questions about UM should post here and tag me or send a PM. I love answering questions about Miami.

It’s an amazing school and one I’m always happy to talk people ear off about

Since you are an M3, do students get to choose the rotation sites (VA, UMiami, Jackson) they want to do rotations with? Also, how much free time does the school give you next year to do residency interviews?

Rotations sites: you get to put preferences but nothing is guaranteed and all students will spend some amount of time at all 3 sites for M3. For electives you generally get to choose your site. Of note there’s a lot more then just Jackson, UM, and VA. We also have Sylvester Cancer center, Lennar (fanciest private hospital in the history of ever, they have a robotic piano for ambiance music), clinics from west palm down to the keys, Holtz Children’s Hospital, Mt Sinia Hospital on Miami Beach, Bascom Palmer eye hospital, and even a few sites in Naples. That said they won’t make you go to anywhere not in easy commuting distance if you don’t want to.

As for interviews we get a ton of time. We get 16 weeks off total during year 3 and 4, to spend however we like. There are also electives that have really flexible clinical schedules that people can take during interview season to add even more time. We also have longitudinal research and leadership electives we can take to add an extra 4 weeks of free time during 4th year. And all that doesn’t include the 6 weeks we get off to study for step 1.

I haven’t take any vacations during M3, so during M4 I’m taking 4 weeks off to study for step 2 around June. Then I’m taking 6 weeks off for interviews, plus the 2 weeks of winter break (8 total). I’m bookending interview season with some flexible electives to add even more time (I’m couples matching - have to do more interviews than most). That still leaves me with 6 weeks of vacation time to go bum around on a beach somewhere far far away after match is over.

I have some class mates who only used 2 vacation weeks for interviews and 2 weeks for step 2 - leaving them with an astronomical 3 months of vacation to use during M4. Its pretty great

Does anyone remember when they said the new curriculum is being released?

We’re still working on it, but as of now it’ll either be rolled out for your class (2023) or the one after (2024) depending on how quickly we can get the specifics hammered out. New curriculum is gonna be pretty awesome according to the students I know who are on the design committee. Gonna have tons of extra time for students to pursue their interests

I wonder if things have changed. I think we have maybe 3-4 days on average with a mandatory every week now, which are typically an hour-1.5hours long. This upcoming week we have a mandatory every day.

Yea it varies by block. Anatomy we didn’t have a single mandatory. There were definitely some blocks where there were mandatories every day. I was more going for the average

That is true regarding anatomy. As someone that hated anatomy and hates mandatories, I would pick mandatories. Our anatomy is really tough!

I’m sorry, I don’t understand what is meant by “Anatomy we didn’t have a single mandatory”.

Also, I’m unsure by you mean by “As someone that hated anatomy and hates mandatories, I would pick mandatories.”

I’m just trying to get an idea for what life will be like.

Sorry!!

It is hard to say because the schedule changes week by week. There are blocks/modules (usually around 6-10 weeks long) where there are a lot of mandatories and some that hardly have any mandatories.

I'd say 98% of the time lectures are not mandatory. But you may have exams (obviously), labs, clinical trainings, small group sessions etc. that are. As I said, the frequency of these just depends. Next week is PBL week for us (I believe we do that twice a year from year 1 and year 2) and we have a mandatory everyday. But the following week we only have one mandatory for two hours. Overall, it is hard to get an average.

I do not like mandatory sessions - most of the time I feel like I would have gained more studying myself (except for clinical trainings perhaps).

And yes, the general consensus seems to be that anatomy at this school is tough.

Thank you! That is very helpful. It’s also very encouraging to hear your enthusiasm for the school.

So does this mean that the grading system will change based on when the curriculum changes or is the grading system changing for sure next year regardless? I also love your enthusiasm about the school.
