Anyone on here prepping for the Wyoming interviews?
i interviewed in alaska this week -- the interview was quite brief and very friendly! i only did two mock interviews with a friend to prepare, and that was plenty. a lot of the questions were specific to my application, so there wasn't anything i struggled to answer. good luck!

Thanks for the help. I heard it really isn't as bad as people make this one out to be. If you are who you say you are the interview will go well

I am. Any tips? I'm already accepted a few places but this is absolutely my number 1 choice. I've heard it can be a lot more challenging than other interviews.

I’m prepping as well. Just be yourself, being from Wyoming most of us know what our state is lacking. They will ask questions from your application so just be yourself.

nope! sorry -- i wasn't there, although it sounds like it was pretty fun. my family wanted me to go out with them to celebrate instead. hopefully there will be more opportunities to meet the entering class before august.

Just got my post II rejection via email. Good luck to everyone else

I'm so sorry. As a third time applicant, I know how painful it can be. I'm sure you're hurting (rejection always hurts at least a bit) so what I'm going to say next may not be the thing you need to hear right now. If possible, try to remember that beyond a certain point, it's luck (who interviewed you, who saw your application, how you phrased an answer to a question) and that this rejection doesn't reflect your worth as a person or your potential to become an amazing doctor. Your committee gets a tiny peak into your life and your personality and I'm sure you are capable, as well as passionate about medicine and patient care. I hope you get in somewhere else this cycle, but if it doesn't work out, remember that you're not alone and that the next cycle will be better.

I read this and then saw your name and just wanted to say you got this. Stay persistent and sorry you’ve been in this crazy cycle so many times

Thank you for the encouragement 🙂 The screen name originated in my second cycle when I was waitlisted at GWU. It certainly was a memorable (and unnecessarily drawn out) experience which ended in July 2017 when I was finally notified that the school was not going to accept anyone else off the waitlist.

Going through this process has made me a more resilient person and it's also made me more certain that this is the path I want to be on. On the flip side, it's a highly expensive process as we all know. This means I've lived at home longer than I would have otherwise and I'm lucky that my parents have been understanding and supportive.

I will also say, each cycle I've made changes to my written application, as well as tried to diversify my experiences, added new letters of rec, and retaken the MCAT for a much higher score, so I'm at my wits end trying to figure out how else to improve my application if it comes down to a fourth cycle- I'm SUC at UW so I'm keeping my fingers crossed it doesn't come to this since I'd have to retake the MCAT in order to have a valid set of scores for the next round. Regardless, I'm prepared to soldier on if that's what it takes!

Best of luck with your remaining interview. I hope it goes smoothly and that you walk out knowing you killed it!

I meant for me sorry for the confusion. Also Wyoming’s last is Thursday

That is rough. Have you received feedback from any of the schools you have applied to?

Is this your third round with UW? They only allow 3 attempts.

The resilience you are showing is awesome and I’m glad you have been able to keep at it. I feel like I did kill the interview so now it’s up to the addcoms

This is my third (and last) chance to get into UW. I had a feedback meeting with someone from UW SoM last cycle (after I submitted my second application) and they told me that the reason I hadn’t been offered an interview that round was that my personal statement wasn’t strong enough. I overhauled the statement this round and I think that’s why I finally was offered an interview.

I’ve also worked very closely with my undergraduate institution’s premed advisor and with the members of my school’s prehealth board to make sure the whole primary was cohesive and persuasive.

Maybe it was my secondaries that weren’t strong enough? My other hypothesis is that admissions committees are not super enthusiastic about my research experiences since in their eyes this might make me better suited for an MD/PhD or a PhD program.

It is great that you were able to get feedback and have others helping you create a better application.

UW's secondary essays are great at narrowing the pool. The topics really give applicants a chance to shine if they truly understand health inequities and social determinants of health and have served marginalized communities.

Considering how many accepted MD-only applicants have strong research backgrounds + the amount of medical students that engage in research during their time in the program + the plethora of research opportunities in the UW/SCCA/Fred Hutch/Children's community available to students, I would hazard a guess that your research experiences aren't the problem. This may be something to ask about specifically if you don't get in this year though.

Good luck! 🙂

Thank you! And that's a good idea- If I'm not accepted, I'm going to make sure I schedule a feedback meeting with UW again to see what they'd suggest (even though I won't be able to submit another application to them).

Ps. Did you interview on January 10th? If so, we both interviewed on the same day. I was the girl who had one of the two morning interviews

I did! I'lll PM you. 😀

Sorry if this has already been asked, but how long after interviews does the Seattle cohort usually hear something?

Question for MT cohort, or Wyoming/Alaska people because I believe they have something similar: With the new "contract" they're having MT people sign stating that you'll return to MT to practice within a year of finishing your training, does that specifically mean end of residency or end of training, meaning you could pursue a fellowship and then return to MT? I haven't been able to find the specific language, and I can't remember what they said at my interview. Likely won't prevent me from enrolling, but just something to consider.

Also, for Seattle people waiting to hear back -- I work for a UW Medicine hospital in Seattle and they sent out an email this morning saying that all administrative meetings have been cancelled due to the storm and UW is closed after 12:30, so the admissions committee might not be meeting until next week. Hang in there, I know the waiting is awful!

I was pretty sure it's for after residency, but I don't have any evidence to back that up. That's what I remember hearing though.

I wonder if that will also delay the Wyoming Excom meeting since they meet with the entire wwami region too

Damn. They’re doing this for Montana now too? That’s some bull****.

The wording on the contract is “upon completion of your professional medical training.” I was under the impression during my interview that this included a fellowship but I can’t be positive. I am going to email admissions and check!

how does that contract work if you are doing the HPSP scholarship since you are required to remain on active duty for a certain amount of time?

For Alaska, the contract is because the State of Alaska pays part of our tuition (the difference between in-state and out-of-state tuition). This means that each Alaska student owes/pays in-state tuition to U.W. And from what I understand, this does not limit fellowships, if the fellowship is done right after residency. For Alaska, it is also okay if other service commitments are met first (like a military, IHS, NHS..etc.). At least that's the way it was when I looked into all of those options.

Now if someone does not practice in state, they end up owing the State the money that was paid on their behalf. So it's a time or money payback.

Congratulations to all of you that have been accepted! Good luck to those of you still waiting to hear. UWSOM is a great school! I strongly feel that there is an even field between WWAMI sites. Also, the Seattle lectures are recorded and made available to all sites. So if you feel like you did not have the best lecture on a specific hour/topic, you can always watch a different lecturer give the same lecture. The curriculum between sites is identical and everyone takes the same exact tests. I am very happy with my choice (U.W.).
